14 best engine oil additives
Engine oil additives are chemical substances that can be mixed with engine oil to enhance its performance and provide additional benefits to the engine. These additives are designed to improve various aspects of engine oil and engine operation. Here are some key points about engine oil additives:
Viscosity Improvers: Viscosity is the thickness or resistance to flow of engine oil. Viscosity improvers are additives that help maintain the oil's viscosity across a range of temperatures. This is crucial for ensuring proper lubrication in both cold and hot conditions.
Detergents and Dispersants: Engine oil additives often contain detergents and dispersants that help clean the engine by removing sludge, carbon deposits, and contaminants. They prevent these particles from settling in the engine, keeping it clean and functioning optimally.
Anti-Wear Agents: Anti-wear additives form a protective film on engine components, such as pistons and camshafts, reducing friction and wear. This prolongs the life of engine parts and ensures smoother operation.
Friction Modifiers: Friction modifiers are additives that reduce friction between moving engine parts. This can lead to improved fuel efficiency and reduced wear on engine components.
Anti-Oxidants: Anti-oxidants help prevent the oil from oxidizing and breaking down when exposed to high temperatures and oxygen. They extend the oil's lifespan and maintain its performance.
Seal Conditioners: These additives help rejuvenate and maintain engine seals, preventing leaks and maintaining proper compression.
Rust and Corrosion Inhibitors: Rust and corrosion inhibitors protect engine components from rusting or corroding, particularly in humid or corrosive environments.
Fuel System Cleaners: Some engine oil additives also include fuel system cleaners that help remove deposits from fuel injectors and the combustion chamber, improving fuel system efficiency.
Cooling Properties: Certain additives can improve the engine oil's heat transfer properties, aiding in cooling the engine.
Oil Stabilizers: Oil stabilizers are designed to improve the stability and performance of engine oil, especially in high-stress or high-temperature conditions.
Oil Additive Compatibility: When using engine oil additives, it's essential to ensure they are compatible with your vehicle's engine and the type of oil you are using. Some additives are formulated for specific oil types or engine designs.
Use with Caution: While engine oil additives can provide benefits, it's important to use them in moderation and according to the manufacturer's instructions. Excessive use or misuse of additives can lead to engine damage or reduced performance.
Regular Oil Changes: Engine oil additives should not replace regular oil changes with high-quality engine oil. Regular oil changes remain the foundation of proper engine maintenance.
In summary, engine oil additives are chemical compounds that can be added to engine oil to enhance its performance, cleanliness, and longevity. They are designed to improve various aspects of engine operation, including lubrication, cleaning, and protection. When used correctly and in moderation, they can complement regular oil changes and help maintain a healthy engine.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this anti-friction in my vw gti 2.0 fsi engine |
Answer: | Just an FYI the VW FSI engine is noisy because it’s early Dorect injection technology. The noise from that engine is mostly from loud injectors and hpfp fuel pump. Also the n80 valve can make a ticking noise as well. This product will help in terms of lubrication but if you’re hopes are to make it less noisy then it won’t do much |
Question: | Do you have to make room for this when changing oil or you can add it to a full tank of oil |
Answer: | If your following how much quarts your manual says your fine. On my rav4 I added 1 can of this and 1 can of ceratec, my oil level did not change much. I also did the same thing on my Challenger 5.7 but instead I did about 1 can and plus half of another can. Your fine as long as you follow your engine capacity. |
Question: | do u use this every oil change or like every 25- 30,000 miles like the other liqui moly oil treatment |
Answer: | I change my engine oil every 10,000 km or 6,250 miles with Liqui Moly engine oil and use the Anti friction Oil treatment every time and every 2nd oil change I also use Ceratec. My Audi A4 B7 quattro 3.2L V6 has over 300,000 km. I have another A6 Avant with over 275,000 miles or 440,000 km. I always use Liqui Moli otherwise I will use Revenol Syn oil. |
