12 best fifth wheel hitchs

A fifth-wheel hitch is a towing device commonly used for hauling heavy trailers, such as RVs (recreational vehicles) or large trailers used for transporting goods. These hitches are designed to provide stability and ease of towing, particularly for larger and heavier loads. Here is what you should know about fifth-wheel hitches:

  1. Design: Fifth-wheel hitches are named for their distinctive design, which includes a large horseshoe-shaped coupling plate mounted in the bed of a pickup truck. The hitch connects to the kingpin of the trailer, allowing for a secure and stable towing connection.

  2. Towing Capacity: Fifth-wheel hitches are known for their high towing capacity. They are capable of towing trailers with significant weights, making them popular choices for towing large RVs, horse trailers, and heavy-duty cargo trailers.

  3. Types: There are two main types of fifth-wheel hitches: fixed and sliding. Fixed fifth-wheel hitches are stationary and are suitable for trucks with long truck beds. Sliding fifth-wheel hitches, on the other hand, can be adjusted to slide back and forth within the truck bed. This sliding feature is useful for short-bed trucks as it provides extra maneuverability to prevent the trailer from contacting the truck cab during sharp turns.

  4. Installation: Installing a fifth-wheel hitch typically requires mounting brackets to be attached to the truck bed. This is a job that may require professional installation or experienced DIY skills, as it involves drilling holes in the truck bed for the mounting brackets.

  5. Compatibility: It's crucial to ensure that the fifth-wheel hitch is compatible with both the type of trailer you intend to tow and the specific make and model of your truck. Hitches are often rated for different weight capacities, so selecting the right hitch for your towing needs is essential.

  6. Safety: Properly securing and maintaining a fifth-wheel hitch is critical for safe towing. Regular inspections of the hitch, lubricating moving parts, and ensuring that all bolts and fasteners are tight are essential safety measures.

  7. Usage: Fifth-wheel hitches are commonly used by RV enthusiasts, horse owners, and those who need to tow heavy trailers for work or recreational purposes. They offer greater stability and control compared to traditional ball hitches, especially when towing large loads.

  8. Accessories: There are various accessories available for fifth-wheel hitches, including hitch covers, locking mechanisms, and stabilizers, which can enhance safety and convenience.

When selecting a fifth-wheel hitch, it's important to consider factors such as your towing capacity, the weight of the trailer, the type of truck you have, and your specific towing needs. Additionally, follow the manufacturer's guidelines for installation, maintenance, and safe towing practices to ensure a smooth and secure towing experience.

Question: Does this 5th wheel hitch comes with the pins
Answer: I would think with that short of bed you would need a slider hitch.
Question: Does this hitch come with the brackets and hardware
Answer: There is no installation kit that comes with this, it is hitch and legs only. So you will need to get the rails to fit your truck.
Question: will this fit a 2009 Ram 1500 1/2 ton with a 5foot 7inch bed
Answer: It’s about preference to me. If you are going to use the bed of your truck frequently I would buy the Reese goose box, if not I would save the money and buy the b&w. I have the B&W however if I was on the market for one right now I would buy the goose box.
Question: will this fit in a 94 f-150xlt 4x4 long bed truck need one pretty quick
Answer: Yes, rated for 20,000# and would probably handle more for short trips. I used one commercially for a year and could not be happier with it.

Dependable connection

Each Q-series 5th wheel hitch comes with dual jaws to fully wrap the kingpin, reduce chucking noises from the trailer and enhance towing security.

All Q-series 5th wheel hitches are equipped with a lockable, short-throw handle that automatically engages with the kingpin to simplify coupling even further.

How to select a 5th wheel hitch: What size is the truck bed?

Your truck bed length will determine the type of mounting platform you’ll need for your 5th wheel hitch: legs or a roller. 5th wheel legs are the standard option for mounting a 5th wheel hitch, but they will only fit in a long-bed truck. For short-bed trucks, extra clearance may be needed when making tight turns. A 5th wheel roller will allow the hitch to roll backward, providing enough clearance between the trailer overhang and the truck cab.

Does the truck have an OEM puck system?

If you own a truck from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Nissan or Ram, your truck bed may be equipped with a puck system (pictured). If your truck has a long bed with the puck system, select a CURT 5th wheel hitch with the appropriate OEM puck system legs. If your truck has a short bed with the puck system, select a CURT 5th wheel hitch with the appropriate OEM puck system roller or roller adapter.

