12 best generator oils

Generator oils, also known as generator lubricating oils or genset oils, are specialized lubricants designed for use in power generators. These oils are related to motor oils and fall under the broader category of automotive oils and fluids. Here are some key points about generator oils:

  1. Purpose: Generator oils are used to lubricate the internal components of power generators, including engines and other moving parts. Proper lubrication is essential to reduce friction, heat, and wear, which helps extend the lifespan and ensure the efficient operation of the generator.

  2. Formulation: Generator oils are formulated to meet the specific requirements of power generation equipment. They are typically high-quality, heavy-duty oils with additives that enhance their performance in generator applications. These additives may include antioxidants, detergents, and anti-wear agents.

  3. Viscosity: Generator oils come in different viscosity grades to match the operating conditions of the generator. The viscosity of the oil affects its flow and lubricating properties. Choosing the right viscosity grade is crucial for optimal generator performance.

  4. Temperature Range: Generator oils are designed to operate within a wide temperature range, as generators can be used in various environments and weather conditions. They must maintain their viscosity and lubricating properties at both high and low temperatures.

  5. Protection: Generator oils provide protection against corrosion, rust, and oxidation, which can damage the generator's internal components. They also help to keep the engine clean by preventing the buildup of deposits and sludge.

  6. Compatibility: Generator oils should be compatible with the materials used in the generator's engine and other components. Compatibility is essential to prevent damage to seals, gaskets, and other critical parts.

  7. Oil Change Intervals: Manufacturers typically provide guidelines for oil change intervals based on the type of generator and its usage. Regular oil changes are essential to maintain the generator's performance and prolong its lifespan.

  8. Storage: Proper storage of generator oils is crucial to maintain their quality. They should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

  9. Environmental Considerations: Some generator oils are designed to meet environmental regulations and standards, such as emissions requirements. These oils may be low in sulfur and other pollutants to minimize their environmental impact.

  10. Maintenance: In addition to regular oil changes, proper maintenance of the generator, including filter changes and inspections, is essential to ensure its reliability and longevity.

It's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines when selecting and using generator oils to ensure the proper functioning of your power generator. Using the right oil and following maintenance procedures can help prevent costly breakdowns and ensure a consistent power supply.

User questions & answers

Question: Are you supposed to use synthetic or regular oil
Answer: For your generac generator this is what is called for
Question: Can This oil be used for a 7000 watt running Briggs & Stratton generato
Answer: I think any good small engine oil will work. It’s just a matter of preference.
Question: Is this synthetic oil
Answer: No. This 10W-30 oil is not synthetic. Most full synthetic oil will clearly say it on the front of the bottle I have noticed. Because many oils come in both options. This oil is basic oil that is used in most small engines like generators, lawn mowers, etc. If you want/need synthetic oil, you can get the Generac 5w-30 full synthetic oil. However, that thicker oil is typically meant for really cold temperatures.

Briggs & Stratton Engine Oil

Briggs & Stratton small engine oil is designed and proven to meet the demands of 4-cycle engines. Our oil products have been approved by Briggs & Stratton engineers, recommended in all operator manuals, and is a high-quality detergent oil classified SJ/CD by the API.

Small engine oil type recommendations:

Different oil types can work best at certain temperatures. Learn which one to choose for your climate:

  • SAE 30- Warmer temperatures, most common oil for small engines
  • SAE 10W-30- Varying temperature range, this grade of oil improves cold weather starting, but may increase oil consumption
  • Synthetic SAE 5W-30- Best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption
  • SAE 5W-30- Very cold temperatures
  • Vanguard 15W-50- Varying temperature range. For continuous-use, such as commercial lawn cutting or pressure washing

When choosing lawn mower oil, use a high quality detergent oil classified as 'For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ' or higher. Do not use special additives.

Synthetic oils are an acceptable oil at all temperatures. Use of synthetic oil does not alter required oil change intervals.

User questions & answers

Question: The temps in north Alabama are rarely below 32 and usually only a few hours at a time. Is 5w-30 ok for that temp range
Answer: The manual says 10w30 would be OK for an area that rarely sees 32F
Question: Can i use the pennzoil or the mobil super 5w-30 synthetic motor oil in my generac generator or must i use the generic brand motor oil
Answer: I have always used the Generac brand, but I see no reason why you couldn't use another quality brand so long as it is a 5W-30 Motor Oil.
Question: Is this oil ok for a 1 liter Generac propane engine
Answer: I think so. We have natural gas. I would think the oil should be the same.
Question: Is this the right oil for my Generac 10KW standby gas powered generator
Answer: Not sure if everyone is looking at their manual or just making stuff up... I own a 10kW Generac and manual calls for the following: 5W-30 for 10F and below // 10W-30 for between -10F and 40F // SAE30 for above 32F. Keep in mind that different kW rated Generacs sometimes use different engines that have their own unique oil/spark plug/air filter/etc. requirements.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this oil meet VW's 502.00 / 505.00 spec
Answer: It's likely not going to be on the VW certified list. But, 502/505.00 does mirror ACEA A3/B4 a lot. In the older manuals, pre-longitudinal 1.8T oil sludge, the manual did give you options, saying it needed to meet 502.00/505.00, ACEA A3/B4, or API CF-4 (older TDI's).
Question: Does anyone have a virgin oil analysis to post? thank you
Answer: I hear that if you take the oil to confession, it can be re-virginated. That's what my wife told me right before we got married.
Question: Amazon doesn't make anything. So who really makes this oil
Answer: Warren makes Kirkland oil as well. When I went today, Costco was selling a box containing 2 of the 5 gallon jugs of full synthetic for $24.99, which is about half of what Bezos is charging for the exact same product. The Costco jugs say, "Manufactured by Warren Distribution, Inc." and says "DEXOS approved Gen-2" as well.
Question: Do you just add it to the gas or pour in the glovebox
Answer: Before adding oil to your gas tank make sure to check the blinker fuild level. If it's at the full mark you can safely add all 5 quarts of oil into your gas tank. With full synthetic you'll get better gas mileage! If you want to really crank up your engines preformance, the next time your at the gas station, pop the hood, unscrew the engine oil cap, and fill your engine up with 93 OCT until it overflows. Put the cap back on and your good to go! I've gained around 100HP in my 1996 Ford Taurus.
