12 best truck fifth wheel hitchs

A truck fifth wheel hitch is a crucial component for towing heavy loads, commonly used in the world of recreational vehicles (RVs) and trailers. It is designed to provide a secure connection between a truck and a large trailer, offering stability and maneuverability while towing. Here are some key points about fifth wheel hitches:

  1. Design: Fifth wheel hitches typically consist of a large, horseshoe-shaped plate that attaches to the bed of a pickup truck. This plate is mounted on a set of rails, allowing it to pivot and articulate as needed during turns and changes in terrain.

  2. Gooseneck vs. Fifth Wheel: It's important to distinguish between fifth wheel hitches and gooseneck hitches. While both are used for towing, they differ in their attachment points. Fifth wheel hitches connect to a kingpin on the trailer, whereas gooseneck hitches connect to a ball in the truck bed. The choice between the two depends on the type of trailer you're towing and personal preference.

  3. Towing Capacity: Fifth wheel hitches are known for their high towing capacities. They can handle heavy trailers, including large RVs, horse trailers, and cargo trailers. The capacity of a fifth wheel hitch depends on the specific model and truck's towing capacity.

  4. Installation: Installing a fifth wheel hitch requires drilling holes in the truck bed for the mounting rails. Proper installation is critical to ensure safety and stability when towing heavy loads.

  5. Safety Features: Many modern fifth wheel hitches come with safety features such as locking mechanisms to secure the connection between the truck and trailer, as well as shock-absorbing systems to reduce jarring and improve ride quality.

  6. Maneuverability: Fifth wheel hitches offer excellent maneuverability, allowing for sharp turns and more precise control when backing up.

  7. Compatibility: When choosing a fifth wheel hitch, it's essential to ensure compatibility with your specific truck and trailer. Different trucks and trailers may require different hitch models or adapter plates.

  8. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to keep a fifth wheel hitch in good working condition. This includes lubricating moving parts, inspecting for wear and tear, and ensuring proper torque on fasteners.

  9. Price Range: The cost of fifth wheel hitches can vary widely based on factors such as towing capacity, brand, and features. Higher-capacity and feature-rich hitches tend to be more expensive.

  10. Legal Requirements: Depending on your location and the weight of the trailer you're towing, there may be legal requirements regarding the use of fifth wheel hitches, such as specific licenses or safety regulations.

In summary, a truck fifth wheel hitch is a critical component for safely and efficiently towing heavy trailers. It provides a secure connection between the truck and trailer, allowing for high towing capacities and excellent maneuverability. When choosing a fifth wheel hitch, it's important to consider factors like compatibility, towing capacity, and safety features to ensure a smooth towing experience.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this fit a 2019 f250 superduty with an 8 ft. Bed
Answer: They came in the package that I received. Just keep in mind that "16k" is likely an exaggeration as far as weight rating is concerned. I have hauled heavy weight with my trucks for years and have used other brands of similar weight ratings with zero issues. I have had GREAT concerns with this hitch. i.e., pivot bolts have sheared THREE times and have had to be replaced, as well as the spot wielding on the "guide" for the king pin lock has just fallen out during use. I've had to pretty much rebuild this hitch to make it "safe" ad opposed to other brands that I have used for hundreds of thousands of miles without issue. Hope this helps.
Question: Is the mounting hardware included? Ie: rails, bolts and brackets to bolt to frame
Answer: The hitch is for a standard 5th wheel, Each truck takes a different adapter kit to mount it to your truck. You need to look to see if the sell an adapter kit for your truck. If your truck is not heavy duty enough they probably won't. The hitch it's self is strong enough to carry a big trailer.
Question: Do under bed brackets come with this fifth wheel hitch
Answer: No. It was just the hitch that you set into existing rails. I already had rails for 5th wheel installed.
Question: Is this compatible with 2001 dodge dakota slt 4.7l
Answer: I have a 2016 ram 2500 and if you have the rails in your truck bed, it works great.

CURT E-Series 5th Wheel Hitch

The CURT E-series 5th wheel hitch is designed to provide an economical 5th wheel option for budget-conscious customers. It features a dual-pivoting head with up to 10 degrees of lateral movement to promote comfortable towing. To help provide a quiet ride, the hitch head also has an anti-rattle skid plate and rubber stoppers.

