12 best conventional motor oils

Conventional motor oil, also known as conventional or mineral oil, is a type of lubricating oil commonly used in internal combustion engines, including those found in automobiles and other vehicles. Here are the key points about conventional motor oil:

  1. Composition: Conventional motor oil is derived from crude oil through a refining process. It is made up of hydrocarbon molecules and may contain some impurities.

  2. Viscosity: Viscosity is a crucial property of motor oil, indicating its thickness or resistance to flow. Conventional motor oils are available in various viscosity grades, such as 10W-30 or 5W-20, where the first number (e.g., 10W or 5W) represents the oil's flow characteristics at low temperatures (W stands for "winter"), and the second number (e.g., 30 or 20) represents its viscosity at high temperatures. Different grades are suitable for different operating conditions and engine types.

  3. Lubrication: The primary function of motor oil is to lubricate the moving parts within an engine. It forms a protective film between metal surfaces to reduce friction and wear, ensuring smooth engine operation.

  4. Heat Dissipation: Conventional motor oils also help dissipate heat generated by the engine, preventing overheating and maintaining optimal operating temperatures.

  5. Cleaning: Motor oil plays a role in cleaning the engine by trapping and suspending contaminants and combustion by-products, preventing them from causing damage or deposits on engine components.

  6. Sealing: Motor oil helps create a seal between the piston rings and cylinder walls, preventing the loss of combustion gases and maintaining compression.

  7. Compatibility: Conventional motor oil is generally compatible with a wide range of engines, making it a versatile choice for many vehicles, including older models.

  8. Oil Change Intervals: Conventional motor oil typically requires more frequent oil changes compared to synthetic motor oils. Oil change intervals are typically recommended every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but it's essential to consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific recommendations.

  9. Cost: Conventional motor oil is often less expensive than synthetic motor oils, making it a cost-effective choice for budget-conscious vehicle owners.

  10. Environmental Impact: The production and disposal of conventional motor oil can have environmental consequences due to its petroleum-based nature. Proper disposal methods, such as recycling, should be followed to minimize environmental harm.

It's important to note that while conventional motor oil is suitable for many vehicles, some modern engines, especially high-performance and newer models, may benefit from synthetic or synthetic-blend oils, which offer enhanced performance and longer change intervals. Vehicle manufacturers often specify the recommended oil type and change intervals in the owner's manual, so it's advisable to follow these guidelines for optimal engine performance and longevity.

User questions & answers

Question: synthetic or conventional
Answer: This is a full synthetic in its current form. Previous incarnations were a blend.
Question: What is the shell life of motor oil
Answer: If kept in a cool (68-71 degrees, dry environment and away from sunlight I wouldn't worry about it, unless I intended to keep it 3 years plus.
Question: Is this full synthetic or synthetic blend? It's listed under both categories in your homepage
Answer: THIS PRODUCT IN 5W-20 IS A SYNTHETIC BLEND. CALLED CASTROL 12/12/19. THEY NO LONGER MAKE CONVENTIONAL FORMULA FOR THIS WEIGHT. ANY QUESTIONS, CALL 888-227-8765.
Question: how long time that oil last for chevrolet cobalt lt 2009 has 130.000 miles
Answer: I have a 2009 Cobalt. I change my oil when the indicator comes up on the dash. Usually within the time frame of 5 -1 % of life left. My Cobalt has almost 200,000 miles on it. The computer actually knows when the oil needs changed. How? The computer calculates the length of time the car runs, temperatures the car is exposed and more. In effect, the computer knows when the oil is losing it's level of viscosity. Viscosity = Sticky. Oil needs to be sticky to cling to the internal parts of the engine. Again, oil must be sticky to be protect the engine. Trust me, the car's computer knows. The only way the car doesn't know is if you don't start it and or you don't drive it. In that case, you would need to change the oil far more often. The worst effect any engine deals with is not being run. Second worst is starting the car and not allowing the engine to reach normal operating temperatures. Start the car and drive it. Doing so causes the moisture in the oil to be burned off. Moisture in the crankcase causes internal rust. Internal rust can damage the crank bearings. I have 4 GM cars. They all have high mileage. Let the car tell you when to change the oil. Btw, I use this oil in all my cars. It's among the best.

