12 best kefir starter
Kefir starter is a key ingredient used to make kefir, a fermented dairy beverage known for its probiotic properties and potential health benefits. Kefir is made by fermenting milk or dairy alternatives with kefir starter cultures, which consist of various strains of bacteria and yeast. These microorganisms help transform the milk's sugars into lactic acid, giving kefir its tangy flavor and unique texture.
In the context of baby care and colic gas relief, kefir starter may be relevant due to the potential probiotic benefits of kefir for both babies and adults.Probiotics are live microorganisms that can provide a range of health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. Some potential benefits of probiotics, which may be applicable to baby care, include:
Improved Digestion: Probiotics can help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which is essential for proper digestion and nutrient absorption. This can be especially important for babies with colic or digestive issues.
Reduced Colic Symptoms: While more research is needed, some studies suggest that probiotics, such as those found in kefir, may help reduce symptoms of colic in infants by promoting a healthier gut microbiome.
Enhanced Immunity: Probiotics may contribute to a stronger immune system, which can be beneficial for infants, as their immune systems are still developing.
Potential Allergy Prevention: There is some evidence to suggest that early exposure to probiotics may reduce the risk of allergies in children.
When considering kefir for baby care, it's essential to consult with a pediatrician or healthcare professional to ensure it's suitable for your baby's specific needs and age. Additionally, it's crucial to choose a kefir product made with baby-safe ingredients and low in added sugars.
Please note that while kefir and probiotics can offer potential benefits, individual responses may vary, and more research is needed to fully understand their impact on infant health. Always seek professional medical advice for specific health concerns related to babies and colic gas relief.

User questions & answers
Question: | I ordered kefir starter powder. i received a movie called 3 dimension house of wax. i have no idea who to complain to |
Answer: | Funny. Just watch it. |
Question: | How many times can you reuse these grains |
Answer: | That's a great question! This culture doesn't actually contain grains; it's a powdered starter. Each packet may be re-cultured 2-7 times, using a small amount from the current batch to make a new batch. The milk kefir grains (a different product) can be reused indefinitely. |
Question: | Why is this so much cheaper ($6.99 as opposed to $18.99) but supposedly from the same producer and store, cultures for health, inc |
Answer: | The Kefir Starter Culture can be used in place of Milk Kefir Grains or Water Kefir Grains, which makes it a very flexible option. However, unlike the Milk Kefir Grains and Water Kefir Grains, this starter is only limited use while the others can be used indefinitely with good care. This article breaks down the difference between the three kefir options we offer: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/learn/milk-kefir/choosing-kefir-grains-versus-powdered-culture/ |
Question: | It’s been almost 48 hours. Mines hasn’t fermented yet. Can anyone tell why. I used 4 cups with one pack |
Answer: | Hi! The first time I used a culture starter, it did not work as expected either. I used coconut milk, let it sit in a dark place with a temp of 72 F, for 18 hours. It did not seem to work. I put it in the frig and I called Cultures for Health. They told me to take 1/4 cup of this milk and start a new batch with new milk. I did so and then waited for 24 hours. It did smell a bit yeasty and tasted sour and thickened some. So it worked. I did 4 batches , keeping 1/4 cup of cultured milk and starting a new batch each time (no new starter needed). It's best if your milk is not too cold to start with, the room temp is 72 F and above, a dark place, and leave it for 18-24 hours. After the first batch it took maybe 12 hours to work. Maybe the starter needs time and coaxing??? You could chat on culturesforhealth.com site. They will lhelp you with this. Good Luck. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you get the grains to arrive in Florida without being 'baked' on the way |
Answer: | Kefir grains are not as fragile as most people think. We ship them all year round. The do not begin to be compromised until 130 degrees and our packaging protects them. |
Question: | How much kefir will I Tbsp of grains make |
