13 best brake bleeders
Brake bleeders are tools used in automotive maintenance to remove air bubbles from the brake system, a process known as brake bleeding. Air in the brake lines can compromise the efficiency and safety of the braking system, leading to reduced braking performance or brake failure. Brake bleeders help ensure that the brake fluid in the system is free of air, maintaining optimal brake function. Here are key points related to brake bleeders and their use:
Purpose of Brake Bleeding: Brake bleeding is necessary when air enters the brake system, often due to brake fluid leaks, component replacement, or routine maintenance.Air in the brake lines can lead to a spongy brake pedal and reduced braking efficiency.
Brake Fluid Reservoir: Brake bleeders are typically connected to the brake fluid reservoir. The tool creates a vacuum or pressure to extract or force out air and contaminated brake fluid from the brake lines and calipers.
Types of Brake Bleeders:
- Manual Brake Bleeders: These require manual operation by the user to create vacuum or pressure in the brake system.
- Pressure Brake Bleeders: These use pressurized air to force new brake fluid through the system, pushing out old fluid and air.
Vacuum Brake Bleeders: This type of brake bleeder creates a vacuum, drawing out air and old brake fluid from the system. The vacuum is often created using a hand pump or vacuum pump.
Pressure Brake Bleeders: In pressure brake bleeders, pressurized air is used to force fresh brake fluid through the system, effectively pushing out air and old fluid. These tools are often faster than vacuum bleeders.
One-Person Operation: Some brake bleeders are designed for one-person operation, allowing individuals to bleed their brakes without assistance. This is especially useful for DIY enthusiasts or those performing brake maintenance at home.
Bleeding Sequence: Brake systems are typically bled in a specific sequence to ensure all air is removed. This sequence varies depending on the vehicle make and model, and it's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
Safety Considerations: When working with brake systems, safety is paramount. Brake fluid is corrosive, and proper safety precautions, such as eye protection and gloves, should be taken. Additionally, the vehicle should be securely lifted, and the brake system should be properly bled to avoid accidents.
Regular Maintenance: Brake bleeding is part of regular brake system maintenance, ensuring that the brake fluid remains free of contaminants and air bubbles. It contributes to reliable braking performance and extends the life of brake system components.
Brake bleeders are valuable tools for maintaining the safety and performance of a vehicle's braking system. Regular brake system maintenance, including bleeding, is crucial for ensuring that the brakes operate effectively and safely.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the inner diameter of the tubing |
Answer: | As best as I can remember the clear tubing ID is 3/16" But the many attachments are different sizes. |
Question: | How much the reservoir jar can hold? Thanks |
Answer: | The top mark reads 4 1/2 oz. Or 130 ml. With about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch left to completely full. |
Question: | None of the three piece adapters which came with the kit fit my car. Even the smallest is too big |
Answer: | Try taking some tie wraps on the tubing that goes around the zerk fittings or try ace hardware and see if they can match the size you need. Auto parts store don’t really have a good selection of tubing |
Question: | Is the product and it's seals oil resistant? I need to bleed out hydraulic lines. They are the same size as brake lines |
Answer: | This is a complete piece of crap. It literally fell to bits the first time I used it. Don’t buy it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought this tool and i need to know what adapter do i need for a 2016 ford explorer |
Answer: | If you are simply using the stock brake bleeder valve then you will not need any additional tools. |
Question: | Does this require a separate pressure source? or pumping the container provide both the reqd pressure and the reservoir of back fill fluid |
Answer: | No separate pressure source is needed. It pressurizes and refills the master cylinder as you bleed the brakes. |
Question: | Is it okay use it if the compressor provides more than 113 psi |
Answer: | I added a pressure gauge and a valve so I can regulate the pressure.I use it on my Harley-Davidson at about 50 lbs . Worked great.Hope that helps |
Question: | Is there an adapter for sixth gen 2017 camaro |
Answer: | Adapters are on their website. There are not many. All you need is the right cap to fit your brake fluid reservoir so an adapter from any manufacturer can be made to work with a little craftmanship (connect the hose). I bought the Dodge cap for a Motive bleeder and cut the hose and made it work. |
Product features
Easy To Use
Just attach the transparent drain hose to the bleeder, then attach the supply line to the brake fluid bleeder handle. Press the brake fluid bleeder handle and hold until all fluid has been drained or use the hold open snap to keep handle held down hands-free. Repeat the process for each wheel until all fluid has been drained. Then add fresh brake fluid to the master cylinder reservoir, and use the brake fluid bleeder to draw the new fluid into the brake system until all air bubbles are out. It's that easy to flush your entire brake system by yourself!