Question: | What is this compared to Restore engine treatment |
Answer: | it is much better. Graphite is not near as dense or strong as molybdenum. It also can resist higher temps and last longer on the engine before replacement (about 12,000 miles). Prius owners are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to use this as their engines come with moly coat on the cylinders already to deal with start stop technology (which reduces the oil layer between engine parts when the engine stops). As far as anti friction and cylinder sealing goes, it would be zddp (doesnt seal, just reduced friction), graphites (seals and reduces friction, weak), moly (does the same much better), HBN (hexagonal boron nitrate, which is way better than moly), and tungsten disulphide (better than any of the others for sealing and reducing friction. lasts a long time, withstands extreme temps). graphite, moly, HBN and tungsten disulphide are in whats called the graphene family. They do restore damage and reduce friction. They are all apart of the same molecular family. Restore, this product, ceracote, and any product labeled ws2 (tungsten disulfide) will all do the same things, but with different effectiveness. Just look up graphenes online to see how they work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this safe in a 1998 saturn sl1 sohc |
Answer: | This product is intended for 'older' engine that required the "zinc" additive. Your Saturn would be better off with the newer Synthetic oils, If you have high mileage on the car, get the "higher Mileage" oil. You would gain nothing in adding this to your engine. |
Question: | Can you use this in atv engines |
Answer: | Yes..... It is compatible with all motor oils..... and engines..... Use an appropriate amount... Smaller engines of course wouldn't need the entire bottle at once. |
Question: | Can you use it with syntetic oil |
Answer: | Yes, Rislone is compatible with and works with all petroleum-based motor oils including conventional, high mileage and synthetic formulas.Eric |
Question: | is this good for modern cars? whats zddp for |
Answer: | While this is an excellent product for older engines....it is not necessary for newer cars. I use it on all my older classic cars....up to about 2004. The ZDDP is basically a zinc additive that the petroleum industry was mandated to remove from newer oils...unfortunately zinc was required for older engines as it keeps the lifters and camshaft in the older engines from destroying themselves. The design of the newer camshaft and lifters along with the new additives used in the newer oils, gives your engine and components all the protection they need. If you are worried about engine protection buy a good quality synthetic oil like Mobil 1. It is far superior to any conventional motor oil and additives that you can buy. But if you drive or maintain an older vehicle (2004 or older) or have any off road engines, (ATV's, etc.) I would highly recommend this products use with the conventional oils available, (as they do not contain any zinc additives). |

How does Rislone Engine Oil Supplement with Zinc (ZDDP) Treatment work?
Zinc Treatment cools and lubricates the moving parts in your engine better then oil alone. The clinging properties hold the oil to metal parts preventing wear and dry starts. Special additives also prevent oil thinning at high temperatures where normal oil fails. The ZDDP creates the sacrificial layer on components where metal to metal contact happens preventing the metal itself from being worn.
What is ZDDP?
ZDDP, also called ZDP, is short for zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, is basically a combination of zinc and phosphorus. When put under pressure, like between a flat tappet camshaft and a lifter, it attaches to the metal surface and becomes a sacrificial wear material. Beyond being an anti-wear additive, it also is a corrosion inhibitor.
The Rislone Experience
Rislone, one of the original automotive chemical additives, was introduced to the world back in 1921. Over the years, our company rose to international popularity, becoming a go-to for many famous users, such as the U.S. Navy, not to mention professional race teams of almost every stripe. We have continued to evolve alongside the industry’s automotive technological changes in order to provide our customers with performance products for your vehicles.