Answer: | I followed the instructions and used 1 cup of milk for 1 tbsp of grain which worked perfectly from the get-go. I had creamy kefir in 24 hours. The grains grew every day, approximately doubling in size every 2-3 days and I would increase the milk by half a cup every day until I reached a quart of milk. At some point the kefir became less creamy and more soupy. I would then play with the amount of grains by removing a portion of it and blending it into the kefir, but I always used 1 quart of milk to approximately 2-3 tbsp of grains, sometimes more, sometimes less, I wasn't too exact about it. Now that the weather has warmed up, my kitchen is eighty degrees because it faces south. In this environment I only need half a teaspoon for a quart of milk that becomes beautifully creamy/custard-like in 12 hours! |
Question: | Are these real grains or a "starter"? I'm told the starter only contains 7-9 strains of beneficial yeast vs. the 56 strains in regular grains |
Answer: | These are real grains. I received mine during summer via USPS and they were warm so I kept them in the refrigerator for 5 days and then started the activation procedure as directed (using store pasteurized whole milk for 1st four batches) and now make a quart every-other day now. I get raw milk to use and let stand in glass Ball quart jars with cheesecloth or linen caps held on with rubber bands. Mine set for @ 24 hours when kitchen cabinet is above 75 degree F, and up to 36 hours from 65 -75 degrees. When the whey separates out (semi-milky liquid) to the bottom; which, can be stirred back into the kifer, at this point I cut back the time by 2-4 hours. To get a thicker cream I let set for 12 - 24 hours in cabinet (out-of-sunlight) to pour over frozen fruit with a drizzle of honey/maple syrup, it's better than ice cream! Use cream kefir for smoothies (milkshake style), scrambled eggs, oatmeal (hot) cereal etc.. Regular kefir I refrigerate after separating out grains for drinking (w/honey or maple syrup), cold cereals, regular smoothies, cooking & baking (for baking increase by 25% for milk amount with organic whole wheat) but watch during cooking time and adjust baking times accordingly. My last A1c test for diabetes was normal for the first time in 10 yrs with medication reduction and my obese son has lost 60 lbs in less than 1 yr with diet change w/exercise routine. I also make kefir cream cheese dips(s), cheddar cheese and trying other foods with kefir. Recipes included via email are what I primarily use as my guide. |
Question: | What supplies will I need to make kefir |
Answer: | If you can find a local source for Organic Raw Milk. Raw Milk still has all of the goodness still in it, especially the enzymes because it makes the best kefir. You just must know your supplier, how they feed and care for their cows and that their facility is clean and sanitary, I can not emphasize this enough!! I have been drinking Raw Milk from an Organic Amish Farm for many years and have never had a problem. The biggest problem with Raw Milk, is that once you taste it you will never be able to drink the white liquid sold in stores that is called milk.As far as Organic Milk from the supermarket, I do it recommend it because it does not make the best kefir. One of the biggest reasons is that virtually all Organic Milk sold in stores IS Ultra-Pasteurized, it is very seldom labeled as such but it is. Milk, once processed (pasteurized) has an approximate shelf life of 10 days. If any milk, (including Organic Milk) half & half, heavy cream has a shelf life longer than 10 days it has been Ultra-Pasteurized. To Ultra-Pasteurize Milk it milk be heated to about 275 degrees. NOTHING good that was in the milk is able to survive this temperature!!!If you do not have a safe reliable source for Raw Milk then use regular whole milk from the supermarket.I use a 2 quart Mason Jar which I cover with a coffee filter and a rubber band. You will want to start with a 16oz Mason Jar, and as your Kefir Grains multiply move to larger containers until you have all the kefir that you need. Then donate your excess Kefir Grains to a friend!!I also agree with the person that recommended going online and reading. There is a lot of good information out there and follow the directions that come with the grains. I used Raw Milk from day one with the grains and never had a problem, even though Raw Milk is not recommended for your first batch or two of kefir. |

User questions & answers
Question: | After straining there was a clump of darker slimy tissue looking thing with some kefirs attached. Is this normal |