The E-series hitch is available in a 16,000-lb. capacity only. It is compatible with a variety of mounting options, including OEM puck system legs and rollers, industry-standard base rails and the CURT X5 gooseneck adapter.

Pivoting hitch head

To help promote a smooth, stable, quiet ride, the E-series 5th wheel hitch has a dual-axis head that allows for up to 10 degrees of lateral movement, pivoting with the trailer.

Single-handle operation

Operating with just a single handle, the E-series 5th wheel hitch automatically locks, making the coupling process easier and more secure.

Versatile design

The E-series 5th wheel hitch mounts to all industry-standard base rails and has four height adjustment positions, allowing it to adapt to various truck bed wall heights.

How to select a 5th wheel hitch: What size is the truck bed?

Your truck bed length will determine the type of mounting platform you’ll need for your 5th wheel hitch: legs or a roller. 5th wheel legs are the standard option for mounting a 5th wheel hitch, but they will only fit in a long-bed truck. For short-bed trucks, extra clearance may be needed when making tight turns. A 5th wheel roller will allow the hitch to roll backward, providing enough clearance between the trailer overhang and the truck cab.

Does the truck have an OEM puck system?

If you own a truck from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Nissan or Ram, your truck bed may be equipped with a puck system (pictured). If your truck has a long bed with the puck system, select a CURT 5th wheel hitch with the appropriate OEM puck system legs. If your truck has a short bed with the puck system, select a CURT 5th wheel hitch with the appropriate OEM puck system roller or roller adapter.

Do you prefer permanent base rails?

If your truck does not have the OEM puck system, you will need to install 5th wheel rails. The traditional method for installing base rails is to use vehicle-specific under-bed brackets. First, select the custom under-bed brackets that fit your specific make and model, as well as a set of industry-standard base rails. Next, if you have a long-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with legs. If you have a short-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with a roller. Remember to always abide by the weight capacity of the lowest-rated towing component.

Would you like the option to easily remove the base rails?

Another 5th wheel mounting option is a gooseneck hitch. Using the CURT Double Lock EZr or Double Lock gooseneck and X5 adapter plate allows you to have a removable set of industry-standard 5th wheel base rails. First, select the Double Lock EZr gooseneck hitch kit that fits your specific make and model. Next, select the corresponding X5 adapter plate. Finally, if you have a long-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with legs. If you have a short-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with a roller.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with hitch pins
Answer: There are like 3 slots to adjust the hitch height.
Question: What is the required distance between mounting rails? I already have rails installed for a HiddenHitch setup
Answer: Not if your truck has the pucks in the bed. This one is for the rails which you would have to buy. Most people with short beds get the slider so the trailer wont hit the truck.
Question: Is the hitch adjustable if so whats the highest and lowest hights with universal rails
Answer: I'm guessing it will but you might want to ask someone who installs these items for a living.
Question: Will this fit a2017 short box 3500 ram
Answer: After looking at photos of valley hitch's it seems that they would work but I don't have first hand knowledge of this.

Product description

A CURT 5th wheel trailer hitch is the ultimate combination of towing power and smooth driving, but a CURT 5th wheel mounted on a 5th wheel roller turns this gentle giant into the ultimate in mobility too. User questions & answers

Question: If I buy the slider and the intermediate plate will it fit a Reese head that is my question
Answer: I am not sure if the Reese head will fit. I would get ahold of a Reese Tech for that info. I have a slider/roller but I only used it once. I was able to turn and backup without any issues. We travel to Alaska last with our 5th wheel put on 9000 miles with no issues. I flat tire on truck. No problem. I would not buy a slider again. When slider is to rear on my truck you can't turn with the tailgate in. Hitch will hit tailgate. Good Luck
Question: Will this system work with the Curt Q
Answer: I don't believe it will.
Question: Will this head work with the e16 legs
Answer: I am new to this but I did a lot of research before I bought. These legs will fit this roller, but make sure they fit your truck bed too. I got a set of Reese legs (from another online marketplace that shall remain nameless!) to fit this unit and my truck that had been set up for 5th wheel when I bought it and they fit fine. The legs have to be specific to your vehicle. I also got my Curt e16 head unit from Amazon and they all fit together perfectly
Question: will this work on a 2018 ford f-150 with a 6.5 box
Answer: Yes, I have a 6.5' box and these are made for anything less than 8. However, you need to be sure it fits with the 5th wheel you are pulling as its max gross weight is 16K lbs.