Answer: | Yes but not a lot older Honda’s manual transmission run engine old don’t put transmission oil it it people don’t know what they are talking about given you answers back |
Question: | How do you use this product |
Answer: | I use it in place of one quart of oil at oil change. I use this on all of my non-synthetic oil vehicles, and the synthetic Lucas in my cars (Cadillacs) that use synthetic oil. I am a drag racer and I use it with race oil in all engines I own. Once you see the insides of one of your high-mileage or severe condition engines that has been using Lucas additive, you'll be a believer like me. I use Lucas break-in additive in all new engines. That's how strongly I feel about Lucas products. |
Question: | I have a toyota corolla. i just got the oil changed so i don't want to drain it. how much should i add to the oil |
Answer: | I would add half....then wait 1500 and add the other half....you can top off with it. I prefer to use it in the summer because today's manufacturers recommend such thin oils such as 0W-20.... |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this be compatible with a ford 1.5 eco boost (turbo) motor in a 2016 fusion? will adding this void the warranty |
Answer: | I use this additive with the oil change on my FORD EXPEDITION using MOBIL 1 Synthetic oil. It will not void the warranty as long as you don't mention that you used it .It is a very expensive process using a mass spectrometer and a atomic absorption analyzer to prove that an additive was used . Us it .I have found dramatic improvements in engine performance. |
Question: | I already used one can but my audi S5 3l takes 6.2l of engine oil. I ordered another can, should I pour it all in? Are there any issues with overfill |
Answer: | Think about what you're saying. If one can is designed and tested to work with 5 liters, 2 cans would work properly with 10 liters. You do not have 10 liters of oil which means you will have too much additive in the system. Even the best additive in the world, is still an additive. Not enough additive is better than not enough oil in the mix. Also this stuff lasts for 30,000 miles. So save your new can, do a few oil changes, add the new can with oil a couple changes down the road. |
Question: | How long should you leave it in your oil before changing the oil |
Answer: | Sorry for the delay. Cera Tec is going to work in the friction system for 30.000 miles . But you are going to change the oil as always you do. Before use Cera Tec,use a Liqui Moly Valve Clean in one full fuel tank, then change the oil and after use Cera Tec. |
Question: | Is this a product that has to be used at every oil change? How does it perform with Mobil 1 EP |
Answer: | I use only mobil 1 products. I use this in two deisel engines one dodge one Mercedes, and gasoline Ferrari 360. No issues at all make them all run quieter and smoother. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would a gallon-container of psl15000 remain effective if stored and used bit-by-bit over the course of umpteen years |
Answer: | The prolong super L is designed to be added to the engine oil and remain effective until the next oil change; then discarded of course with the old oil; having fulfilled its purpose. It would seem prudent to use as directed. |
Question: | Can this be used in a air compressor |
Answer: | Funny you should ask this. I put a small amount in my small compressor sometime ago and have had no problems.( I work with plastics). I have used Prolong oil and transmission products for many , many years and swear that the product is and does EXACTLY as stated. I have given these products to friends and family for gifts. I always tell them when they have the oil or transmission fluids changed. NOT to give the Prolong to the mechanic unless they are trusted. Put the product in YOURSELF!. I always do this myself. I drive a 1996 Ford Explorer 4x4 with now 235k miles. Still has plenty of power for a 6 cyl. I'm sure the compressor would love a SMALL amount . |
Question: | It is safe to use in a Scion Tc |
Answer: | Safe for any oil lubricated engine, I watched an engine with it in it. Drained of oil while running and 2 hours later it was still running. |
Question: | Is it can also be used in diesel engine |
Answer: | I have been using it in my 7.3 diesel engine since it had 30,000 miles. I now have about 500,000 miles on my truck. I think it works great! |

User questions & answers
Question: | It's good to put it before fill up or after |
Answer: | Dump it in at the pump before filling up. That way the fuel rushing into the tank will mix it in rather than dumping it in after filling. Eventually it'll attain uniform mixture but dump then pump will mix it right away. |
Question: | I can run Sea Foam in the crankcase along with my oil at all times or just as a cleaner prior to changing the oil |
Answer: | It says right on the bottle, you can add it in the crankcase 100-300 miles right BEFORE oil change. |
Question: | how does it do in motor oil |
Answer: | I just used Sea Foam in my oil for the first time. I have a 50 year old car with its original, never-rebuilt motor. The lifters have been tapping for awhile so I thought it was worth a try. I added Sea Foam to the crankcase oil according to the directions (1.5 oz. per quart of oil). I let the motor run for about 15 minutes. The lifter noise went away almost immediately. Afterwards, I changed the oil as normal. When I drained the old oil, it was noticeably thinner due to the presence of the Sea Foam. I added new oil and filter, and the engine runs like a top now. No more noise. This stuff is great. |
