11 best digital gemstone refractometers
Digital gemstone refractometers are specialized instruments used in the field of gemology and jewelry appraisal to determine the refractive index of gemstones. The refractive index is a critical optical property of gemstones that helps identify and classify them based on their optical characteristics. These refractometers are essential tools for gemologists and jewelers as they provide valuable information for gemstone identification and authentication. Here are some key features and aspects of digital gemstone refractometers:
Refractive Index Measurement: Digital gemstone refractometers measure the refractive index of gemstones, which is a fundamental property that describes how light is bent or refracted as it passes through the gemstone.
Digital Display: Unlike traditional refractometers, which use a scale or analog reading, digital gemstone refractometers have a digital display that provides a precise numerical value for the refractive index. This makes readings more accurate and easier to interpret.
User-Friendly Interface: These refractometers often come with user-friendly interfaces that allow gemologists to input data and obtain results quickly and efficiently.
Built-in Light Source: Many digital gemstone refractometers include a built-in light source, such as an LED, to illuminate the gemstone sample, making it easier to observe and measure the refractive index.
Sample Holder: They typically have a sample holder or stage where the gemstone is placed for measurement, ensuring that it is properly aligned and held securely during the testing process.
Portability: Digital gemstone refractometers are usually compact and portable, making them suitable for use in various settings, including gemstone markets, jewelry stores, and gemological laboratories.
Gemstone Identification: By measuring the refractive index, gemologists can compare the obtained values to reference data for various gemstone species. This aids in the identification and differentiation of gemstones, especially when combined with other gemological tests.
Accuracy and Precision: These refractometers are known for their accuracy and precision in determining the refractive index, which is crucial for distinguishing between gemstone varieties that may appear similar visually.
Gemstone Authentication: Digital refractometers play a vital role in verifying the authenticity of gemstones. They can help detect certain gemstone treatments or synthetics based on variations in refractive index.
Price Range: The cost of digital gemstone refractometers can vary depending on their features and quality. High-quality models with advanced capabilities may be more expensive than basic ones.
In summary, digital gemstone refractometers are indispensable tools for gemologists and jewelers to assess the optical properties of gemstones accurately. They are essential for gemstone identification, classification, and authentication, helping professionals make informed decisions in the jewelry and gemstone trade.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this refractometer good for testing different oils in water |
Answer: | Dear customer, Thank you very much for waiting. We tested the kombucha today. When we use the handheld refractometer (0-32 % brix ), we found that our vision was blurred because there were more mixtures in the kombucha. Then we tested it with a digital refractometer (0-50 % brix), and the result was the same as that of the handheld refractometer, which was about 4.1%brix. If you want to know the quality of kombucha, you can use the mixture index to see the result because the kombucha is a mixture liquid, such as specific gravity, density, %brix. You can use the %brix as an indicator of the quality of kombucha. However, with a handheld refractometer, it's not easy to see the results. Any questions, Please let us know. |
Question: | i purchase this product to use with honey, after i set in zero y load the honey on the chamber and it mark HHH is this ok? how should i use |
Answer: | It does not require a battery. |
Question: | What is the sample holder made out of? Glass? Plastic |
Answer: | Sorry for the last answer, the one I bought came with olive oil or honey instructions but in this one description you can see they recommend distilled water (same RODI parameters )to calibrate it, so you can do it. |
Question: | I need to measure the salt content directly in the fish tissues, the device does this |
Answer: | The measurement may be inaccurate because the salinity of the swimming pool is not good and our products are generally used to test seawater. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is the menu to set it up to read the salt level on a pool |
Answer: | There’s A 9-volt battery in it. It will last about 3 years easy. |
Question: | Does this read ppm of salt |
Answer: | Measures all minerals, etc dissolved in water. Not a specific element. |
Question: | Can I change temp reading to Fahrenheit |
Answer: | kENT, Taken directly from LaMotte's website:Designed for the pool professional. The tester's probe is dipped into a sample of pool water and the results are ready instantly. The Salt PockeTester measures the Sodium Chloride level in salt water pools with a range from 0 to 9,999 ppm. TDS is measured from 0 to 9,999 ppm and Temperature from 32.0° to 149°F. A memory feature saves up to 25 test results. The PockeTester is packages in a rugged carrying case with a special calibration standard. |
Question: | Can this item test EC value in soil |
Answer: | My meter was durable, but after 2-3 years water leaked into the battery compartment and caused corrosion. I've used other salt meters, but bought another LaMotte to replace the damaged one. |

Robinair's No. 75240 Coolant and Battery Refractometer is designed for use in measuring the freeze point of propylene or ethylene glycol based cooling systems and for checking the strength of electrolyte solution batteries. This precision instrument features high-quality optics with ultra smooth focusing. Scale range: -60 degrees Fahrenheit to +32 Fahrenheit. This handheld refractometer is a portable, precision optical instrument used for measuring the freeze point of engine coolant and the operating state of battery charging liquid. It is used on transportation vehicles, such as cars, tractors, tanks, ships, etc., which use propylene or ethylene glycol for coolant and sulphuric acid for charging liquid. When a liquid (such as coolant or charging liquid) is placed on the prism, the light passing through it is bent. The more concentrated the liquid, the more the light will bend. The refractometer contains a reticle, or scale, that is enlarged through the eyepiece to measure this bent light. The values of the scale have been established to evaluate the coolant or charging liquid. Complete kit includes refractometer with rugged aluminum housing, eyedropper, screwdriver, vial of distilled water, cleaning cloth, foam lined rigid plastic case, and complete usage instructions. Robinair, a Bosch Automotive Service Solutions brand, is a global leader in service tools and equipment based in Owatonna, Minnesota. Robinair is recognized throughout the world as the quality and performance leader in AC/R evacuation tools and this position has led to its success with the full range of products that serve the heating/ventilating/air conditioning/refrigeration (HVAC-R) and mobile markets, which includes the automotive aftermarket along with other industries such as agriculture and construction.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this come with a hard case |
Answer: | Yes, You will need to use the fab key. It is an exception to the rule. it is the only key you have. |
Question: | If I use this, should I ignore manufacturer's mileage-based coolant recommendations? Is there any other test that should be performed |
Answer: | No, it is not a 100% waterproof because of the folding sections. I get some water in the bed from steady rain. I keep things that shouldn't get wet in plastic boxes with lids on them. That being said, overall I am happy with the tonneau. |
Question: | Just to clarify ,HOAT,OAT and G-05 are also able to be tested |
Answer: | I would not waste my money. Mine is only 4 years old and is falling apart. I have cracks in the outer top layer that let water inside the cover. some of the hardware has broken in the middle that secures it to the rails. the rails themselves have warped over time and it dose not want to latch down. I started having problems with the cracks at less than a year and when I checked with Extang I found it had to be returned to the factory for service that made the warranty about useless. |
Question: | Does this unit measure the coolant PH level of a vehicle |
Answer: | yes, you will have full use of the tailgate without having to open the cover |
Question: | Will this work with the gem in a setting |
Answer: | I doubt there's any difference between the '14 (mine) short bed and the '15. Both are 5'8". Extang folks were very helpful to me, so if you're nervous, call them. I'm confident it will fit. I really like the cover...light weight and sturdy. I traded in my second Avalanche and really missed the hard cover. Good luck... but I think you'll be happy. |
