CARS

There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas

Formula One: The Champions: 70 years of legendary F1 drivers

Introduction

The Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship is the ultimate accolade in motor sport. Thirty-three men have been bestowed with the title since its introduction in 1950. These individual characters of widely differing classes and creeds may have been shaped by fourteen nationalities but every World Champion has been united by a singular determination to maximise a very special skill. The fact that such relentless resolve and thrilling talent had to be maintained across an entire season has helped elevate each driver into a pantheon of sporting achievement that sets them apart from the rest.

That is not to say that other drivers were less deserving; merely that this select group worked the demanding and diverse circumstances to best advantage. Their stories, gathered within the covers of this book, may vary greatly but the end result was always the same: recognition as the top driver in the world, regardless of how the accolade was achieved.

Debate has raged – and will doubtless continue to fulminate for another seventy years – over which driver is the best of the best. It is impossible to say. But that will not deter energetic and informed discussion, usually predicated on a personal preference swayed by affection.

Such feelings of fondness are inevitable in a sport providing a platform for breath-taking ability that is played out against a potentially hazardous backdrop.

Motor racing, through its wheel-to-wheel high-velocity environment, frequently gives virtuosity an extra edge. Each of these champions will have experienced and delivered that pulse-raising dynamic many times over. This collection of pen portraits will hopefully help you choose which one best meets your criteria and preferences.

Nelson Piquet

It’s not often – if ever – that Formula 1 mechanics care to run a fan club for their driver. But that’s what happened at Brabham when Nelson Piquet was not just the lead driver but also a mate with no airs or graces. It exemplified Nelson’s simple choices at the time; driving race cars and having fun.

That had been his ethos ever since arriving from Brazil in 1977, even though finding a drive was as difficult for Nelson Piquet Souto Maior (his full appellation before adopting his mother’s maiden name) as it would be for any 24-year-old, inspired by Emerson Fittipaldi but with nothing more than a few national championships to his name and very little knowledge of the English language.

Piquet’s ability spoke for him when he managed to win a couple of Formula 3 races in Europe with his own car; enough to earn a works drive that brought victory in the 1978 British F3 Championship – and the attention of F1 teams. Almost before he knew it, Nelson was making his debut with a private entrant in the German Grand Prix that year, followed by three more outings with another small team.

His ability to stay out of trouble in such high-profile surroundings was enough to warrant a third entry by Brabham for the final races of the 1978 season in North America.

Lewis Hamilton

As a youngster competing in karting, Lewis Hamilton was heavily influenced by Ayrton Senna. By the time Senna had won forty-one Grands Prix and three world titles in 1993, Hamilton was eight years old and beginning a motor-racing career that would actually surpass his hero.

As British Karting Champion that year, Hamilton got to meet Senna. Whereas other Formula 1 drivers had tended to ignore the youngster, Senna extended a firm hand, looked Lewis in the eye and spoke as one racer to another. It epitomised all that Hamilton had expected and, poignantly, exacerbated his deep sense of sorrow a few months later when Senna was killed during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

But the inspiration had been deeply ingrained, Lewis drawn by what he described as the Brazilian’s dramatically different style of very fast driving, coupled with a warrior-like refusal to be beaten. Senna’s performances had an unmistakable edge.

Hamilton would bring the same sense of excitement and anticipation to F1 from the moment of his first Grand Prix at the age of twenty-two.

His debut with McLaren was almost preordained, Lewis having boldly introduced himself to Ron Dennis in 1994 and informed the McLaren boss that he intended to drive for him one day.

Quietly impressed by such polite audacity and confidence, Dennis watched with increasing interest as Hamilton won championships in Formula Renault, Formula 3 and GP2; impressive progress that effectively guaranteed a place alongside Fernando Alonso for the 2007 F1 season.

User questions & answers

Question: does it work with koolatron thermoelectric coolers
Answer: Schumacher PC-6 = 6 amp. koolatron thermoelectric coolers 4 amp and more (small or big unit?). See on the unit spec amp?
Question: I have a cobra 19 ultra III CB radio, will this safely power it
Answer: According to its specifications, the current draw is 1.4 Amps maximum when transmitting ; so the Schumacher PC-6 should be able to safely power it !
Question: I need 12v dc power to bench test auto devices: radios, etc. these connect with 2 wires rather than a cigarette lighter. is there a way to use this
Answer: I agree with other answers but you could also use: https://www.amazon.com/KUNCAN-Replacement-Cigarette-Lighter-Extension/dp/B075DD6T32/ref=pd_sim_263_5?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B075DD6T32&pd_rd_r=5e46d4b3-effb-11e8-aea6-e10ad1dcec26&pd_rd_w=8g4DU&pd_rd_wg=fNllD&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=18bb0b78-4200-49b9-ac91-f141d61a1780&pf_rd_r=E659VPCF0WJQ297S0JMT&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=E659VPCF0WJQ297S0JMT This way you wouldn't have to cut anything and save the full function of the product (Schumacher PC-6) in case you want to use it for other purposes as it was designed. For the product I pasted above, you could also easily install proper connectors to do your bench testing. I would probably use two alligator clips with wires that have male connectors on the other end. Connect the male into the female connectors of the product I pasted above, plug into the Schumacher PC-6, and use the alligator clips to clip on to the negative and positive terminals of your auto devices you want to test.
Question: i want to convert or transform 110v to 12v will this thing work
Answer: Yes it transforms from 110 to 12.