Answer: | Kefir can have all types of different appearances and your personal kefir will even change its appearance from time to time (usually with the seasons/temperatures or because you haven't fed it enough but even with different types of sugar or brands of water). I would suspect that it either got too hot or cold while being mailed and that is compounded by already being in a state of stress from not having been fed. The only way to know for sure if yours is good is to try to use it. Feed it 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1 quart of nonchlorinated & nonfiltered water to 1/4 cup kefir grains. You should probably dump the first batch or two anyway as the kefir are stressed (they weren't in "your" liquid either so there's no way of knowing how exactly they were kept). You can always rinse the grains with water (again non chlorinated and non filtered) after dumping the first couple of times if you're afraid anything is off (you shouldn't have to continue doing this - rinsing is unnecessary and you end out loosing baby kefir in the process). Feed it every 24 hours for the first couple of days whether they have eaten as much sugar as you'd like or not (helps make them less stressed). After a couple of times it should be safe to drink. It'll smell slightly funky and tart (kind of citrus like). If it smells like acetone you have something wrong (grains that are still stressed or are sick) and I would contact the seller. If it smells/tastes like sugar water your kefir are probably not viable (you should also be able to see little bubbles in your fermentation container an hour or two after feeding them). Otherwise you're good to go. They really do change appearances from time to time so it may be nothing more than temperature and stress. Mine were a little slimy looking the first week or so. Then they changed to looking almost like little chunks of yeast. Months later they're now like big clear rocks. All the same kefir kept the same way and fed the same thing. |
Question: | What is water kefir made from |
Answer: | It's not really a grain, it's just called that due to its shape. To me the pieces look like jelly crystals. Each piece is a symbiotic blend of good bacteria etc. It-they feed on sugar water. |
Question: | Are these produced in a gluten free facility? Dairy free |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for your inquiry. Grains are produced in a gluten-free facility. But not dairy-free as we also grow milk kefir as well. Thank you. |
Question: | Will I need anything other that these grains to make Kefir water |
Answer: | You will need sugar and purified water. I have used reverse osmosis with no ill effects. Oh, and I use a metal strainer all the time. Kefir grains have no problem with a stainless steel strainer. Just make sure it's not aluminum. Although, I don't know if that will have any effect either. i do add about 1/4 tsp of molasses when I'm brewing along with a 1/2 tsp of baking soda as well as some coral calcium. This makes the kefir very happy. However, if all you have is a stainless steel strainer, use it. I've been using mine for years and I have to give away kefir grains every few weeks. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you make a small batch? can you just use enough to make a cup at a time with an opened pouch |
Answer: | Have not tried, but don't see why not. There might be a limit on how long a package can be opened to work effectively. I would vacuum seal or put in plastic Ziploc bag. |
Question: | How many cups of milk should I put this in? Directions say a quart. Google says a quart is 4 cups but my quart size mason jars only hold 3 1/4 cups |
Answer: | We recommend a quart, or 4 cups, but the starter will work just fine with between 3 to 5 cups. |
Question: | how long does the kefir last once made in the frig |
Answer: | I would use it with in a week. Save some to make the next batch, also by the end of a week. |
Question: | Is this only bacteria or bacteria yeast blend |
Answer: | Our Easy Kefir is made from actual milk kefir grains, so it contains the full range of bacteria and yeasts that are found in the original kefir grains. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone use raw goat milk with this starter kit |
Answer: | I have been using the Body Ecology Kifer starter for raw goat milk for the past 10 years. I'm in a herd share and get 1/2 gal a week. I use about 1/2 c from my previous batch into a guart of raw uncultured milk and let it sit out for 24 hours at about 76 degrees. I only use a fresh pack of starter about every two months. It's always been consistent and easy. Make sure your jars and lids are meticulously clean. Good luck! |
Question: | why is it twice the price from the web sight |
Answer: | Do not buy the Starter. Buy the life Grains instead. |
Question: | Can I use this kefir starter to make yogurt |
Answer: | I've used this product to make a greek style vegan yoghurt. I add the grains to 32 oz of room temperature coconut water and let it sit until foggy, about 8-12 hours in a warm, dark place. I then mix the coconut kefir with young coconut meat and let that sit in a warm dark place for another 8 hours or so. When done, you have yoghurt. The coconut taste is very faint. I don't taste it. I then use this yoghurt to make lassi, tazikki and other yoghurt dishes. |
