13 best towing brake controllers
Towing brake controllers are essential devices for safe towing, particularly when towing trailers or other heavy loads with a vehicle. These controllers are related to brake controls, trailer accessories, and exterior automotive accessories. Here is some information about towing brake controllers:
Function: Towing brake controllers, also known as trailer brake controllers, are electronic devices that allow the driver to control the brakes of a trailer independently of the tow vehicle. They are installed in the tow vehicle's cabin and are connected to the trailer's braking system.
Types: There are several types of brake controllers, including time-delayed controllers and proportional controllers. Time-delayed controllers apply a preset amount of braking force, while proportional controllers apply the brakes in proportion to the vehicle's deceleration.
Installation: Brake controllers must be installed correctly for safe towing. This typically involves mounting the controller in a convenient location within the driver's reach and connecting it to the vehicle's electrical system. Additionally, the controller needs to be wired to the trailer's brakes.
Adjustability: Many modern brake controllers offer adjustability options to fine-tune the braking force applied to the trailer. This adjustability ensures that the trailer's brakes are synchronized with the towing vehicle's braking system.
Safety: Towing brake controllers are crucial for safety. They help prevent issues like trailer sway and provide smoother, more controlled braking when towing heavy loads. This enhances overall stability and reduces the risk of accidents.
Legal Requirements: In some regions, using a towing brake controller may be a legal requirement when towing trailers over a certain weight limit. It's essential to familiarize yourself with local regulations to ensure compliance.
Trailer Compatibility: When selecting a brake controller, it's important to consider the size and weight of the trailer you plan to tow. Different controllers may be better suited for various trailer sizes and types.
Brands and Models: Various manufacturers offer towing brake controllers, including popular brands like Tekonsha, CURT, and Reese.Researching different models and reading user reviews can help you choose the one that best suits your needs.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of both the brake controller and the trailer's braking system is essential to ensure they function correctly. This includes checking wiring, connections, and the condition of the brakes themselves.
Overall, towing brake controllers are critical accessories for safe towing, allowing drivers to maintain better control and responsiveness when towing heavy trailers or loads. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and best practices for installation and use to ensure a safe towing experience.

The Tekonsha site has a tool that will help you determine what connector you need for your vehicle. Then you can order the connector cable on Amazon. |
Question: | I have a 4 way plug spliced into a 7 way plug that does my lights etc for what will be my brake pin csn i run a live 12 volt feed to plug |
Answer: | When your order it you put in what kind of vehicle you have |
Question: | Is it possible to use in a rental environment, where each user downloads the app for a rental, uses the receiver and then the next user does the same |
Answer: | John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway. |
Question: | For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees |
Answer: | You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller. |

CURT Electrical Trailer Brake Controllers
CURT offers several different trailer brake controller models to provide you with a solution that fits your unique towing setup and budget. We carry time-based and inertia-based or proportional brake controllers.
All CURT trailer brake controllers are designed for easy installation. Most use our quick plug harnesses, and each comes with its own set of features and benefits.
For a helpful guide in selecting a brake controller, see below.
Two types of brake controllers:
CURT electric brake controllers fall into one of two categories: inertia-based or time-based. These refer to the method of activation used by the brake controller. Both types are safe and effective for stopping a trailer. However, depending on your needs, one may be preferred over the other.
Inertia-based
Inertia-based or proportional trailer brake controllers use an electronic mechanism, called an accelerometer, to detect the momentum of the vehicle-trailer combination while braking. The controller accentuates the trailer brakes in proportion to the momentum, allowing for a smooth, highly efficient stop.
Time-based
Time-based activation is less complex than inertia-based. When stopping, a time-based brake controller accentuates the trailer brakes based on whatever gain setting is input by the driver. Although simple in operation, time-based trailer brake controllers are effective and provide a more budget-friendly option.
Heavy-duty towing
If you are towing a heavy trailer or cargo, an inertia-based brake controller will provide superior control to make smoother stops and to put less strain on your vehicle.
Light-duty towing
If you’re towing a simple boat trailer or popup camper, a time-based trailer brake controller may be sufficient. CURT time-based controllers are easily adjustable for varying loads.
Frequent towing
If you’re planning to tow often, an inertia-based brake controller is recommended. The sophisticated operation will help prolong the life of your vehicle and trailer.
Occasional towing
If you only plan to tow a few times a year, such as for family camping trips during the summer, a time-based brake controller is an effective and budget-conscious option.

User questions & answers
Question: | What adapter cable is required for a 2002 Suburban 3.5l 4x |
Answer: | it's not so much an issue of fitting as much as making sure you get the right wiring harness for your truck which is normally sold separate from this unit. So just do a search for your trucks harness. You can even go to the manufacturers website and look up the right harness model number then search for it on Amazon. Great unit you'll love it. |
Question: | I have a 2013 silverado 1500 lt. has factory towing package. do i need an additional harness? how do i found out which one if so |
Answer: | Manufacture states power draw is so low (3.6 milliamps when not in use) that it would take 3-4 months to drain battery if allowed to sit without starting. Then would be the time they would recommend disconnecting unit from vehicle wiring. |
Question: | Does it have a digital read out to tell you what degree it's currently adjusted to |
Answer: | Most electric brakes will not "engage" when driving in reverse. The magnets will still grab, yes, but the camming action that forces the shoes to the drums is reversed and thus should not cause any issues. |
Question: | is this unit "proportional" or "timed |
Answer: | It comes with a pigtail that plugs into back of unit and stranded wires on the other end to hook up to the car. If you have a newer vehicle that is prewired for electric brakes, you can purchase a pigtail to plug into the prewired side plug. My vehicle came with that pigtail in the glove box when I bought it. |

