13 best ev chargers
Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers, also known as Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), are devices designed to charge electric vehicles. These chargers are a crucial component of the infrastructure needed to support the growing adoption of electric cars. Here's what you should know about EV chargers:
Types of EV Chargers: There are several types of EV chargers, each with different charging speeds and applications:
- Level 1 Charger (120V): These chargers use a standard household outlet (120 volts) and are the slowest charging option. They are suitable for overnight charging at home.
- Level 2 Charger (240V): Level 2 chargers are faster than Level 1 and are commonly installed in homes and public charging stations. They provide higher charging power and are suitable for daily charging needs.
- DC Fast Charger (Level 3): DC fast chargers are the fastest charging option and are typically found at public charging stations. They can charge an EV significantly faster than Level 1 and 2 chargers and are useful for longer trips.
Charging Connectors: Different electric vehicles use different types of connectors, including J1772, CCS (Combined Charging System), CHAdeMO, and Tesla's proprietary connector. It's essential to choose a charger that matches your EV's connector type.
Home Charging: Many EV owners install Level 2 chargers at home in their garages or driveways. These chargers provide convenience and ensure that the vehicle is fully charged and ready to go each morning.
Public Charging: Public charging stations are available at various locations, including parking lots, shopping centers, and along highways. Some are free, while others require payment or a subscription.
Charging Speed: Charging speed depends on the charger's power output and your EV's capacity to accept a fast charge. Level 2 chargers typically provide 15-30 miles of range per hour, while DC fast chargers can provide 60-80 miles of range in just 20-30 minutes.
Networks and Apps: Several charging networks and mobile apps help EV owners find nearby charging stations, check availability, and initiate charging sessions.
Cost of Charging: The cost of charging an electric vehicle varies depending on factors such as your location, the charging station's pricing structure, and your electricity rates. Some public charging stations offer free charging, while others charge per kWh or per minute.
Installation and Safety: Installing a Level 2 charger at home may require an electrician to ensure safe and proper wiring. Safety features are built into EV chargers to protect against electrical faults and overheating.
Government Incentives: Some governments offer incentives and rebates to encourage the installation of home EV chargers and the purchase of electric vehicles.
Compatibility: When purchasing an EV charger, make sure it is compatible with your EV's voltage and amperage requirements. It's also advisable to choose a reputable brand for reliability and safety.
As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow, the availability of EV charging infrastructure is expanding. Choosing the right charger for your needs, whether for home or public use, is an essential step in making electric vehicle ownership convenient and practical.

