9 best high heat paint for fireplace
High-heat paint, also known as high-temperature paint, is specially formulated to withstand extreme temperatures without breaking down or emitting harmful fumes. This type of paint is commonly used for surfaces that are exposed to high levels of heat, such as fireplace surrounds, stoves, and grills. Here are some key features and considerations regarding high-heat paint:
Temperature Resistance: High-heat paint is designed to withstand elevated temperatures, often exceeding traditional paint tolerances. It can handle temperatures typically found around fireplaces and stoves.
Applications: This type of paint is commonly used on surfaces made of metal, such as fireplace inserts, stoves, and grills. It provides both decorative and protective functions.
Formulation: High-heat paint is formulated with special heat-resistant pigments and binders that prevent the paint from peeling, cracking, or discoloring when exposed to high temperatures.
Color Options: High-heat paint is available in various colors, allowing homeowners to choose a finish that complements their décor. Common colors include black, brown, and metallic finishes.
Surface Preparation: Proper surface preparation is crucial for the paint to adhere effectively. It's recommended to clean the surface thoroughly and, in some cases, use a high-temperature primer before applying the high-heat paint.
Application Method: High-heat paint can be applied using brushes, rollers, or sprayers. The application method may depend on the specific product and the surface being painted.
Drying Time: Allow sufficient drying time between coats, and follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding curing time before exposing the painted surface to high temperatures.
Durability: High-heat paint is known for its durability and resistance to chipping or peeling, even under extreme conditions. This makes it suitable for long-term use in high-heat environments.
Ventilation: When applying high-heat paint, ensure proper ventilation in the area. Some paints may emit fumes during the application process, and adequate ventilation helps disperse these fumes.
Brand and Quality: Choose a reputable brand known for producing high-quality high-heat paint. Reading product reviews and customer feedback can help you gauge the performance of a specific product.
Compatibility: Ensure that the high-heat paint you choose is compatible with the material of the surface you intend to paint, whether it's metal, ceramic, or another material.
By selecting a high-quality high-heat paint and following proper application procedures, you can enhance the appearance of your fireplace or stove while ensuring that the paint maintains its integrity even in high-temperature conditions.

User questions & answers
Question: | can u spray it |
Answer: | Yes, you can. I used seven parts of paint to one part mineral spirits. 30 psi at the spray gun. Wonderful results and much less expensive than spray cans. |
Question: | Is this a paint that can be easily removed from brushes with soap and water |
Answer: | You don't specify what type of Rust-Oleum paint you have. I find most rust-oleum paints are of an oil base and thus would require a mineral base thinner to clean brushes. |
Question: | can this be used on a stove hood |
Answer: | Yes. It is a good choice for stove hoods. It has a temp range up to 1200 degrees. If you get our stove hood that hot, you deserve to burn your house down and write a book how you did it. |
Question: | I will be painting a bbq smoker. how would you recommend to prep the surface before applying the paint |
Answer: | I would at least knock off the rust then wipe it down with thinner, mineral spirits or other solvent. The cleaner you get the metal, the better the paint will bond. I put it on my BBQ grill, I didn't put a lot of effort into prep and cleaning, just knocked off the loose rust and paint, it still looks pretty good. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this on a wood burning fireplace firebox |
Answer: | Yes especially if it is an alloy box but if the box is made of wood you might want to seal and prime it with the high temperature primer first and make sure that there are no cracks before you go over it with the rust oleum high temp paint, for best results! |
Question: | Can I use this paint to spray the outside of a wood burning stove |
Answer: | I bought 6 cabs and did my gas grill inside and out. After it cured, I ran it for 30 minutes without food. I have a "holder" to grill fish so I am using that for all cooking so I and not cooking directly on the painted area. If after a month it holds up, I will do test cooking on it directly for the stray cats. |
Question: | Paint scratches off very easily 2 days later, even after curing at 200 and 400 degrees. Prepped with degreaser and 150 grit sandpaper. What could I have done wrong |