Convenient Design
Thanks to the locking trigger on the handle, you can use this brake fluid bleeder system totally hands-free, so it's easy to change out your brake fluid on your own. And thanks to the transparent hose, you'll always be able to closely monitor your brake fluid as it's removed and replaced.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this capable of getting trapped air out from calipers? A lot of times hand vacuum cant get trapped air out |
Answer: | It usually will if it's just trapped air. If there is a clogged bleeder screw orifice then that will still need to be cleaned out and if there is a blockage in the line it sometimes needs a little help from the pedal but both of those situations are rare. |
Question: | Can this be used with a small compressor? no scfm or cfm on description |
Answer: | It sort of gives min cfm (2) / psi (40) in the pictures of the product. Smaller compressor should be ok, but will take a little longer, since you will need to wait for it to catch up every so often. I've used this with a 4 gal Makita compressor and had to do each wheel with about 5-6 pauses: run it for 15 seconds, stop, wait 30-60 seconds for the compressor to catch up, run another 15 seconds. |
Question: | I have a 92 gmc sierra 4x4 half ton pickup, is there a silicon hose that fits my master cylinder lid? how’s it hook to my reservoir |
Answer: | The unit doesnt hook to the master cylinder, it hooks to the brake bleeder screw at the drum or caliper and vacuum pulls fluid down from the Master Cylinder through the brake system and out the bleeder. The YouTube Video on it, mentions pulling old fluid out of the Master Cylinder, but that is simply inserting the hose in the master cylinder and vacumming the old out like a straw in a cup. |
Question: | How is this for motorcycle brakes |
Answer: | I have used this on both my BMW F650GS and on my 1982 Honda CB900C. My brother in law used it on his ST1300. It was probably the best bleed job on both clutch and brakes we have used. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, just ordered the pump to be use on my 92 964. A youtube video of a 964 brake fluid replacement reference your item. Does this work on |
Answer: | I believe the 964 is essentially a 911, correct? If thats the case then yes it will fit on the fluid reservoir. Just to be certain you could contact Motive products directly for further information. Motive also has a "European Black label" which may be the one you need. Again, this one fits most European cars, but the 911 (964) Porsche could be different. I got this one for my 99 VW Passat, which amazon states does not fit, but it does. |
Question: | Anyone notice blue grease leaking on the bottom of the pump shaft-the part that makes contact with the brake fluid? Is that normal |
Answer: | Mine came like this too and I simply wiped off the extra grease but I also decided I'm only going to use this to put pressure into the brake system and simply keep filling the reservoir in the car. Another reason I rather not use this with brake fluid is because I'll be using this on different cars with incompatible brake fluid. I can't imagine cleaning this in between. Just going to be extra careful to make sure I don't completely drain the cars reservoir. |
Question: | Will this work with a 2015 Audi A3? Can you change adapters to work with other cars (e.g. 2015 Stingray |
Answer: | As long as your car has a resivoir for fluid and the company has the proper cap adapter for your vehicle then yes it will work. Let them know what vehicles you have and buy the correct caps to fit and it should work for both. |
Question: | Will this fit an e46 2002 m |
Answer: | Yup, this fits all BMW vehicles. I've used it on both a 2004 3 series and a 2005 MINI Cooper. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size is the hose i/d |
Answer: | I'm guessing the inside diameter is about 1/16", expanding well beyond 1/8". Basically, for a standard auto brake nipple. |
Question: | What keeps air from going through the threads on bleeder screw when releasing pedal |
Answer: | if you have a crumby bleeder screw and brake calipers that has a lot of high tolerance in between the threads then some air can get thru the threads. just don't unscrew the bleeds screw/zerk all that much. you can tell if the threads were cut with a crappy tap on the caliper when you get brake fluid to also leak around on the threads. I know that the FJ cruisers have that issue from personal experience, but haven't really had a hard time with while brake bleeding other vehicles. |
Question: | How does the check valve work |
