14 best engine paints
Engine paints are specially formulated coatings designed for use on automotive engines. These paints serve both functional and aesthetic purposes, providing a protective layer against corrosion, heat resistance, and enhancing the overall appearance of the engine compartment. It's important to choose high-quality engine paints that can withstand the extreme conditions engines often endure.
Here are key features and considerations related to engine paints:
Heat Resistance:
- Engine paints are formulated to withstand high temperatures generated by the engine. They typically have heat-resistant properties to prevent peeling or fading when exposed to elevated temperatures.
Corrosion Protection:
- Corrosion is a concern in the harsh environment of an engine compartment. Engine paints often contain corrosion inhibitors to protect metal surfaces from rust and deterioration.
Oil and Chemical Resistance:
- Since engines can be exposed to oil and other chemicals, engine paints are designed to resist damage from these substances. This ensures that the paint maintains its appearance and protective qualities.
Fast Drying:
- Many engine paints are designed to dry quickly, allowing for faster application and reducing the risk of dust or debris settling on the wet paint surface.
Adhesion:
- Engine paints are formulated for excellent adhesion to metal surfaces, ensuring a durable and long-lasting finish. Proper surface preparation, such as cleaning and priming, is often essential for optimal adhesion.
Color Options:
- Engine paints come in a variety of colors, allowing vehicle owners to customize the appearance of their engine compartments. Common colors include black, silver, and various metallic finishes.
Priming:
- Some engine paints may require a primer for better adhesion and durability. It's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the use of primers to achieve the best results.
Spray Application:
- Engine paints are often available in spray cans for easy and even application. Spray painting is convenient for covering intricate engine components and achieving a uniform finish.
Durability:
- Engine paints should be durable enough to withstand the vibrations, heat, and other stresses experienced by the engine.A durable paint finish contributes to the overall protection and longevity of the engine compartment.
When using engine paints, it's advisable to follow proper safety precautions, such as using appropriate personal protective equipment and working in a well-ventilated area. Additionally, carefully read and follow the instructions provided by the paint manufacturer to ensure the best results and long-term durability of the painted surfaces.

Question: | how well would this product work painting my car dis brake calipers |

Question: | Does this have to heat up in order to cure? or can it be sprayed and then withstand up to 500' temps?using inside headlight housing:projector retrofit |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this on a wood burning fireplace firebox |
Answer: | Yes especially if it is an alloy box but if the box is made of wood you might want to seal and prime it with the high temperature primer first and make sure that there are no cracks before you go over it with the rust oleum high temp paint, for best results! |
Question: | Can I use this paint to spray the outside of a wood burning stove |
Answer: | I bought 6 cabs and did my gas grill inside and out. After it cured, I ran it for 30 minutes without food. I have a "holder" to grill fish so I am using that for all cooking so I and not cooking directly on the painted area. If after a month it holds up, I will do test cooking on it directly for the stray cats. |
Question: | Paint scratches off very easily 2 days later, even after curing at 200 and 400 degrees. Prepped with degreaser and 150 grit sandpaper. What could I have done wrong |
Answer: | You did not do anything wrong. This particular paint is not durable at all, but it withstands very very high temps. If you need high heat AND durability, then you need to look into some of the high heat Cerakote and Duracoat products, which are much more involved in applying than this is. I just answered another question on here, and in that answer I mentioned watching YouTube vids of ppl using this paint. In this vids, you'll see they are very delicate w the painted objects after cured when re-installing the object in a car engine compartment, for example. The ONLY thing this paint is good at is withstanding very high heat and being applied relatively easily and cheaply. Ps. I guess I should mention that this product is sometimes sold as an "enamel" but this particular paint is not truly what you'd call an enamel. Enamel implies high durability, and this does not have high durability. |
Question: | What temperatures are required to cure the paint multiple times at various temperatures in an oven? Will the final coating survive any contact with food |
Answer: | 24 hours AFTER painted - place in oven one hour @ 175 degrees. A second curing a few hours later is sometimes helpful.Any contact with food in either direction is bad. (part to food / food to part)Make sure wife is out of town.Cook 2 or 3 pizzas one after another to help disguise smell. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on gym equipment? Looking to paint my squat rack neon green. Thx |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | Has anyone had luck with the VHT clear coat enamel? Does it last and resist chemicals |
Answer: | Hey Josh, Pretty much like any other Clear Coat. It does work. Should re spray a couple of coats. It will last for awhile, depending how it's used!! Hope this helps! {wolfman} |
Question: | can i use this on my brake calipers |
Answer: | Yes. I've used it on my brake calipers and it works great. Depending on how much you drive you may have to touch it up to keep it bright every so often but that's going to happen regardless of what paint you use because brake dust, etc. I use this because its high temperature. |
Question: | Is it OK to use a gray primer and then use a hot pink paint over top of the gray |
Answer: | Primer of any kind will be good for a nice finish for whatever you are painting. I recommend 3 light coats of primer lightly sanded in between. When getting ready to apply you engine paint, beware, this is thick paint. It has heavy particulate matter which is the paint. I recommend that you turn the paint can upside down for 3 to 4 hours. This paint settles heavily. After several hours upside down, shake violently to get it mixed well. After that don't spray too close to your target surface. Do not spray at any temp less than 72 degrees fahrenheit, and spray evenly side to side about 5 to 6 inches, from surface. |