User questions & answers

Question: why bosh filters
Answer: Castrol does not recommend a particular oil filter brand. Our recommendation would be to use a filter from a leading manufacturer consistent with the recommendation of the engine manufacturer for your vehicle. Change the filter with each oil change following the oil change interval recommendation of the engine manufacturer consistent with the type of driving you do (e.g. severe vs. normal).
Question: Doe's anyone know why this oil is so expensive
Answer: It's good oil. It lasts longer and works better. In my area it is cheaper to buy on Amazon than from the local store. So there's that too.
Question: Generally i use highmileage 5w-30 for my nissan sentra 2007 which has 200k miles, shall i use highmileage 10w-40 now
Answer: Look what Nissan says on weight to use and stick with it. It is designed to use the weight as for the clearances on you motor. Once you used the high mileage continue to use it. The high mileage has stuff in the oil to expand some of the seal and gaskets in your motor. Now if you go back the seals may shrink back and start to leak. Go to youtube and look for the video on different filters and oils. ie fram. I had a someone tell me to get the fram off my 92 ford 5.0 mustang and watching the video on filter I could see why. Oil is important but especially the filter.
Question: quisiera saber si es 10w30 o 10w40, la descripcion es diferente a la imagen
Answer: El producto en cuestión es el Castrol GTX High Mileage 10W-40.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this oil meet VW's 502.00 / 505.00 spec
Answer: It's likely not going to be on the VW certified list. But, 502/505.00 does mirror ACEA A3/B4 a lot. In the older manuals, pre-longitudinal 1.8T oil sludge, the manual did give you options, saying it needed to meet 502.00/505.00, ACEA A3/B4, or API CF-4 (older TDI's).
Question: Does anyone have a virgin oil analysis to post? thank you
Answer: I hear that if you take the oil to confession, it can be re-virginated. That's what my wife told me right before we got married.
Question: Amazon doesn't make anything. So who really makes this oil
Answer: Warren makes Kirkland oil as well. When I went today, Costco was selling a box containing 2 of the 5 gallon jugs of full synthetic for $24.99, which is about half of what Bezos is charging for the exact same product. The Costco jugs say, "Manufactured by Warren Distribution, Inc." and says "DEXOS approved Gen-2" as well.
Question: Do you just add it to the gas or pour in the glovebox
Answer: Before adding oil to your gas tank make sure to check the blinker fuild level. If it's at the full mark you can safely add all 5 quarts of oil into your gas tank. With full synthetic you'll get better gas mileage! If you want to really crank up your engines preformance, the next time your at the gas station, pop the hood, unscrew the engine oil cap, and fill your engine up with 93 OCT until it overflows. Put the cap back on and your good to go! I've gained around 100HP in my 1996 Ford Taurus.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this oil handle high temperature
Answer: I don't know what you feel high temperature means. I have used it in an engine that ran as high as 100C without loss of performance.
Question: Can I use it for a toyota corolla
Answer: I've only used this in my 2010 Corolla s
Question: so whats the differrence or benefit of this over the other castrols
Answer: It was the least expensive 0w/20 good quality oil I could find at the time. Good good reviews, so I got it.Not sure if it's any "better" than any other good oil. You might find more answers at that website that talks about engine oil...........I think it's "Bob is the oil guy" ..........or something like that.
Question: Is this a synthetic, conventional or blend, base oil product
Answer: Not truly. It is a group 3 "synthetic" that uses conventional oil and refines it (via processes like hydrocracking) and in the US can be called synthetic but like most synthetics which are group 3 could not be called synthetic in many other countries like Germany for example. Those oils need to be group 4 which use P.A.O. basestocks or group 5 which use Ester basestocks. By the way since this oil is mainly concerning itself with oil sticking to metal Ester basestocks are naturally excellent at adhering to metal surfaces. There are differences between group 4 and 5 oils. A major one is that Esters are hygroscopic (absorb water) while P.A.O. are hydrophobic (do not absorb water) in practical terms it could relate to seal swell. True synthetics have very consistent molecule structure an as such do not need V.I. additives to try to stabilize viscosity over time. True synthetics maintain that on their own. As should be obvious by now there is no simple answer to what is "best". I use group 3 synthetics in my street muscle cars. Companies have rebates multiple times a year for months. I take advantage of those. If the oil is not as cheap on Amazon the big W store has low prices. Right now one can buy Pennzoil Platinum Ultra (their best) for $20/5quart jug. The rebate is $10. A good price. Mobil 1 E.P. is $25 and a E.P. filter $9. The rebate for just the oil is $12. The rebate for oil and filter is $17. Another good deal. For my supersport motorcycles I use motorcycle specific Group 5 oils usually such as Motul 7100 (made in France). I urge everyone to learn about oils and be comfortable in their selections. Follow your vehicles manufacturers recommendations. If you read the fine print on any oil they pretty much make their claims then add to follow your manufacturers recommendations in oil specs and change intervals. We had a motor oil discussion here that went on over 4 years. The Bobstheoilguy site is still up and joining that is a great idea IMO

User questions & answers

Question: How old is this oil ? Why is it so much cheaper than normal
Answer: Racing is trying to be outlawed and this oil is good for racing and non emissions vehicles like i have. No new cars use it....
Question: its not allowing shipment to california. Is there a reason for this
Answer: Walnart. Cheaper too $6.78 a bottle 10w30 :-)
Question: Might be a dumb question but is this oil synthetic? I don't see anything on it that says it is
Answer: This oil is organic. The Valvoline 20W50 synthetic oil has a black label, and it clearly states "synthetic" on the label. I use the synthetic in my 1952 MG TD because the oil has high zinc content that is a must for older engines.
Question: Is this a full synthetic ? I notice they sell a black container also
Answer: The silver container is conventional oil and has about 1400 ppm ZDDP. The black container is full synthetic and has about 1200 ppm ZDDP. Both of these oils have exceptional shear/anti wear properties, but the high phosphorus content will foul catalytic converters over time.

Product description

Pennzoil High Mileage SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil is engineered for cars that have accumulated more than 75,000 miles, particularly those that are experiencing oil leaks and oil burn off. Engines with higher mileage tend to experience more wear than new engines. As your car ages, leaks may develop and cause higher oil consumption and oil burn off which is why your engine might be needing frequent top-offs. Severe oil consumption and oil burn off may also cause other issues, leaving deposits on the internal parts of your engine. Pennzoil High Mileage 5W-30 motor oil is a synthetic blend oil enhanced with an outstanding combination of special conditioning seal agents and additives to help stop leaks from aging seals and reduce the oil consumption that is typical of older and worn engines. It meets or exceeds the following OEM requirements: FCA MS-6395; Ford WSS-M2C946-B1. It also meets or exceeds the requirements of the following industry specifications: API SP and all previous categories; ILSAC GF-6. For a full list of equipment approvals and recommendations, please consult your local Shell Technical Help Desk and always consult your owner’s manual.