Answer: | There is no check valve. You put some brake fluid in the container slightly over the level of the tube that extends to the bottom of the inside of the container. When you pump the brakes, it will then only suck up brake fluid and not air. It actually works very well. Keep an eye on your brake fluid level at the master cylinder! |
Question: | Is it supposed to weep out brake fluid out of the top while your bleeding brakes? Mine does between the black plastic nipple and the red cap |
Answer: | The black plastic nipple is a vent to relieve pressure as the bottle fills with fluid forced in through the center hose. I usually empty the bottle when it's about half full so brake fluid never gets near the vent. This bottle has been used extensively and I have yet to see any fluid weep around the vent.I hope this helps. |

Question: | Does it come with some manual |
Answer: | no!! there is no manual. |
Product description
If you do mechanic work, you probably already know something about bleeding brakes. And one thing you’ve definitely learned over the years is that brake bleeding can be a cumbersome and time-consuming process – particularly for certain vehicles and especially for ABS. Which is why you may be surprised to find out there’s a tool that can make bleeding brakes fast and easy – and oh, we should also mention: extremely simple. It’s called the Phoenix V-5 Light Duty DIY Reverse Brake Bleeder, and we’re certain it’ll change the way you think about brake bleeding. With the Phoenix V-5, one man can bleed the brakes on any vehicle in 10 minutes or less – even if it’s a tough ABS job (you won’t need a scan tool or special clips). Tip: Our Patented Reverse Bleed Technology is what makes this tool so unique. The Phoenix V-5 Reverse Brake Bleeder is a revolutionary tool based on an incredibly obvious concept: Air wants to go up. That’s it. Traditional brake bleeding tools and techniques fight this principle. At Phoenix, we harness it, so you can quickly remove all the air from the whole braking system. Reverse bleeding: It’s an idea so simply and obviously right that most people ask, Why didn’t anyone think of that before?
- Patented Reverse Bleeding removes more trapped air than any other brake bleeder by simply pushing Brake Fluid fluid from the bottom up.
- Reverse bleeding is the only method capable of bleeding tough ABS units without a scan tool.
- Allows you to refill and bleed a completely dry brake or clutch system. Perform Reverse, Vacuum, Pressure and Bench bleeding all with the same tool.
- The V-5 is considered a Light Duty tool for intermittent use. Compatible with DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 brake fluid. (most vehicles use DOT 3 or 4).
- Is the easiest one-person bleeder you will ever use. No more asking your family or friends to help you finish a brake job.
User questions & answers
Question: | My harley tanks dot 5 brake fluid. will this work on my bike? let me know. thanks |
Answer: | You can use the V5 with DOT 5, however you should clean it by pumping denatured alcohol through the tool immediately after use. When left in the tool DOT 5 can lead to a sticking plunger. Also, we don't recommend changing from a DOT 5 to a DOT 3,4 or 5.1 without first consulting the OEM guidelines for your vehicle. This is because DOT 5 is silicon based and DOT 3,4 and 5.1 are all glycol based. |
Question: | In the diagram, the fluid that is pushed out is pushed into a sort of box, where do I get this |
Answer: | I believe the 'box' you are referring to is the master cylinder which is part of the car where the brake fluid is stored. |
Question: | This comes with the clear hose and plastic botle for Fluid |
Answer: | Clear hose yes. Plastic bottle for fluid no. |
Question: | Will this kit do all 3 types of bleeding in the diagrams |
Answer: | This kit does exactly what it says...you can either use the vacuum approach and pull from the fluid reservoir to bleed screws or from new fluid container through bleed screw to the fluid reservoir. |

Bleeding brakes is a fast one-man job when you put air to work for you
So we sent our patented tool to Stacey David of Gearz TV. Stacey knows all about all kinds of vehicles – he works on off-road four wheel drives to hot rod street trucks to ATVs.
Stacey tried out the V-5 at his garage, and this is what he said:
'The Phoenix V-5 DIY brake bleeder will put an end to those ‘white knuckle’ panic stops. With the V-5, in a few short minutes, you'll have the best, firmest pedal that you can get – and it's something one guy can do. It’ll make your life a whole lot easier, just like a good tool is supposed to.'