Question: | This item (Sea Foam Motor Tune-Up) oil additives? Or fuel additives |
Answer: | seafoam is mainly a fuel system cleaner and it does work well. as for your oil, it acts as a cleaner also, targeting sticky valves, dirty port holes , dirty lifter issues etc |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i add this stuff for my 2002 ford expedition xlt 4.6l |
Answer: | This product should work for any machinery that has a lubricating system. It is recommended for engines that have at least 40K miles on it under normal operating conditions. Just be sure you use the appropriate sized container for your engine, whether 4, 6, or 8 cylinder. |
Question: | Can i add this to my existing oil |
Answer: | of course...but it's best to add it to a new (clean) oil change |
Question: | Can I put in a dirtbike |
Answer: | NO!!! If you have a WET CLUTCH (Clutch/Gear box that shares engine oil) it will RUIN your clutch!!!!! |
Question: | Will this eliminate the blue smoke out of my vehicle |
Answer: | Blue smoke indicates oil burning. The question is how is the oil getting into the combustion chamber. Most times it's due to valve seals, but it could also be due to worn cylinder walls, bad rings or a head gasket failure. 1. Valve seals problem solution. Replace the valve seals - could be an expensive fix. Or try some chemical to swell the seals, but it's not a permanent fix. 2. Worn cylinder walls solution. This could work, as long as the wear isn't too bad. Restore will fill in some of the scratches in the cylinder and reduce the blue smoke - maybe even eliminate it. 3. Bad rings solution. Try running some engine cleaner through the fuel - Seafoam is a good one to try. If the rings are sticking, you may get lucky and it could clear up the problem. 4. Head gasket solution. If there's no white smoke coming out, then only oil is leaking past the head gasket. The only fix is to replace the head gasket, which is costly. I hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a 4.3 liter volvo penta i/o boat engine that has a small leak. i use 20w-40 oil. can i use this in a boat engine runs up to 4500 rpms |
Answer: | you of course can use it, but will it fix your leak no, it will slow it down but will not stop it. lucas oil products are nothing more than super thick oil kinda of like pouring very thick gear oil into your engine. you are using a very thin oil, i would think because of high rpms & heat your oil needs to move fast & freely to keep all parts lubed. talk to a penta dealer but i'm guessing they will tell to fix the leak correctly with a new gasket or replacement part to cure the leak |
Question: | Can i use both this and the lucas oil stabilizer at the same time |
Answer: | I pulled this info from the vendor.Use Lucas Oil Stabilizer in gear oil to stop leaks, reduce operating temperatures and increase the life of the gear oil. Since it is pure petroleum, it can safely blend with all other automotive lubricants, even synthetics, ATF and mineral oil. It keeps old engines alive and new engines new. |
Question: | questions: Does this need to be added every oil change like other products? Is it really thick like Motor Honey? Thanks |
Answer: | No, you don't need to replace it on every oil change. This additive mixes with your motor oil and coats the inside of the engine as well as the seals (where usually the leaks comes from). As I've mentioned before don't overfill this two mixture (your motor oil & Lucas Stop Leak) beyond your engine's capacity. Once you've drained your old oil and replaced the drain plug & new oil filter on your vehicle carefully add the Stop Leak then the additional motor oil, checking on the dip stick every now and then while adding them, so as not you won't overfill the engine.'Motor Honey', I haven't come across this product. Is this just a figure of speech? |
Question: | how do I use lucas oil stop leak |
Answer: | When you change your oil put the stop leak Quart in in place of 1 of the Quarts of oil, then drive regular till next oil change.Unless your leak is extreme Lucas will stop the leak. I've used all the Lucas products for years in my cars and my 18 wheeler before i retired. Now i still use it in my personal vehicles. Love that Lucas! |

User questions & answers
Question: | To everyone who has used this oil did yoh buy the sae 30w or the 20/50 breakin oil |
Answer: | I ordered SAE 30 and received 20w-50 |
Question: | is this non-detergent oil ? better for seating piston rings |
Answer: | Yes... this is a high-zinc break-in oil. Used for helping to seat the rings on an old school, flat-tappet engine. If you're running a full roller lifter set up, this may be a bit of preventative overkill, but it's cheap insurance. I run it for 500 miles then change to a oil designed for older hot rods (i.e.: contains zinc). Lucas also makes an excellent "Hot Rod & Classic" oil in 10w30 and 10w40 once you've broken things in. Note that these oils are NOT for modern engines and/or cars with catalytic-equipped emissions controls. |
Question: | How long do you run this oil |
Answer: | Called Lucus oil, they said for my Jeep L 4, at first start keep the RPMs up at med high for 5 minutes and don’t let up. Then run Jeep normally for 800 miles then change oil . |
Question: | Will this work for a Diesel engine |
Answer: | 40w is more common for diesel engines. |

Frequently Asked Questions:
Rislone Engine Treatment Concentrate starts working the minute you install and start driving the vehicle to help remove harmful gum, sludge, and deposits from your engine.
