User questions & answers
Question: | Does this item come with calibration certificate |
Answer: | Nope. Lux and footcandles. Good basic unit but remember you get what you pay for. |
Question: | Can you give me a calibration certificate with this unit |
Answer: | Yes but the color temperature of the source may effect the sensation of “brightness”. The higher the color temperature, the sensation of brightness increases. We have “caveman eyes”: sunlight (6500k) “feels” bright....fire (2000k) “feels” dim. Look up anything published by Dr Sam Berman. |
Question: | What is the lowest fc reading this unit will take? Will it measure as low as 0.02 fc |
Answer: | It has been very good. We have used them for a while now. |
Question: | Currently using a "Testo 540 " Light meter. Doesn't seem to get full fc when reading LED. Will this meter give a better fc for LED light |
Answer: | You will need to purchase the cable that has the data send button on the cable. The on/off button does not send the data. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you check par readings with this |
Answer: | There really is only one way to calibrate a light meter; that’s to check the results with your particular camera. The exposure sensitivity with digital cameras will vary, so any meter’s factory pre-set calibration is usually a little over or under what the camera requires. Since the camera’s sensitivity is inflexible, the meter is designed to be adjustable. Take a few test shots based on the meter’s readings. After evaluating the exposures, you feel that some over or under exposure is needed, you may adjust the meter in 1/10 stop increments to match the camera. With the L-478 press "MENU", then Item #2-"Set Exposure Compensation". Take another round of test images to check if your adjustment is correct; repeat if necessary. Remember that the adjustment is specific to the camera in use; using a different camera may require performing this test again. |
Question: | is there a way to convert Lux readings to photographic EV values |
Answer: | Hi,The L-478D-U is a non radio unit. You can attach many manufacturers triggers via sync cord. The Sekonic L-478DR-U series meters have built-in wireless triggering for Elinchrom (Skyport), Phottix (Strato II, Ares II) and Pocket Wizard.Regards,Will H. |
Question: | Would you consider this an incident meter or does measure more reflective light |
Answer: | You will need the L-478DR-U version. It comes with a built in radio trigger. You will also need a flash with pocket wizard or external pocket wizard attached to flash. |
Question: | Does it work for Photography? Does it tell me the right aperture in F and shuttle speed |
Answer: | No difference really, just a way to tell US radios from others- FCC vs CE designations. The new model designated by "-U" was created to indicate that it operates on US frequencies (the FCC radio frequencies that PWs operate on in the US market). The purpose is to combat grey market product sold from overseas that often is not compatible with PW sold for the US market. Prior to the new model designation, the only way to tell if it was a US model was to look for the FCC or CE markings inside the battery cover, something not readily apparent when shopping on Amazon or eBay. In fact, I bought 2 L478D (sold and shipped by Amazon) over the past 2 years and both were not US FCC models so I had to return them. I bought the U model when it came out and am very happy with it. If you don't use the PW radio function, you won't see any functional differences. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Cca copper clad aluminum or ofc oxygen free copper |
Answer: | If I remember correctly, the first set I used was the restore and then the maintain. |
Question: | Wow, this Metra wire is not shielded at all..? Is it true |
Answer: | Yes it does. First, view the picture - it shows that it does. Next, check the price - the listed price is significantly higher than just the replacement packets themselves ($69 versus $14.95) There is a third option as well - it is one without the humidity monitor -but I can't seem to locate it on the Amazon site. I bought two of the monitors separately and find that I don't use them. |
Question: | would this work for a oversize load beacon light on a semi truck |
Answer: | There should be some small adhesive backed velcro strips included in the package. Good luck with this product. The humidification packets work really well but I had sensors in three of my guitars and I gave up on using the sensors because I had a lot of issues with them communicating with the phone app. Great idea and hopefully the sensor technology has improved since my attempt to use them. Hope this helps & enjoy making music! |
Question: | Can i use this to hook up my alpine amplifier to the factory speakers of my 07 sport trac |
Answer: | About once a week . When the guitar is between 45-55 % humidity you won’t need the sponge in the feedback buster , but leave the buster in the guitar hole to retain the moisture . Check the humidity every week with a hygrometer . |

Question: | I bought this for my 2004 chevy colorado and it does work except it wont turn on or off. I have to do it manually. Any suggestions |