It takes a lot of power to stop a moving trailer, especially when that trailer is hauling a heavy load. On RVs, flatbeds, livestock trailers and many other oversize haulers, manufacturers typically install trailer brakes to assist the tow vehicle in bringing such a massive amount of weight to a halt. But it takes more than a good set of brakes to make quick, efficient stops. It takes precision and the right amount of control. Discovery is a time-based brake controller, meaning it applies increasing brake pressure the longer your foot is on the brake pedal. This pressure is based on the gain setting and sensitivity adjustment set by the user. Discovery has a digital display for easy monitoring and the ability to manage up to four axles at a time. It mounts at any angle, anywhere in your vehicle and comes with an automatic power level adjustment feature to ensure you can stay better focused on your driving and spend less time worry about your trailer brakes. All CURT brake controls are designed to work with quick plugs so that they can readily plug into your vehicle's original equipment socket. They also include a mounting bracket and hardware for easy installation. A brake controller should be mounted somewhere on the dash of your vehicle, and we recommend putting it below the steering wheel, either on the right or left side of the steering column.

Spectrum Electric Trailer Brake Controller
The CURT Spectrum trailer brake controller provides powerful brake operation at your fingertips, featuring a simple, dash-integrated knob with a separate computer module.
The knob has 10 tri-color LEDs and a rotary, push-button to control and monitor all trailer brake activity.
The separate computer module can be mounted out of sight, providing smooth, responsive braking and promoting a true factory look and feel on the dash of your vehicle.
Simple, rotary knob
All trailer brake settings and conditions are communicated through the simple but powerful rotary knob of the Spectrum trailer brake controller. It provides highly responsive operation without cluttering up the look of your vehicle’s dash.
Ramp-up LED display
The Spectrum brake controller displays all settings, preferences and operations through 10 tri-color LED lights. Encircling the knob control, the lights flash, ramp up and change color based on the various braking conditions and user input.
Two mounting options
The rotary knob can be mounted onto the dash for a completely integrated look with the vehicle’s other controls. Each brake controller comes with hardware for a drill mount, as well as an adhesive pad for a surface, stick-on mount.
Out-of-sight module
The main module that controls and operates the trailer brakes is separate from the rotary knob, allowing you to mount it out of sight. This promotes a factory look and feel in the interior of your vehicle, unlike most other aftermarket brake controllers.
Highly responsive
The Spectrum electric trailer brake controller not only has a subtle, integrated design, but it also provides intelligent, responsive braking. It uses an advanced accelerometer circuit to measure the inertia of the vehicle on three separate planes. It is able to sense the motion of the vehicle and trailer while braking, to provide proportional power for a smooth, safe stop.
Manual override
The Spectrum brake controller also gives the driver advanced control over the vehicle-trailer combination, providing an easily accessible manual override. The rotary knob itself has a built-in push-button feature that manually applies the trailer brakes whenever needed to maintain full control over the towing setup.
Automatic leveling
With its smart braking operation, the Spectrum is easy to set up for any towing scenario, including a diverse combination of vehicles and trailers. It features an automatic leveling system and automatic calibration to eliminate time-consuming requirements during the setup process. Question: | connected properly but will not engage trailor brakes, what is wrong |
Answer: | What year is your trailer? I'm having the same issue where it will work then it won't. I think it has something to do with the magneto brake system on the trailer brake drums |
Question: | Will this work on a 1997 f |
Answer: | I don't know. I do know I purchased it for my 2000 Tahoe and it was a plug and play install after I got the correct adapter. If you look on line and find the adapter for a 1997 Ford F350 and your vehicle is prewired like mine was it is simple. I really do like the controller it works as advertised. |
Question: | Is this a plug and play unit for a 2006 f250, or do i need to purchase a wire/adapter kit |
Answer: | I put it in a 1999 GMC and purchased the adapter and pluged it in and ran a a hot wire to the battery which is recommended. My brother in law bought the adapter for his 04 F250 so yes you need to get the, adapter for your model and then it is plug and play except for the hot wire. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long is the warranty |
Answer: | No this is not plug and play on a 1995 GM full sized truck. If the truck is equipped with a factory tow haul package then it should have trailer brake wiring taped back on the harness coming from the fuse block on the drivers fender and there’s also wiring taped back at the rear driver side of the frame. If it’s not there then you will have to wire the entire length of the truck. |
Question: | What does this unit come with |
Answer: | I think so it worked great on 2016 Silverado with the Tekonsha adapter. Plugged right in. |
Question: | Does this connect to 2021 dodger Ram or do I need to purchase a wiring adapter? Thanks |
Answer: | your truck should come with a built in break controller. mine did, it would be located above the buttons to turn off your rear view camera |
Question: | I have a 94 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins will it work with it |
Answer: | My package was damaged on arrival and no mounting bracket but the paperwork included states that there should have been. |