Question: | Can you make subsequent batches of kefir if the original cultured batch is not made from dairy |
Answer: | Yes, you can. I actually have never used dairy for my kefir, I always use coconut water (even a commercial brand like Zico). I use 1/2 of cup of my old produced kefir, to culture the next batch, and this could go for easily more than 15 cycles and still be active. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I plant to use Zico brand coconut water. Do I have to add extra sugar (other than the natural sugar in the coconut water |
Answer: | I have read that you don't need to add extra sugar. But you should put the grains back with regular sugar every other batch until you adapt them into coconut water only without sugar. You should always have a back up supply in regular (organic) sugar water. I don't like coconut water so I have not tried to tell you my personal experience. But I've read it's a very common favorite to many people and they really enjoy it. |
Question: | Can you use these with coconut milk |
Answer: | You can culture coconut milk with finished water kefir, not the water kefir grains. There are other options for culturing coconut milk such as using milk kefir grains or kefir starter- depending on what your needs are. If you have more questions please feel free to contact us. This article contains additional information about the process: http://www.culturesforhealth.com/coconut-milk-kefir-recipe/ |
Question: | Can you use this in milk after you multiply enough |
Answer: | Unfortunately, while milk kefir grains can be converted into water kefir grains, but the same is not true in reverse. Water kefir grains do not have the necessary bacteria to break down the lactose in milk. Water kefir grains need to remain water kefir grains, I'm afraid. |
Question: | do you have to use hot water every time you make the water kefir or can you use room temperature water |
Answer: | We recommend using some hot water every time you make your water kefir to dissolve your sugar. One of our favorite tips is to only heat as much water as you need to dissolve the sugar and then mix that will cold/room temperature water. It really speeds up the process since you don't have to wait for it to cool off. Once your grains are established you could consider experimenting with using only room temperature water but there's no guarantee that your grains will be able to convert the sugar as effectively. |

Add one gallon of juice to a clean, dried glass container Place powder contents of each capsule from one starter pack into juice Stir powder into juice until mostly dissolved (a few lumps are okay!) Place a towel over the mouth of container, you may secure with a rubber band, DO NOT place anything on jar that will create an airtight seal Place container out of direct sunlight at room temperature, ideally around 78 degrees. For best results use a heating element such as a yogurt maker or electric heating pad. Without direct heating the product may have inconsistent results. Allow product to sit undisturbed (do not stir) for 12-72 hours, depending on temperature. If consistently at 78 degrees it will take approximately 24 hours. If it is on a yogurt maker or heating pad it will take approximately 12 hours. If it is cooler than 78, or the temperature has fluctuated then it will take between 24-72 hours. Discard after 72 hours Product is done when it becomes carbonated to taste or with visible bubbles in container, depending on preference. Time can vary significantly, please taste test with a clean utensil regularly until carbonated. Once product is carbonated to taste, seal with loose fitting lid and immediately place in refrigerator and keep cold. too tight of lid can create too much pressure from carbonation too loose of lid will cause product to become flat more quickly mason type jars work great

User questions & answers
Question: | Seller: what are the actual ingredients and why aren't they listed on package |
Answer: | The only ingredients are a proprietary blend of 7 lab documented probiotics. They are not listed on the package because the probiotics in the finished product will vary significantly depending on the type of juice used, time & temperature of fermentation, and even the unique bacteria and yeast present in the environment of your own home. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Am I able to pour the grains, into soap without fermentation process |
Answer: | Yes, you can straight add the dehydrated probiotics to soap, or other desired creations (homemade cleaners, lotions, skincare etc), without the fermentation process. However, the results will vary widely depending on the other components of the mixtures and the viability of the probiotics will remain unknown without specific lab testing. Have fun! |