Answer: | Some Googling turns up that Sinometer and Mastech are related companies. It appears that the brand names are somewhat interchangeable, and often meters marked "Mastech" are listed as being from Sinometer. E.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA04E0BA8503. Item title is "Mastech 8268", box and product both say Mastech. Meter works. Probably not worth worrying about. |
Question: | What do I need for my 2009 Chevy Silverado |
Answer: | From what I understand the audible continuity function doesn't turn off when you have it set to check for continuity. |
Question: | So this will work as a wire harness for an aftermarket radio and will allow it to be installed |
Answer: | At 0.543 ohms you are going to be reading the resistance of the meter test leads combined with the resistance of the part under test. hence the need for a expensive 4 wire high accuracy ohm meter. |
Question: | Will this connect an aftermarket head unit in a 2002 Chevy Cavalier? Is there anything else that is needed to to make an aftermarket headunit work |
Answer: | according to the product description towards the top of page the capacitance upper range is 200uf instead of 20uf, I recently measured a new run capacitor rated at 35 +/- .6 and it measured at 36uf |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have 2007 chevy impala with bose system and onstar will this work with this system |
Answer: | It may not be accurate on compost. Depends on the moisture and other factors. We would not recommend it. |
Question: | Attached GMOS-04 to 2002 Oldsmobile bravada and can barely hear the radio or chime adjusted the potentiometer but barely any difference |
Answer: | The white button is used to indicate a percentage of moisture in the soil. Press the white button and hold for about 2 to 3 minutes. The mete will then indicate a percentage of moisture. |
Question: | Does this unit work on 2007 Silverado Classic with on star and Bose |
Answer: | The soil doesn't need to be sopping wet, just moist. And it doesn't matter whether you measure the PH or the moisture first or even if you only check one or the other and not the other. Think of it like whether you put on your left shoe first or your right - not really an issue. |
Question: | does this work on chevy 2005 ssr with bose and retain steering wheel controls |
Answer: | Do it find it to be terribly accurate compared to the soil samples I had tested at Texas A&M. I had soil that came back on the test at 5.1 and the meter read in the 6.5 range. |
Question: | I find the directions a bit sketchy. what settings to use to check a sad light.? i'm getting readings of 573 (x 10) no where near what it should be |
Answer: | You'll have to buy the case separately. we ship 2 separate boxes that has Fluke-87V and I400. |

Answer: | Includes:◦Fluke 87V Industrial Multimeter◦TL-75 Test Leads◦AC175 Alligator Clips◦i400, 400A AC current clamp◦80BK-A DMM Temperature Probe◦9V battery (installed)Cases are sold SeperatlyRegards,[email protected] |
Question: | How low can this meter accurately measure in Ft Candles |
Answer: | Hello, the plug of the test lead, and the size of the copper pillar inside is 4mm. You can use it if the size is appropriate. |
Question: | would this measure uva and uvb light coming in windows? At least direct sunlight |
Answer: | I'm pretty sure these are 36" long leads. There plenty long for my needs and for most any application. Very flexible and very sharp tips on probe ends. Small enough to backprobe some of the small block plugs I work with on major appliances. I would purchase again. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with wiring to install |
Answer: | It comes with 3 or 4. That isn't really a critical issue, though, because the "conditioning pads" are really just extremely fine sandpaper to keep the metal from tarnishing (which would retard the galvanic action that creates the electrical current that provides the reading). We've used the unit a couple of years and I'm still using the first pad. I think you could wipe off the probe with a slightly damp paper towel, if necessary, and then just buff it a little with a scrap from a paper grocery bag or other brown paper. (I use brown paper to buff the finish on some of the furniture I build.) The pH unit is excellent. It's well made and cleverly designed. It is useful to us for controlling the acidity in our blueberry patch. When I pull the unit out of the soil I twist it in the soil to let the soil do some of the polishing of the metal tip. By the way, keep in mind that soil temperature has a direct affect on the pH reading. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is it Bright enough to use without head lights |
Answer: | The HB-2 is a dual-function device that also measures for soil moisture and it's about $50 more expensive. If you just want a reliable, easy-to-use, rugged and accurate tester for acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline soil - something that covers the pH range of soils growing most crops & other plants - the PhD works perfectly. I've not used a HB-2 myself, but I'd assume it's an equally well-made device. Soil moisture is more of a concern to a farmer than a home garderner; which one is better depends on what you need it for. |
