12 best engine enamel paints

Engine enamel paints are a type of paint specifically formulated for application on engines and other automotive components. These paints are designed to withstand high temperatures, chemicals, and other harsh conditions that automotive engines may be exposed to. They provide a protective and decorative coating to engine surfaces, helping to prevent corrosion and enhance the overall appearance of the engine bay.

Key characteristics of engine enamel paints include:

  1. Heat Resistance: Engine enamel paints are formulated to withstand high temperatures generated by the engine. This is crucial as engines can reach elevated temperatures during operation.

  2. Chemical Resistance: These paints are resistant to oil, grease, gasoline, and other automotive fluids that engines come into contact with. This resistance helps protect the underlying surfaces from corrosion and damage.

  3. Durability: Engine enamel paints are designed to be durable, providing a long-lasting finish that can withstand the harsh conditions of an engine compartment.

  4. Adhesion: Good adhesion is essential to ensure that the paint adheres well to the surface and provides effective protection.Engine enamel paints are formulated to adhere to various materials commonly found in engine components.

  5. Quick Drying: Many engine enamel paints dry relatively quickly, allowing for faster application and reducing the risk of dust or debris settling on the wet paint.

  6. Variety of Colors: Engine enamel paints come in a variety of colors, allowing automotive enthusiasts to customize the appearance of their engine bays.

When using engine enamel paints, it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for preparation, application, and curing. Surface preparation, including cleaning and priming, is crucial to ensure proper adhesion and longevity of the paint job. Additionally, some paints may require heat curing to achieve their maximum heat resistance and durability.

It's recommended to use engine enamel paints in a well-ventilated area, and appropriate safety precautions, such as wearing protective gear, should be taken during the painting process.

Overall, engine enamel paints are a popular choice for those looking to protect and enhance the appearance of their automotive engine components.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work on gym equipment? Looking to paint my squat rack neon green. Thx
Answer: yes
Question: Has anyone had luck with the VHT clear coat enamel? Does it last and resist chemicals
Answer: Hey Josh, Pretty much like any other Clear Coat. It does work. Should re spray a couple of coats. It will last for awhile,depending how it's used!! Hope this helps! {wolfman}
Question: can i use this on my brake calipers
Answer: Yes. I've used it on my brake calipers and it works great. Depending on how much you drive you may have to touch it up to keep it bright every so often but that's going to happen regardless of what paint you use because brake dust, etc. I use this because its high temperature.
Question: Is it OK to use a gray primer and then use a hot pink paint over top of the gray
Answer: Primer of any kind will be good for a nice finish for whatever you are painting. I recommend 3 light coats of primer lightly sanded in between. When getting ready to apply you engine paint, beware, this is thick paint. It has heavy particulate matter which is the paint. I recommend that you turn the paint can upside down for 3 to 4 hours. This paint settles heavily. After several hours upside down, shake violently to get it mixed well. After that don't spray too close to your target surface. Do not spray at any temp less than 72 degrees fahrenheit, and spray evenly side to side about 5 to 6 inches, from surface.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this on a wood burning fireplace firebox
Answer: Yes especially if it is an alloy box but if the box is made of wood you might want to seal and prime it with the high temperature primer first and make sure that there are no cracks before you go over it with the rust oleum high temp paint, for best results!
Question: Can I use this paint to spray the outside of a wood burning stove
Answer: I bought 6 cabs and did my gas grill inside and out. After it cured, I ran it for 30 minutes without food. I have a "holder" to grill fish so I am using that for all cooking so I and not cooking directly on the painted area. If after a month it holds up, I will do test cooking on it directly for the stray cats.
Question: Paint scratches off very easily 2 days later, even after curing at 200 and 400 degrees. Prepped with degreaser and 150 grit sandpaper. What could I have done wrong
Answer: You did not do anything wrong. This particular paint is not durable at all, but it withstands very very high temps. If you need high heat AND durability, then you need to look into some of the high heat Cerakote and Duracoat products, which are much more involved in applying than this is. I just answered another question on here, and in that answer I mentioned watching YouTube vids of ppl using this paint. In this vids, you'll see they are very delicate w the painted objects after cured when re-installing the object in a car engine compartment, for example. The ONLY thing this paint is good at is withstanding very high heat and being applied relatively easily and cheaply. Ps. I guess I should mention that this product is sometimes sold as an "enamel" but this particular paint is not truly what you'd call an enamel. Enamel implies high durability, and this does not have high durability.
Question: What temperatures are required to cure the paint multiple times at various temperatures in an oven? Will the final coating survive any contact with food
Answer: 24 hours AFTER painted - place in oven one hour @ 175 degrees. A second curing a few hours later is sometimes helpful.Any contact with food in either direction is bad. (part to food / food to part)Make sure wife is out of town.Cook 2 or 3 pizzas one after another to help disguise smell.

User questions & answers

Question: What are the mixing ratios for a hvlp gun
Answer: I painted it on with a brush.
Question: Does this paint chip
Answer: This paint is very durable considering it is on an engine, but like any coating, if struck with a steel tool, it could chip. Even electroplated finishes can chip under the right circumstances.
Question: Does this paint require a clear coat? If so do you carry a hi temperature clear
Answer: I don't think it needs a clear coat because it seems to hold up pretty well on my brake drums. I painted them on April 2016 and they still look great. The paint seems to be thick but goes on well. The paint goes a long way to me seeing as I didn't hardly use much at all to paint 2 drums on the rear. Expensive but great paint. Hope this helps ! Thanks
Question: Do you need to prime
Answer: Yes, use Por-15 Metal prep over bare metal. My engine was about 1/2 decent paint, and 1/2 rusted metal. I cleaned off the rust, userd the metal prep over the entire surface, and it worked well. I'd also recommend the Por-15 Engine Degreaser too for the initial cleaning.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this to paint my hot water boiler box in my house
Answer: i am using this to paint my truck engine, and it would be a lot hotter then your hot water boiler box in your house. So I wouldn't think you would have a problem.
Question: Has anyone used this on brake calipers, and if so, what were the results
Answer: Yes i have used it before and did a good job.
Question: do you need any type of reducer or hardener to spry it
Answer: No you don’t but clean your gun real fast and of course use a good quality respirator, POR has a thinner/reducer for the POR 15. I dare say lacquer thinners might do just as well. It doesn't take much thinning for spraying so the stuff goes a long way.
Question: How is it applied
Answer: I used a chip brush. There cheap and you can throw at out after each use. Just make sure you wear disposable gloves, you don't want to get any on your hands. This is great paint and easy to apply.
