14 best gas springs

Gas springs, also known as gas struts or gas shocks, are mechanical devices designed to provide controlled and smooth motion in various applications. They are commonly used in automotive, industrial, and furniture industries for tasks involving lifting, supporting, and damping.

Here are some key aspects about gas springs, particularly in an automotive context:

  1. Functionality:

    • Gas springs operate on the principle of compressed gas within a cylinder. When the gas is compressed, it exerts force, allowing the spring to extend or compress. This controlled motion is used for tasks like lifting, supporting, and dampening.
  2. Automotive Applications:

    • Lift Supports: Gas springs are frequently used in vehicles to support the weight of hoods, trunks, and tailgates. They assist in lifting these heavy components and holding them in place.
    • Suspension Systems: Some advanced automotive suspension systems incorporate gas-filled shock absorbers or struts. These help dampen the movement of the vehicle's suspension, providing a smoother ride.
    • Hatches and Doors: Gas springs can be found in applications like rear hatches on SUVs, van side doors, and convertible roof systems. They assist in smoothly and safely opening and closing these components.
    • Seats: In some high-end vehicles, gas springs may be used in seat adjustments to provide ergonomic support and comfort.
  3. Construction:

    • A typical gas spring consists of a cylinder filled with compressed gas, a piston rod, and seals. The gas is typically nitrogen, chosen for its stable and non-reactive properties.
  4. Force and Compression Ratios:

    • Gas springs come in various sizes and configurations to accommodate different force requirements. The force exerted by a gas spring is determined by factors like the size of the cylinder and the pressure of the gas inside.
  5. Installation and Replacement:

    • When replacing gas springs in a vehicle, it's important to match the specifications (e.g., force rating, size, and mounting points) with the original part. Proper installation is crucial for safety and functionality.
  6. Maintenance:

    • Gas springs are generally low-maintenance, but they can wear out over time. Signs of wear may include decreased support, leaking gas, or a noticeable decrease in damping effect. When a gas spring shows signs of failure, it should be replaced.
  7. Safety Considerations:

    • When working with gas springs, especially in automotive applications, it's important to follow safety procedures. This may include using appropriate tools, ensuring proper ventilation (in case of leaks), and taking precautions to avoid pinching or crushing hazards.

Understanding the function and proper usage of gas springs is crucial for ensuring the safety and functionality of various automotive applications. It's recommended to consult with a qualified automotive technician or refer to the manufacturer's guidelines when working with gas springs.

User questions & answers

Question: Will two of these support a 36”x57” door lifted vertically? Door is made of 1x3 trim froame wrapped around 3/4 T&G 6” wide cedar
Answer: I have an outdoor tv cabinet door that is about the same dimensions that you mentioned. I’m looking for lift supports. What did you find that worked? Thanks
Question: Do the mounting brackets swivel for different mounting options on the shock itself
Answer: The mounting bracket does not swivel. It is a ball socket that gets mounted by two screws. The mounting holes or elongated for minor adjustments. The ball socket also allows for a couple degrees of movement so you can mount a little off centered if you have to.
Question: How do I remove the balls from the strut so I can attach them to the frame they're being attached to? Mine did not come with instructions
Answer: There is a clip on the backside of the strut. Once removed, the ball will slip over the connecting part on the mount. Once the shock and bracket are connected and finished, you have to put that clip back into its spot so it’s locked.
Question: Can they be used for a metal lid weighing around 10lbs? I plan on using two shocks per lid. I'm also curious to how soft they close or if they slam
Answer: Depends on where you are mounting the ends. It was a slam shut following the instructions given along with the product. Had to manually calculate the locations to place the end and now it soft closes till the very end.

Great product

Excellent strut! Exactly what I needed to support an overhead cabinet door. The door was about 28" wide and 14" high over a microwave. One strut held it up but I used 2 for balance. Good instructions easy install. Made my day!!

Worked great for my application and the quality seems like they

Great value, works as promised

Great value, works as promised. I used these to hold the lid of a coffee table/chest. Installation is a breeze and the directions were easy to follow, take note that measurements are metric so you can convert them with a smartphone or use a metric ruler.

Great product for the money

Did the job nicely. I wanted a self-opening and stay-open lid on the nest box on my chicken coop so my 3 year old could open it and not worry about it slamming down on her head or fingers as she reached in. Success! The lid on my nest box is 14" x 30", framed in 2x2 lumber, with sheathing, tar paper, drip edge, and shingles on it, so it's relatively heavy. Just one strut was able to hold it open, but self-opening was non-existent and it still slammed shut quite hard

User questions & answers

Question: First 250n hinge installed held lid open and soft closes. second hinge holds the lid open and it can't be closed. lid stays wide open. is this right
Answer: I had a very heavy lid for a window seat. My experience is the same. First hinge held it up and second hinge made it so it had to be manually closed. These were the fourth type of hinges I tried and the only ones that worked.
Question: What is the difference between the 200N and 250N
Answer: The size of the support weight is different. The 200N hinge is the lid that can support the 200N weight, and the 250N hinge is the lid that can support the 250N weight.
Question: I've got a 3/4 walnut top that's 48" x 48". It's right around 40lbs. Will these work for a top of that size
Answer: No it won't. I have exactly a 40 lb. lid and two 200N would not soft close it. It leaves a pretty hard slam.
Question: Can I use a piano hinge , or do I need self close hinges also
Answer: Yes, Both are

