11 best power pullers
Power pullers, also known as come-alongs or cable pullers, are versatile mechanical devices commonly used in automotive, construction, and various other industries for tasks that require lifting, pulling, or tensioning heavy objects. They provide a manual means of generating substantial force to move or position objects that would be difficult to handle manually. Here are some key points about power pullers:
Basic Design: A typical power puller consists of a steel cable or wire rope wound around a drum or spool. One end of the cable is attached to an anchor point or the object to be moved, while the other end is attached to a ratcheting or winding mechanism. The user operates a lever or handle to wind the cable onto the drum, creating tension and generating pulling force.
Capacity: Power pullers come in various sizes and capacities, ranging from small units capable of pulling a few hundred pounds to larger models that can handle several tons of force. The choice of power puller depends on the specific task and the weight of the object being moved.
Applications: In the automotive context, power pullers are often used for tasks such as removing engines or transmissions, straightening bent vehicle frames, or extracting vehicles stuck in mud or snow. They are also useful for a wide range of non-automotive applications, including construction, forestry, and agriculture.
Safety: Proper use of power pullers is essential to ensure safety. Users should follow manufacturer instructions and guidelines to prevent accidents. It's important to inspect the equipment for wear and damage before use and to use appropriate safety equipment, such as gloves and eye protection.
Types: There are two main types of power pullers:
- Ratcheting Pullers: These operate by ratcheting, allowing the user to pull the cable in one direction while preventing it from slipping in the opposite direction. This design provides precise control.
- Continuous Pullers: Continuous pullers do not have a ratcheting mechanism. They allow the cable to be pulled in both directions, which can be faster but requires careful control to prevent over-pulling.
Accessories: Some power pullers come with additional accessories, such as hooks, chains, or specialized attachments, to accommodate various tasks and load types.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is important to ensure the longevity and safe operation of power pullers. This includes inspecting the cable for wear and damage, lubricating moving parts, and keeping the device clean and free of debris.
Transport and Storage: Power pullers are typically portable and can be transported easily. When not in use, they should be stored in a dry and secure location to prevent damage and theft.
In summary, power pullers are valuable tools in the automotive and industrial sectors, providing a mechanical advantage for tasks involving heavy lifting and pulling. Their versatility and capacity make them essential equipment for professionals who need to move heavy objects with precision and control.

Answer: | If your setup is correct then yes you would have no problem lowering 500lbs slowly down |
Question: | Does the winch come with everything pictured, winch, handle and pulley |
Answer: | No, just what you see on the box. My son showed me how to use it. Look for an answer that I posted for another buyer, see if it helps. |
Question: | Is this an authentic Wyeth-Scott puller? It appears to be a different shade of red in the picture and is less expensive than comparable sites |
Answer: | It took my son to figure it out for me. There is a spring that you have to engage in. Look closely at the spring and you will see the notches. Move it side to side. Hope this helps. Happy towing!!! |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | The description does say for "Lifting, Pulling, Stretching". That being said you might want to look for a hoist as this thing isn't the sturdiest thing out there though it was fine for what I used it for (stretching wire deer fencing). |

