Answer:	By "dead battery" the manufacturer means, a battery that is beyond repair. Any battery that has been drawn below 4 volts will not be sensed by the charger as a safety measure because it is beyond repair and could cause fires or electrical issues. This charger will recharge a battery that is temporarily out of energy (could read 10 volts to 12 volts on a voltmeter), but not one that is "dead" or damaged beyond repair (would read very low voltage, like 3 volts).

Answer:	Don't agree with D. Raupp: the number is not the amps it can put out but likely a number larger that 4.3 to show that it's a newer version in their line up. This charger is the next generation of the 4.3 with updated features/improvements, also with an added feature - the temperature sensing/adjustment. Called CTEK today and they said that 5.0 replaces the 4.3 which they are phasing out. This unit charges with several different amps: 0.8A; 4.3A; 2.5A; and 1.5A and switches automatically between them depending on which phase of the charge cycle it is in.

This one restored my Yellow Top battery back to its full capacity in short order! I own a Tahoe Hybrid and had installed the Yellow Top as a result of standard batteries not holding a full charge after a year or two, and often draining when not running the Tahoe at least once every 4-5 days or so.