The V-5 is a brilliant commonsense solution to the age-old challenge of brake bleeding. It allows one person to achieve the best possible pedal.
The V-5 Light Duty Brake Bleeder is Capable of Reverse, Vacuum, Pressure and Bench Brake Bleeding
Often time air gets trapped in a brake component or a bend in a brake line. Traditional pumping of the brake or clutch pedal may not be enough to remove all of the trapped air leaving you with diminished stopping power. We recommend using a combination of Reverse, Vacuum, Pressure and even Bench bleeding when needed to remove all trapped air.

Answer: | Air tool oil not required for the product. |
Question: | Is the top removable, to drain used fluid |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Would a pancake compressor be enough to operate this? I'm only using it for motorcycles |
Answer: | Needs a lot of air to operate properly. I tried a similar similar compressor as you have and my twin 60 gallon 5 hp compressor and the small compressor cannot keep up to work properly. Need upright 60 gallon compressor to keep up with the air supply. |
Question: | Why this kit equipped with two hose |
Answer: | Two hoses are more convenient. The master cylinder evacuation hose with extension thinner corrosion-resistant tube bleeds brake fluid more cleaner. And you don’t have to exchange the thinner tube for the rubber adapter when you bleed the oil in calipers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | One way valve in the bottle - or not? If not, cant see much use for it over an old bottle or jar! Thanks in advance |
Answer: | It’s prob the same using a bottle. I purchased a vac pump which is more convenient |
Question: | What should the correct placement of the bottle be, above or below the level ofthe bleeder valve? The instructions don't show or mention it |
Answer: | If you are planning on using this as a 'one-man' bleeder, as long as the hose loops ABOVE the bleed screw on your caliper, it should work. However, it is FAR easier to have two people and use this product solely as a collection system for the waste fluid. |
Question: | Can you have different hose sizes |
Answer: | This kit comes with one size hose that will not press fit onto the bleeder screw itself. Instead it comes with a tapered adapter that you connect the hose and then push the tapered adapter into the bleed screw til its in tight. |
Question: | Can I do drum brakes with this |
Answer: | Yes. You can do any brakes. Actually a jar and a piece of clear plastic tube works fine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be also used to generate pressure for tests |
Answer: | Yes. The kit comes with a very detailed booklet on how to run different tests. |
Question: | Does it come with a case or something to store it in |
Answer: | It comes in a plastic tray, it can be stored in the tray. If I were going to frequently use the tester I would buy a storage case. |
Question: | I'm using this to make water boil, would this vacuum pump be sufficient enough to get the pressure low enough |
Answer: | No it would not. In addition to not generating enough vacuum, the flaws in this device would not hold the vacuum pressure long enough for the water to boil. |
Question: | Could I also use this (with a longer hose) to siphon the gas out of my broke down car, so that I can put in my new car |
Answer: | I wouldn't. Two reasons: One, this pump moves a small volume of fluid. Good for bleeding brakes but moving gallons would take a long time and you would have to empty the small container many times. Two, the tubing and container are all plastic and I'm not sure if they would react with gasoline or not. Plus, there would be a lot of combustible fumes escaping. Could be dangerous.Modern gas doesn't last long without stabilizers in it, so if it has been in the car long, it isn't worth recovering. If you have to, marine supply stores have rubber bulbs for priming fuel lines. They can be used to safely start a fuel siphon. |

Additional Information
Mityvac is a brand of vacuum-related automotive diagnostic and service repair tools since 1971. Beginning with the design and patent of a single hand-held vacuum pump intended for medical applications, its uses broadened to include automotive diagnostics and service as well as industrial and consumer applications.
The Mityvac MV8000 is a powerful kit that allows a single user to vacuum bleed their clutch and brakes for cars and trucks. The vacuum pump (MV8010) is an extremely versatile service tool that can be used to test a variety of automotive systems and perform a number of useful tasks.
Though the pump has obvious uses for testing various vacuum motors, control valves and vacuum sources, its applications don’t end there. Almost any part or system that requires proper sealing vacuum to operate can be tested with the vacuum pump.
The pump and its accessories also transfer fluids, help to bleed brakes and clutches and aid in other tasks. The pump also meets diagnostic tool requirements when such tools are specified for some state vehicle inspection
programs.