How does Rislone Engine Treatment Concentrate work?
Rislone Engine Treatment Concentrate gradually dissolves and removes harmful deposits of varnish, sludge and gum from the internal metal parts without plugging oil passages. These deposits form within engines and can alter tolerances, stick valves and rings, cause noisy valves and lifters, and plug oil screens and passages. Regular use of Rislone Engine Treatment, with oil and filter changes at the proper intervals, will keep such deposits to a minimum.
How much Rislone Engine Treatment Concentrate do I install?
One bottle of 4102 Rislone Engine Treatment Concentrate 16.9 oz. is designed to treat 4 to 6 quarts of oil. For larger systems, stationary engines and diesel trucks, use 1 bottle for every 5 quarts of oil capacity. For severely dirty engines, use 2 bottles (double dosage) of Rislone Engine Treatment Concentrate and change the oil and filter after 100 miles of driving.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this on a motorcycle with a wet clutch |
Answer: | Yes you can use it in motorcycle it will not affect wet clutch. You will need about half of this syringe ~ 10 ml or get Small engine edition which is smaller volume sized for motorcycle and easier to apply to the smaller oil filler hole in motorcycles. |
Question: | Some people say this is snake oil, others say this helped their engine/gas mileage, which is it? Thanks |
Answer: | I do not think it is snake oil. I bought it because I need it to help in the engine performance and engine compression and it did. I did not pay attention to my gas mileage. |
Question: | how often does this need to be added |
Answer: | Every 40,000 Miles Put it in right after your next oil change. It bonds to engine parts and survives next oil changes up to 40k. It reduced my engine noise in my 1990 Landcruiser with 220k Miles |
Question: | Give me one good reason to pay this price when I can get a bottle of seafoam and obtain the same results for 1/5 the price |
Answer: | TriboTEX and Seafoam are different types treatments. Seafoam is aimed at cleaning carbon deposits off your engine and is mostly alcohol. TriboTEX builds a protective and wear reversing diamond-like carbon coating on the moving parts in your engine, extending its life and improving its performance. The synthetic nanomaterial in TriboTEX was designed and tested with grants from the National Science Foundation and NASA. It is a highly complex technology and the only thing of its kind on the market. Using TriboTEX can also pay for itself in the potential fuel savings you will see over 40,000 miles of driving, which is our recommended treatment interval. |
Product features
Smart nanotechnology that treats engine wear only at the source.
Before treatment this typical piston ring (see photo), a major component to the correct function of an engine, is scratched and damaged (see arrow) from 120,000 miles of highway driving. The wear and damage reversing affects of the TriboTEX DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating are evident after the treatment. We recommend treating with TriboTEX every 40,000 miles.
Proudly made and engineered in the USA.
“Lubricants (engine oil) are a mixture of a base oil and additives. The toxicity of lubricants comes from some additives. So developing a new generation of additives that are safe for the environment was the primary objective of my PhD research. While testing countless materials, I found an outlier: a material that was so unique it had to be synthesized. This material is unlike any other, because it uses millions of tiny particles that form together to create a high performance (diamond-like carbon) coating. Its behavior was beautiful and environmentally safe. That is how we created TriboTEX.”