User questions & answers
Question: | can I use this to tighten a zip line cable |
Answer: | American Power Pull has replacements for most parts on this item. If you contact them they will send you a parts breakdown. |
Question: | To what length will it extend |
Answer: | 5/16" |
Question: | Why is it that the "solid steel" gears and pawls do not attract a magnet |
Answer: | Do not buy this cable puller, it is a knock off, we had two break right away. I would get the expensive one from company direct |
Question: | Is this come along easy to release |
Answer: | Using pulley block, puller capacity is 4 tons (within past few years capacity was re-certified from 3 tons to 4 tons, per American Power Pull) with 10 feet of reach: total length of cable was also changed, from 18 feet to 20 feet. So you got 4 tons with 10 feet of reach (with pulley block hook), or 2 tons with 20 feet of reach. Have used it upwards of 6,500 pounds several times with no problems. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a youtube video on the operation of this |
Answer: | Yes, you can use this to temporarily tighten your zip line cable, however, a proper sized turnbuckle would be advisable for permanent attachment. |
Question: | Are the gears steel? Are there two? Where is it manufactured |
Answer: | 10 to 12 feet working length but can be used with a longer cable or strap to reach longer distances. Any longer cable on the puller would be too bulky. |
Question: | Is there an instruction manual or directions for this |
Answer: | There are various versions of stainless steel. Carbon is the component that is removed to make steel more corrosion resistant. But removing carbon also makes the steel softer. So some stainless is magnetic, and the ones with very little carbon are not magnetic, I don't care how strong your magnet is. To give back some strength to the metal after removing the carbon, they usually add nickel. That's like 301 Stainless. However there is a 'cheaper' version that adds no nickel, only aluminum and magnesium. Honestly, I'm not sure what these gears are made of, but they are SOFT. Very soft when filing. I suspect this is the cheapest version of stainless, the 201. I have tried to find out from the seller what the gears are made of. But they have no idea. |
Question: | Can i use this to pull a car frame back straight from the side i had a lot of people tell me i can use one of these |
Answer: | Yes, I find it very easy to release. Under load, you release in reverse. Under no load, release and pulling out the cable is extremely easy. I use this to put up a supporting beam 2k lbs all by myself. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this of USA |
Answer: | its very easy. just attach the hook to something and flip the little switch to engage ratchet and just crank away. or you can take the hook on the end of the cable and attach it to the base of the come-along, and then attach the hook with the pulley to the object your anchoring to and it will give you 2x the pulling power. |
Question: | Sirve para sacar pulin de la bomba de la direccion asistida moto |
Answer: | The sprocket is metal. Whether it is steel or some type of aluminum alloy, I am not sure. There aren't multiple gears. Just a wheel with s sprocket/teeth and s ratcheting wheel. I've only used it a few times. I pulled my mower out of a mud pit with no problem. The more heavy duty application I used it for was pulling out a dented in bumper. I have a 2003 F-250 Super Duty. I strapped one end to a flatbed and the hook to the bumper and cranked on it. It pulled the bent bumper right into place. That's a lot of torque. |
Question: | Does this work on a 79 chevy c10 with a 350 sbc |
Answer: | There was a short instruction sheet with mine. I think it was just 1 or 2 pages. |
Question: | Will this pull the power steering pully off a 1997 toyota 4runner |
Answer: | Depending on how bad and where in the frame you might be able too. I know it will pull a car with a locked down transmission like it was nothing. For the money its probably with the chance. I am happy with it but that was not my intended use. |

User questions & answers
Question: | will this tool work to remove the power steering pully from a 98 chevy 5.7L v |
Answer: | If you use at least 2 pullys |
Question: | Will this work on a Chrysler 3.3L |
Answer: | Maybe. Trying to racket if stuck good is very difficult. High centered my Tacoma in snow and gave up trying to rachect using technique you described. Fortunately another Taco popped me right out. |
Question: | Will this work on a ford taurus power steering pully |
Answer: | it is made in Taiwan. |
Question: | Will this kit remove the power steering pulley from my 2007 Ford Focus |
Answer: | Actually, the useful pull is only 2' 9" I've looked at all the "4-ton / 5-ton" come-alongs priced less than 100 bucks, and man it looks like they're *ALL* being made by one Chinese factory and just being re-branded. They all have the same lever, the same crappy handle, the same laminated gears and pawls... This one is somewhat the exception, and it's looking like the winner. The handle alone sets it above the others. Then there's the fitted storage case, the solid steel gears, the 1/4" cable... The only problem is the reach. It's pathetic. So I'm thinking about getting it anyway and dealing with the reach problem in one or both of two ways: 1) Replace the steel cable with 3/16" Dyneema rope, two lays of which will handle at least 11,000 lbs. Between the Dyneema being smaller and laying in the spool better, I figure this will at least double the reach to 5-plus feet. You can get pre-made Dyneema winch line this size with one eye already made. You'll have to figure out the right length and make the other eye yourself, for which you'll also need a 3/16" fib, a pusher, and knowing what you're doing (YT vids). Also make sure to re-work the spool including the cable attachment, the cable "fairlead," and the hook pulley so there are no rough spots, sharp edges, burrs, etc. anywhere. 2) Set up your pulls so that you're hooking onto and pulling a length of chain you can lock between pulls. The locking is done with a separate chain, anchored parallel to the come-along, that has a grab hook on the end. This way you can pull 5 feet, lock the pull chain with the lock chain, re-hook for the next 5 feet, etc. Your length of pull under load is then limited only by the amount of pull chain you did your set-up with. The unmodified puller can be used this way too-- you'll just be re-hooking more often. Hope that helps. Be careful, stay safe, don't ever stop being scared of doing this stuff! One mistake can ruin your whole day. |