User questions & answers

Question: The back came off of my fan that protects the back where the blade is where can I get one
Answer: CONTACT OUR CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 800-621-5485
Question: Does this only blow cold air or will it work to defrost windows
Answer: it works just like a fan, it does not make the air cold or hot, it just circulates it very quickly. I never tested it to see if it defrosted windows.
Question: How long is the power cord
Answer: I can give you a rough estimate. It is approximately 6 ft. I was surprised. I had purchased extension links expecting half that length. No need for them. I have the fan mounted in the back seat areas clipped to the clothes rack above the back window and the extra cord drapes down back to the floor.
Question: Does the car have to be turned on in order to run the fan
Answer: It depends on the vehicle. If your cigarette lighter gets hot with the ignition off, then yes the fan will also function while the ignition is off. However it's probably not the best idea because eventually the battery will be drained.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this charge a 12 volt DC, 4 Ah gel cell rechargeable battery
Answer: Any 12V input device will work. It powers up my high power ( 12V 6Amp) air pump just fine
Question: How many watts AC
Answer: 12 Volts x 10 Amps =120 Watts; 12 V x 15 Amps= 180 Watts (Ohm's Law), i.e., It will power devices requiring up to those wattages...such as my TireTek Compact-Pro Portable Tire Inflator Pump - 12V 140W Air Compressor 40LPM- which draws 140 Watts (an excellent pump-available here on Amazon). Now I can add air to my stored winter tires without having to run the car to power it from the cigarette lighter outlet.
Question: i have 12 volt mobile power station that needs recharging, can this recharge it
Answer: It really depends on how many amps the power station draws. If it exceeds the 15 amp rating, it may shut down prematurely. This unit takes 120 volt power and inverts it to 12 volt power. I used mine to run my mascerator unit on my RV and it did a great job. And that macerator was a 20 amp draw so I was careful not to run it for a great length of time. Hope this helps....but I think it will work.
Question: Will this power converter handle powering a Viair 85P air compressor
Answer: I'm pulling nearly 20 amps through mine, and it doesn't even slow down. This thing surprised the hell outa me - doesn't even feel warm, like it's not even working up a sweat or anything. Would be interested in knowing just how much more power the thing actually puts out. No lie - I'm very impressed.

User questions & answers

Question: will the eyelets fit the larger screws on rv gel batteries
Answer: The eyelets will not fit the terminal screw post on a regular size battery. However, they are easily changed and the effort is well worth it. I have three Interstate deep cycle batteries on my fishing pontoon and one of these units on each battery. Each battery has its own battery box. When it is charging time, just plug the charger into this pig tail and charge. No removing the batter box lid to get to the battery terminals. Great little piece of equipment. Highly recommend Big Spoodie
Question: What gauge wire are these
Answer: 18 AWG is the cable gauge. The length of the cable, including the connector and the lugs, is 18 inches. Its capacity is 5 amps, 12 volts.
Question: does this connector have a typical cap or cover over thr ends to protect from dirt/water etc
Answer: No covers but I have never had a problem with dirt or water since all of mine are mounted above the batteries they are on.
Question: how many amps is this rated for and how long is it rated for
Answer: It is rated at 5 amps continuous. It is designed to be used with a trickle charger which charges at no more than 3 amps - 12 volts. I am sure that it could handle more up to the capacity of the connector and or wires however I do not know what that would be. It is a very well made device. From your question it sounds like you plan another use for it so common sense comes into play. Good luck on your project. Harold

User questions & answers

Question: I try to order this item but show me can not ship to my address. I live in San Jose, CA
Answer: Due to California Energy Commission (CEC) regulations, this charger cannot be shipped into California, as it is not energy efficient enough and it does not comply with the new regulations.
Question: is it auto shut off
Answer: No, there is no auto shut off.
Question: Will this unit operate on 240 volts 50Hz
Answer: I believe the answer is "NO". From a brief review of the Owner's Manual, page 12, the only input voltage specification called out is 120V AC@60Hz, 4.8A. The manual does not mention the power routinely found in Europe or Asia, but does warn against using any type of power cord adapter other than what is provided. You would normally find a different type of receptacle outside the US. You may want to call Schumacher at 1-800-621-5485, and ask if they manufacture a 50Hz/240 VAC version for overseas sale.
Question: How does the desulphate mode compare with compettion (eg Xtreme Charge & Battery Minder) ? Gott save an 8D
Answer: I have a BatteryMinder 12248 as well as the 10030A. The Schumacher is junk in comparison. It basically uses a 15 volt charge to desulfate instead of high frequency voltage spikes. The higher voltage boils the battery and only runs when the charger thinks it's required, which is almost never. The BatteryMinder constantly desulfates, even in float mode. The 10030A is not temperature compensated during the charge phase, the 12248 is. I could go on, but you probably get the point. Get the 12248 BatteryMinder.