User questions & answers
Question: | This charger is rated up to 50 amps. Is it auto sensing or it a manual switch? More to the point, what wire size is needed |
Answer: | The charger can deliver up to 50 continuous amps, which would require a circuit wired for at least 60 amps (60 amp circuit can deliver 80% of rating, so 48 amps). 60 amp circuits at 80% require 6 gauge wire. You set the maximum capacity of the charger when you configure it on the ChargePoint amp. EVs only draw the amount they are capable of charging at - so 9.6 Kw for most EVs except Teslas (240 V times 40 amps) New Teslas can draw above 50 amps, so that is what the max setting on the app does - it limits the safe output to the circuit capacity. There is no manual switch on the charger, it is all set through the app. |
Question: | Is it possible to extend the nema 14-50 plug cable length by swapping it like you would a dryer |
Answer: | This is why you need to research electrical codes or use an electrician. The 12” requirement in NEC 625.22 mandates the 12” applies to the “personal protection system” location to the plug not to the cord length from plug to vehicle that requirement is a minimum of of 6’ and max of 15’. Just google NEC 625 page 4 section 625.17 for more details |
Question: | Can it be set to charge to a certain percentage of charge? Like charge my battery to |
Answer: | No. I set the charge limit to 70% in my vehicle (I can also do 80% or other value). Then I set the charge time (10pm-6am) in the ChargePoint app. An alternative is to have a short charge time (say 10-12pm). The charger does not know how much the vehicle is charged. |
Question: | If the app experiences a problem or ChargePoint stops supporting it, what’s the default setting for amperage and is there a manual way to change it |
Answer: | Hi there, Before you set up ChargePoint Home using the ChargePoint mobile app, the default amperage is set at 16A. However, once you select your preferred amperage during the set up process in the app, the chosen amperage (up to 50A) becomes your default going forward. There is no manual way to change the amperage if you have a problem, but Home will still charge at the level you chose during setup. Thanks for asking, Team ChargePoint |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is different about the update version |
Answer: | The update version have new design and the J1772 connect is IP67 waterproof (higher level), the control box had more protection. |
Question: | Is the temp display for battery or charger temp |
Answer: | Hello there, thank you for asking. The temperature display on screen is the temperature of control box. |
Question: | a socket with switch button is suggested? WHY? I plan to keep the indoor part behind a 3rd garage door and not convenient to open and turn off |
Answer: | The typical NEMA 14-50 socket is not designed to be plugged and unplugged on a regular basis. Heavy Duty models exist, but this will often just result in wearing down the pins of the plug on the charging cable. Also note a 50A switch is different than a breaker. Do not use any breaker to regularly remove power except when its circuit is being maintained. Breakers are easily broken by such repeat use. For its part, the Mustart has delicate electronics to respond to the request of the car. Leaving it plugged in leaves it exposed to transient power surges in your local neighborhood, such as lightning strikes. The best solution is a whole-house surge suppressor such as https://amzn.to/31S7ls3. Then the Mustart can remain plugged in as well as protect other delicate items in your home such as televisions and computers. |
Question: | Will the 32amp charger shut off automatically when the car has a full charge. are you applying for ul -ulc certification for this product |
Answer: | Car chargers stop charging when the battery is full. No harm keeping them connected after the battery is full, except in wet weather, perhaps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Seriously, no user manual included. no user manual i can find online. how could i stop charging? the charger seems locked on the car. thanks |
Answer: | On my car i just unlock the car with the keyfob which releases the charger port lock you are referring to, but only temporary (ie: you need to unplug within 30 seconds or so, or the car will relock it) Another alternative is to simply unplug this from the wall. |
Question: | I have a 2012 chev volt. I need to buy a new portable charging unit that will plug into my garage which is a normal household plug |
Answer: | I would buy a 220 volt charger that would plug into a electric dryer socket. this would charge your volt 2 to 3 times faster. if you don't have this you can run a line to your garage from your electric box. |
Question: | Can the level 1-2 charger with nema 6-20 plug charge at 16 amp rate with 120v when adapted to either a nema 5-20r or a nema tt-30r |
Answer: | At 120V the charger charges at 1/2 the rate of 240 Volts The calculation of KVA or KW depends on both amps and volts. So if you use this charges at 240V, it is a 3.6 KW charger and at 120V it is a 1.8 KW. At either voltage the amp draw can be as high at 16 AMPS. |
Question: | Hi, can I charge in my 110v outlet? and what is the output voltage |
Answer: | This unit has an adapter that you can use for either 110V or 220V (the small cord). these cords do not change the voltage, they only monitor for faults and send what ever voltage the unit is plugged into, through to the car. |

Customer Survey Who Have Bought Megear EV Charger
This 16 amp 240v charger cable is perfect and preferable to higher amperage charging cables. Your lithium ion battery will last longer over it’s lifetime trickle charging at 120v overnight. This 16 amp “faster” charger is your next choice and will charge your battery in half the time without shortening the life of your battery. Higher amp charging can shorten the life of you battery by as much as 10% of the expected life of the battery. Never charge immediately after driving...let the battery cool off...then charge. Heat is the enemy of a lithium ion battery. This cable works perfect right out of the box with my Honda Clarity.
Customer Survey Who Have Bought MEGEAR EV Charger
This works fine with my BMW I3, and we now get a full charge in about 5-6 hours as opposed to the previous 18-20 the factory charger took. Well worth the money of admission. Also, this plug Neme 10-50 could plug into my dryer outlet so I don’t have to install new outlet for 240volts outlet in my house that it saves my money for installation for new outlet. Economic choice!
Customer Survey Who Have Bought MEGEAR EV Charger
Purchased as replacement for my Ford C-Max Energi after accidentally damaging original cord. Actually like this better than what came with the vehicle. The cable has a heavier gauge extension cord, so it does not kink like the original one did. I'm very pleased with the item and ended up saving almost 450 dollars over what Ford wanted for a replacement cord. It works, saved money, and I feel is nicer than original, so in every way I am pleased with this purchase!
Customer Survey Who Have Bought MEGEAR EV Charger
We bought the NEMA6-20 plug with level 1 adapter unit. The product was shipped well and arrived as scheduled. A couple of key things we like over the factory supplied charger: The wall hook to easily wrap the cord around and the "gun" holder you stick the charger into while it is not charging in the car. It's light weight and smaller than our original charger. It is nice to be able to easily adapt to the charging outlets available. We charged on 110 until we bought the 220 outlet and it was a simple switch for us. That option was available on the factory charger. We are happy so far!
1.Check Your Socket Circuit Breaker or GFCI Socket
- Our EV Charger working current is 16A. Please check your breaker whether more than 16A. (18A, 20A, 30A .... is also OK)
- The good choice is the 18A or 20A circuit breaker. Otherwise, it will trip your breaker if the breaker max Amp is lower than 16A.
2.Check Your Socket Type Whether NEMA 6-20/ NEMA 5-15 / NEMA 5-20 And Check the Wire Gauge Of Socket
- The NEMA 6-20 plug can fit with NEMA 6-20 socket. The unit used with NEMA 5-15 adapter can fit with NEMA 5-15 / 5-20 socket.
- The way to check socket type is according to words was lettered in outlet or you can compare the outlet with our cartoon.
- DON’T use this charger if your socket wired with 16/3C or 18/3C cable.
3.Warning! Fully plug into your socket when using
- When using electric products, you need to fully plug into the socket so that metal plug fork can completely connect the socket.
- If not, it may burn out socket due to the bad connection.