Answer: | You did not do anything wrong. This particular paint is not durable at all, but it withstands very very high temps. If you need high heat AND durability, then you need to look into some of the high heat Cerakote and Duracoat products, which are much more involved in applying than this is. I just answered another question on here, and in that answer I mentioned watching YouTube vids of ppl using this paint. In this vids, you'll see they are very delicate w the painted objects after cured when re-installing the object in a car engine compartment, for example. The ONLY thing this paint is good at is withstanding very high heat and being applied relatively easily and cheaply. Ps. I guess I should mention that this product is sometimes sold as an "enamel" but this particular paint is not truly what you'd call an enamel. Enamel implies high durability, and this does not have high durability. |
Question: | What temperatures are required to cure the paint multiple times at various temperatures in an oven? Will the final coating survive any contact with food |
Answer: | 24 hours AFTER painted - place in oven one hour @ 175 degrees. A second curing a few hours later is sometimes helpful.Any contact with food in either direction is bad. (part to food / food to part)Make sure wife is out of town.Cook 2 or 3 pizzas one after another to help disguise smell. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be rolled or brushed on? Will it leave brush marks on a cast iron stove? Wondering if I should go with a spray vs this paint |
Answer: | I brushed it onto the stainless steel stove pipe so it would match our stove. With 2 coats, I havent noticed any brush marks, but I havent gotten right up on it. From 2-3 feet away, it just looks matted black, and you dont get the runs you'll get with spray paint. |
Question: | Can this be used to paint cast iron gas stove burner grates?? Thanks |
Answer: | We used this paint on our firewall in our fire place and it worked great. Really gave the fireplace a new, clean look. The paint is a flat finish so using it for stove grates may not look attractive. Our gas stove grates have a factory high gloss finish and wipe clean very easily. I suggest you go to Rutland's website and see if the paint is available in other finishes. Good Luck. |
Question: | Would this adhere to tile/brick around a firplace |
Answer: | It will definitely adhere to the brick. I have used it inside my fireplaces on several new homes to keep the firebox black. It will eventually burn off in some places on so I just repaint it every couple of years. |
Question: | Can I use it to paint the inside of a wood burning brick fireplace |
Answer: | Good to know about not using it inside a fireplace. The description said it was "Adheres to steel, cast iron, aluminum, brick, and most other metals" and I almost bought it for the bricks inside my fireplace! |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the finish? Flat, glossy |
Answer: | Flat finish has a pale color, glossy has a shine to color. |
Question: | is this good to paint my heater metal cover, its pealing |
Answer: | Yes , after you remove the pealing paint, spray on. |
Question: | Can I spray on the interior of an old charcoal grill that I'm trying to fix up |
Answer: | I needed to do the same with my old grill. Inside the top the old paint was flakening off. After scraping I sprayed on with the Krylon. The problem was that additional flakening continued to occur and hence more flaks falling on the food. Maybe if you took the grill top off and sanded it completely then all would be okay in using the Krylon. |
Question: | COLOR |
Answer: | It's a flat black. I used it on my fireplace insert and it dried looking like cast iron. Very nice. |

Answer: | that's why i purchased it, no other product lasted on my electric stove top. this product has not discolored since i put it on about 3 months ago. all other stove top paints did not work,, glad to help |
Question: | Can I use an exhaust manifold without having to use a high temperature primer |
Answer: | My guess would be no, it's for high heat but probably not that high. I just spray the outside and legs after winter. It does a great job of covering the rust on my cheapo Walmart BBQ. Makes it look brand new every spring, this is my third season using it. |
Question: | Wii it stick to stoneWalled this work on a couple of stones behind a fireplace |
Answer: | I used this for the exterior of my BBQ grill not the metal racks but the enclosure/ exterior body. I personally would not spray this on my oven racks for safety reasons. |
Question: | can i use this on exterior wood stove |
Answer: | Here is a list of the contents; lead is not one of them: Acetone, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Xylene, Ethylbenzene, Iron Manganese Oxide, Magnesium Silicate, Copper Chromite Black, Solvent Naptha, Light Aromatic, 1,2,4 Trimethylbenzene, and Carbon Black |