Question: How low and how high does this hitch go too

Question: Will this also fit "eaz lift" 5th wheel's as well
Answer: They should as long as it is a standard plate
Question: will these work with a valley hitch
Answer: I don't believe I ever answered any questions about these rails. However, I bought them in 2015 along with the mounting kit for the frame as well as the hitch I don't remember. It's always best to call the manufacturer.
Question: Will these rails work for my Spyder 16085 gooseneck
Answer: I have been using this hitch for 3 years with a 2015 Shortbed Ram, have always had enough clearance to back my 5th wheel into any campsite we have been too. IN 3 years we have been to more than 20 different campsites. I also have a truexdo trucksport tonneau cover on my bed with no clearance issues
Question: one answer in your Q & A section says the hardware kit comes with the rails and other answers says it doe'snt, so which is it
Answer: If you go to the Anderson Manufacturer sight, they show you how. For me, it works great and is easy to do. It works great for my 35ft. 5th wheel. It is great if you use your gooseneck hook up for other trailers (which I do) and do not want the standard large 5th wheel hitch in the back of your truck. This whole setup is awesome, lightweight with easy install and easy removal for dailyu full use of the bed of your truck.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this b&w 5th wheel hitch better than the reese goosebox gen2? i own a duramax with a 6.5ft standard bed
Answer: No. Get the under bed gooseneck hitch / turn over ball specific to your truck. Not really hard to install it by yourself, does take a few hours or it did me. The companion / 5th wheel hitch slides into the hole in bed where the gooseneck ball would go. Release pin thru it and tighten the locking bolt to 60 ft lbs. Takes longer to lift it outta the bed of the trk than to get it ready to remove. Top plate comes off stand, then lift stand out. The stand is much heavier than the top plate but nothing one man can’t handle. Wouldn’t want to carry it very far but from the trk bed to the shop where I store it when not in use is no big deal. I have a plastic bed liner and had to cut strips in it for the frame feet strips to set in the bed corrugations. U don’t have to do that with spray in liner or no liner. I’m very happy with the easy and fast swap from a flat truck bed to gooseneck hitch or 5th wheel hitch & vice versa.
Question: is this rated for 20,000 lbs towing capacity
Answer: Your latch will drop back into place and you tighten the bolt, after you tighten the bolt double check you pull for the goose neck, it won't release because of the pressure put on it from tightening the bolt. After I pulled my fifth wheel couple times I double checked the bolt. good to go.
Question: Does the under bed mounting system come with the hitch
Answer: No. you will need to buy a rail kit. This is an above the rail hitch. The above kit is here: https://www.etrailer.com/Fifth-Wheel/Dodge/Ram+Pickup/2011/C16420-204.html?vehicleid=2011642656Good below hitch with rail kit is here:https://www.etrailer.com/5w-2011_Dodge_Ram+Pickup.htm?style=2500+Series,+8+Foot+Bed&furl=
Question: So I pull the pin and remove the ball and this hitch just drops in and just tighten bolts and good to go
Answer: Not sure where you got 52 pounds. That might be for just the head. Hitch is two pieces Base is heavy and I guess about eighty pounds for base. Two pieces together is well over 100 pounds. I always take my hitch out of truck when returning from trip and I use a rope hoist (7 to 1 ) ratio. Being 77 years old weight is too much to easily lift.

A CURT 5th wheel to gooseneck adapter is the perfect way to maximize towing functionality on your heavy-duty pickup truck. With a set of 5th wheel rails already installed on your truck, a 5th wheel gooseneck hitch adapter allows you to tow gooseneck trailers.

Heavy-duty towing doesn't need to be a competition: gooseneck hitch vs 5th wheel. With a CURT 5th wheel to gooseneck adapter hitch, you can tow both types of trailers with confidence and convenience.

Maximum functionality

A CURT 5th wheel to gooseneck adapter gives your pickup truck a complete arsenal of towing options, allowing you to quickly and easily switch between a 5th wheel hitch vs gooseneck hitch. Easy, as-needed installation

Each CURT 5th wheel gooseneck hitch comes with four 5th wheel hitch pins. After dropping the gooseneck hitch adapter into the 5th wheel base rails, the four pins secure the adapter into place and allow for easy removal as needed.