User questions & answers
Question: | Just purchased electric vehicle and i need to install 30a ev charger inside my garage. is this unit just plug into the garage electrical outlet |
Answer: | Like all Level 2 EVSE units, this requires a 240V circuit. This particular model plugs into a 6-50R receptacle, which is a fat 3-prong receptacle used in some dryers (or even some welders plug into this type of receptacle). It needs to be installed on a dedicated 40A circuit breaker. I was able to install the circuit breaker and wiring myself because I had easy access to my subpanel in the garage, but if you don't have easy access or aren't sure how to wire it up, definitely have a professional do it. There is also a direct hard wire version that skips the plug and is wired directly to the circuit. We've had our Siemens EVSE since November, use it almost every day/night, works great. Even though all EVs have some type of charge timer, I find the delay feature on this unit to be very convenient for charging the car overnight. |
Question: | Can an extension cord be used with this? I have a 240V dryer plug in my garage, but it's located near a cabinet, so there's no wall space near it |
Answer: | Yes. And this is coming from an electrician. You would need at a minimum 10 Gauge SO though given the chargers ability to draw near maximum current for extended times I would recommend 8 Gauge SO which can be difficult to find. You then would simply need a NEMA L14-30 Amp rated plug assuming your Dryer used the same socket. You should be aware though that consists of a pair of Hot conductors, a Neutral, and a Ground line while most Electric Dryers use a NEMA L14-50 which only has a Pair of Hot conductors and a Ground, NO NEUTRAL, which may make it useless for the charger as a Neutral is needed. |
Question: | How easy is it to set charge rates - for instance I might want to charge at 2.5 kW on most days and switch to 6.6 kW on certain days |
Answer: | For me, it is very quick and easy to change the rate of charge. I have the prior version of this charger, which has the same method of charge rate adjustment. I have removed the four front screws and use spring clamps you might use in a woodshop to hold the front cover closed. To adjust the charge rate I remove the spring clamps (3 seconds), swing the cover up (its hinged on top), grab my little screwdriver which I've left there behind the front cover, rotate the adjusting "switch" (5 seconds), set the screwdriver down, cover down, clamps on (5 seconds), done. This is a valuable feature for our situation...I've changed the setting on the charge rate hundreds of times to suit the current need. |
Question: | It is type II head, can use in bmw I |
Answer: | yes. If you have the US version of the i3 which has J1772 compatibility. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It looks cheap and it is cheap why get this one instead of a juice box pro |
Answer: | It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that come with a first rate level 2 EVSE or station. If you are a, "Plug it in when I get home, and unplug when I get ready to go, the "bells and whistles" That come with the more expensive units are just features you pay for but don't use. I use mine on a LEAF S, and my electric service costs the same day and night, no need for connectivity or scheduled charging. Well satisfied. $200 vs. $400 to $600, your choice. |
Question: | A silly question, but is it OK to leave the charger plugged in into the wall outlet when the car is not being charged |
Answer: | It is okay to leave the charger plugged in when not using it. The only thing it will do is draw very, very little power. It will not be a drastic difference on the bill, but electric companies recommend not leaving it plugged in. |
Question: | What safety certifications does it have |
Answer: | Hopefully the supplier will be able to give the answer b/c I as a buyer cannot say. I haven't had any safety issues, breakage, weak material, bad construction or anything so far even after being in the rain and snowed on . Very well made. |
Question: | What is kw output rate |
Answer: | Please note that a 20A rated breaker (the one in your panel) will allow 80% continuous current, so 16A maximum. Therefore max theoretical KW output would be 3,840 watts or 3.84KW. However, voltage at your receptacle is probably somewhere between 220-240V. So your max output may vary. Also note that the charger itself has a maximum rating. |

- The good choice is the 18A or 20A circuit breaker. Otherwise, it will trip your breaker if the breaker max Amp is lower than 16A.
2.Check Your Socket Type Whether NEMA 5-15/5-20 And Check the Wire Gauge Of Socket
- The NEMA 5-15 plug can fit with NEMA 5-15 and NEMA 5-20 socket.