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be modified to use on pull down cabinets rather pull up? than
Answer: I guess they could be used for pull down cabinets, but I can't think of why I'd want to do that. It seems that gravity would keep the doors down. The gas struts are used to counteract gravity, which would act to lower the item you're trying to keep up. Now if your pull down doors are spring-loaded to close, then I guess the struts would be helpful.
Question: What is the diameter of the round mounting bracket? I have only a 3/4" board to mount it on and it looks much larger than that in the picture
Answer: The round mounting bracket is 1and 3/32 in diameter. The oblong bracket is 1/2 x 1 and 1/2"
Question: I have been unable to extend or collapse these, had other people look at them and they can't figure it out either, what am I missing
Answer: Force. It takes a lot of force if you push them by hand it is very difficult. When placed into an application you often have a 5+ times multiplier of force and it seems easy to compress.
Question: what are the dimensions of this item
Answer: When I ordered these, I really had no idea of the dimensions. The 7" is the center to center distance of the mounting holes (at right angles to the long dimension). The LOA (to outside of mounts) is 8". The useful travel is roughly 2 1/4". Body about 5/8" in diameter. End mounts are threaded on and could be replaced. Looks like a M6-1.0, but a 1/4-28 nut also seems to work.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it 15” contracted or expanded
Answer: contracted. It is a 65lb pull. Not for a cabinet or something light weight. I can not extend it or contract it by hand.
Question: If i were to put these on a cabinet door under pressure and locked the door, when the door was unlocked would it open the door with out help
Answer: It would depend on 2 factors: 1) positioning of the struts, and 2) weight of cabinet doors I used mine to replace hinges on a 1976 camper hatch. Heavy hatch door, back in the day when they built solid items. I still have to initiate opening the hatch, but when I get to a certain point, less than halfway, the struts take over and hatch raises on its own and stays open.
Question: Would these fit on an MR
Answer: Whoa! NO. These are rated to lift 67 Pounds EACH. There is no lid/hatch on Mister 2 with lifting weight half of that. To find which strut-pair lift rating is suitable for your application you must first determine the lifting weight of each hinged cover, then divide that by 2. Cheers!
Question: Will these hold lid open 90 degrees from a cabinet that is perpendicular to th floor
Answer: They'll hold the lid at any angle you want them to. It all depends on where you mount them on the lid and on the cabinet.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 90 lb trap door in a floor. Will two of these keep it from slamming shut and lock in place at over 90 degrees
Answer: I cannot give you a precise answer, since I have used them for a different application. However, the two struts allow me to raise a heavy plunge router mounted to a heavy table top (24" X 36") using fingertip pressure and remain open at an angle greater than ninety degrees. The size and weight of your trap door may give you different results, of course.
Question: This is my first strut, it doesnt move at all...is there something im missing
Answer: Firstly, I’m very SORRY for your difficult experience while using our product. These powerful springs is difficult to be compressed by hand. Please check again.can you check it with force 300N again? If you unhappy with the purchase, please let us know for a FREE REPLACEMENT or FULL REFUND
Question: What is the nut and thread size for the nut that screws on each and of the strut to secure it in the provided brackets
Answer: Mine are not 5/16, but rather the closest metric size
Question: will these hold open and stay from 40 to 60 degrees, or any angle between 0 and their fully extended length
Answer: I am not sure... I do know the struts will try to extend to their maximum lift so I would think they wouldn't stay put at a given position. They are not that expensive so worth a try. I used them for our high school robotics team to assist in lifting an arm.

Question: are these struts easy to install
Answer: I used standard twist-on electrical wire connectors you can get at any hardware store. If you want to know the specific code you'll need to look into what the code is for your community since codes do vary some. I was also able to remove just one of the knockouts to insert the wires but it was a tight fit.
Question: Could anyone share some installation experience
Answer: Both, but I used it for existing construction through drywall ceiling attaching to bottom cord of the trusses. Hardest part was removing old box without tearing up the drywall. Hope this helps!

User questions & answers

Question: what is the ball socket size for these
Answer: 10mm ball mount compatible. Thank you!
Question: Do these come with mounting instructions (measurements)? I’m planning to use these for overhead opening for flat sceen tv cover
Answer: Im not sure but for an overhead tv, you might need something stronger than 10 lbs.
Question: what is the force fully extended and what is the force fully compressed? I asked this question a week or two ago and haven't seen a reply
Answer: I would say 40bls lift force fully open. The compressed force is only for the ready position and the 40lbs is for the action part of the shock. Good luck.
Question: Does it come with 4 10mm ball studs (was her and nuts
Answer: I do not remember it coming with any ball studs. I replaced a damaged one on an RV which already had the ball studs.