-Dr. P. Rudenko (Material Scientist)
Easy to use engine boost.
Add TriboTEX to your engine oil. It may be added to a warmed-up or cold engine, and is easiest to add during an oil change. The smart ceramic coating forms as you drive. Please allow at least 500 miles of normal driving to notice the full benefits of TriboTEX, but do not worry, these miles do not have to be driven all at once. Our specialists recommend treating your engine every 40,000 miles. Always check your oil level and change it regularly.
You can treat any engine.
This product is compatible with all types of motor oil both conventional and synthetic and can be used in gas or diesel engines. TriboTEX treats all vehicles i.e. Ford F150, Toyota Camry, BMW 3 series, Dodge pickups and Chevy V8s. For motorcycles, lawn mowers and other small equipment use our small engine treatment. For engines that hold more than 8 quarts/Liters of oil, such as large diesel pickup trucks and some high performance sports cars, please use our diesel treatment. The diesel treatment is a more powerful dose for bigger engines.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it stop cold start bearing noise |
Answer: | Hi, and Yes it does. Due to the Nano lube that stays in the pores of the metal, the lubricant is always there to protect those parts at cold start ups. |
Question: | When is the best time to add? Before or after an oil change or any |
Answer: | It's always best to add with a fresh oil change. However, as long as you have about 1/2 of the life left on your current, you can add the New 12 oz bottle now. |
Question: | too many seals broken on customers bottles |
Answer: | The broken/added seal is a problem we had about 3 years ago. It was a production issue one time. The new black bottles are not part of that older problem. Thank you for the question. |
Question: | Why was product 16 oz reduced to 12 oz |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. The new product is more concentrated and treats even more oil than the older version. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Whats better this or the lucas oil stabilizer |
Answer: | From my experience, the stop leak in this product can cause oil to turn to a gel inside the engine, so inherently the lucas oil stabilizer would be better. STP oil treatment contains ZDDP, which is an anti-wear additive that is missing from newer oils and essential for non-roller cam engines. The lucas product documentation claims it is 100% petroleum, so I would not expect any additives like that. I would recommend the standard blue container STP oil treatment, that does not contain stop leak, due to its additional anti-wear additive. Other than that, they both indicate they work by increasing the viscosity rating of your oil. |
Question: | Can I put this in my engine with marvel mystery oil my truck only takes 5qt of 5w |
Answer: | Yes, but you should read the percentages of what you are adding as to not dilute the motor oil too much. Marvel should be like 1 oz per quart, adding STP is the same as almost 1/2 quart. |
Question: | The product oil stop like its work for Mercedes stop smoking |
Answer: | It will not stop smoking, but will help seal oil leaks and reduce oil consumption. |
Question: | Can this product be used with a car that uses synthetic oil |
Answer: | Yes it can |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many quarts does this treat |
Answer: | I used two bottles when breaking in a marine engine with 8 qts capacity. |
Question: | What are the zinc and phosphorus concentration rates? Are there any dilution charts |
Answer: | Lucas Product# 10063 is a zinc additive for engine oil. Its designed for engines with no catalytic converter in the exhaust (pre-1977 cars/trucks) and race engines. This product is also used as an engine "break-in" additive for newly built engines. For non-race applications, one bottle will usually treat two oil changes. Some race-engine applications require the entire bottle. Classic cars (depending on oil capacity) require approximately 2,100 PPM (Parts Per Million) zinc in the oil. Phosphorus levels are not published for this product. Coupon Available. Voted Top in service, warranty and support. Thank you for your interest. FamilyGoKarts 800-950-2210 |
Question: | How much do you add |
Answer: | 16 ounce bottle each oil change to protect your engine. However much engine oil you normally add during and oil change, make sure you substract 16 ounces. Then add TB Zinc Plus. |
Question: | how man oz should i use per quart |
Answer: | 1 bottle with standard crank case capacity (4-6) quarts. Pour in bottle first, then add oil to full mark. |