Question: | what else do i need to charge my model |
Answer: | An electrician to have a 240v 30 amp connection. The truck charges in 3 hours more or less. |
Question: | Does this unit plug into a nema |
Answer: | No. It’s normally hardwired but you could probably buy the 14-50 cord and connect it to the charger. Great charger for the $. |
Question: | How do I get the 25% off as a Blink Pro member |
Answer: | Visit BlinkCharging.com/Pro and register for free. You'll receive an email with a unique discount code to use in your Amazon purchase :) |
Question: | The manufacturer's website says it requires a 40-amp fuse for protection. Has anyone had experience plugging into a 30-amp fuse |
Answer: | Ok from the NEC you are required to run 40 amps for this device. Then what should be done is place a 30 amp disconnect before the device. So from the panel you will run 8 gauge wire to support the 40 amps. Then that will terminate in the disconnect which would be fused at 30 amps. So if the devices pulls more than 30 it will blow the fuse since this device shouldn't be drawing MORE than 30 amps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work on Tesla model S |
Answer: | You will need a SAE J1772 Charging Adapter for it to work. |
Question: | Does it work on the 2020 Bolt |
Answer: | It should. I have a 2017 Volt and it works on that. I assume the plugs are the same on the Volt and Bolt. Check with your Chevy dealer to be certain. |
Question: | Does the fact that this is a 16 amp and the OEM charger is a 12 amp mean that my electric bill will go up, down, or stay the same |
Answer: | As chris says, it will deliver the same amount of electricity, so your bill won't go up. It could theoretically lower your bill if (1) you have "time of use" billing and (2) the cheap time window is too short to fully charge your EV with the 12 amp charger. |
Question: | What type of outlet do I have to install for level 2 charging |
Answer: | You will need a 6-20 outlet on a 220-250v line |

User questions & answers
Question: | plugged it into my 2017 chevy volt. It states that it has power & charging but my car isnt charging. Any ideas what going on |
Answer: | Not sure if this is what it is, but you have to plug it into the power source before plugging into your car. |
Question: | Charger will only work if I unplug the charger from the wall, then plug it back into the wall, all while the charger is plugged into car. Defective |
Answer: | You need to check on the screen of the charger to make sure it matches the voltage of your plug. In the USA, a standard plug is 15v, so you will need to make sure it is on 12v when you turn it on. It will work on lower voltage, but it will take longer to charge. It will not work on any higher voltages as it may trip your breaker! |
Question: | What size plug for a bolt with dc fast charging |
Answer: | Our charging plug meet with J1772 standard. If you cann't distinguish it, you can send your charging hole to our mailbox. Thank you. |
Question: | how long does it take to charge a Bolt EV at 16amps? thanks |
Answer: | I don't have the figures for a BOLT EV. But I have tracked my Ford Energi Plug-In and the 110V charger does indeed take 7.5 hours for a battery charge. The 240V takes 2.5 hours, one third the time. That's the best I can share. Logic tells me if you're going from 110 to 240 you'll have the same savings in time. The dealer should know this cold. My Ford dealer did. |

Customer Survey Who Used More Than One Year
This 16 amp 240v charger cable is perfect and preferable to higher amperage charging cables.
Customer Survey Who Have Bought ZENCAR EV Charger
This works fine with my BMW I3, and we now get a full charge in about 5-6 hours as opposed to the previous 18-20 the factory charger took. Well worth the money of admission. Also, this plug Neme 10-50 could plug into my dryer outlet so I don’t have to install new outlet for 240volts outlet in my house that it saves my money for installation for new outlet. Economic choice!

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the actual dimensions of the product |
Answer: | The description in the product says 25ft plus 3 ft in length. I calculated a little less than 9 metres in length. |
Question: | Would this work with a 2019 kia niro phev |
Answer: | It will work in any car that accepts the J-1799 plug. |
Question: | I Can’t find the manual online please send me link to the Manuel |
Answer: | The reason you can't find a manual is because it is Plug and play. You plug it into the receptacle, a power light comes on, each led light has a label, read them, when the car is attached a different led lights up read what it is labelled as, the flashing blue light means it is charging. Again, there is no manual. |
Question: | Is this compatible with 2011 Nissan leaf |
Answer: | The 2015 Chevy Volt I had (I replaced it with a 2020 Tesla Model 3) accepts a maximum of 6.6 kW charging rate (as I recall). The Chevy Volt can accept charging from the Chevy supplied charger which receives 120VAC at 8 or 12 Amps, meaning a power input of about 1.2 kW or 2.4kW, respectively. When I had the Chevy Volt, I went to a 240VAC, 16 Amp charging unit and the Chevy Volt accepted the higher power input of about 4.4 kW. Since, I have no experienc3e with this specific unit, I cannot positively answer the question but it would seem to be compatible. P.S., I love my Tesla Model 3. |