Do you prefer permanent base rails?

If your truck does not have the OEM puck system, you will need to install 5th wheel rails. The traditional method for installing base rails is to use vehicle-specific under-bed brackets. First, select the custom under-bed brackets that fit your specific make and model, as well as a set of industry-standard base rails. Next, if you have a long-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with legs. If you have a short-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with a roller. Remember to always abide by the weight capacity of the lowest-rated towing component.

Would you like the option to easily remove the base rails?

Another 5th wheel mounting option is a gooseneck hitch. Using the CURT Double Lock EZr or Double Lock gooseneck and X5 adapter plate allows you to have a removable set of industry-standard 5th wheel base rails. First, select the Double Lock EZr gooseneck hitch kit that fits your specific make and model. Next, select the corresponding X5 adapter plate. Finally, if you have a long-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with legs. If you have a short-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with a roller.

Heavy-duty towing doesn't need to be a competition: gooseneck hitch vs 5th wheel. With a CURT 5th wheel to gooseneck adapter hitch, you can tow both types of trailers with confidence and convenience.

Maximum functionality

A CURT 5th wheel to gooseneck adapter gives your pickup truck a complete arsenal of towing options, allowing you to quickly and easily switch between a 5th wheel hitch vs gooseneck hitch. This simple but powerful adapter plate eliminates the need for complicated installations and towing equipment overhauls. Just drop it into place whenever needed!

Easy, as-needed installation

Each CURT 5th wheel gooseneck hitch comes with four 5th wheel hitch pins. After dropping the gooseneck hitch adapter into the 5th wheel base rails, the four pins secure the adapter into place and allow for easy removal as needed. User questions & answers

Question: Will this work with the legs that me E16 came with
Answer: I have machine washed many things that were supposedly not machine washable in a gentle cycle/cold water that turned out just fine. If you’re that worried, hand-washing works just as well. The spot-clean only Is just to cover their...cushions.
Question: Does this comes with the 16560 R16 roller, or is sold separately
Answer: I think you should get 2 cushions. I checked the description to verify. Be aware, they are handwash only or spot clean only. I tried laundering them in the washing machine, but the foam absorbed so much water, that the machines became off balance during spin cycle and 'walked away' from the hose that drains the water. Flooded basement ensued. Argh! I suppose you could soak them in the washing machine, but not having the spin cycle means they will need to dry for a long time!
Question: Can I replace me E16 with a A16 head and reuse my roller base
Answer: Yes
Question: So does this hitch have any play like the e16 hitch? My e16 hitch makes lots of noise when start or stoping
Answer: More blue. Very pretty aqua. Nice thick pads non slip too. I would order them again.
Question: what is the diameter of the welding flange
Answer: Yes they can be washed BUT the ties tear easily and the fiber filling comes out.
Question: What is the lug spaceing
Answer: They seem to be about 2 1/2 ins thick. They are very comfortable and look good. Good product.
Question: how big of rim do you need for this product
Answer: Yes they are, and the ties are not strong. They ripped within a week of having them.
Question: Made in USA
Answer: I’m not sure about plastic covers, but the chair cushions are smaller than most cushions. Was a little disappointed.

Easy setup

A-series 5th wheel hitches feature alignment pegs on the hitch legs, as well as easy-access mounting bolts for simple leg-to-body attachment (select models).

Simple installation

Each 5th wheel hitch is designed for fast, one-pin head removal to make removing the 5th wheel from the truck bed easier with smaller, lighter pieces.

Reliable connection

The A-series 5th wheel head is built with high-strength, interlocking jaws that greatly reduce chucking noises. The head also has an extra-wide opening for easy coupling.

Articulating head

The fully articulating torsion head of the A-series 5th wheel offers controlled coupling and stable, quiet towing with your 5th wheel trailer.

CURT has a dedicated in-house testing and engineering facility in Detroit, MI to confirm that all of our 5th wheel hitches pass SAE J2638 specifications for safety.

Product description

Like the other 5th wheel hitches of the CURT Q-Series, the CURT Q20 is a specialist in its class. It features a gross trailer weight capacity of 20,000 lbs. and can accept a vertical load limit of 5,000 lbs., giving it the capability to tow most large recreational vehicles, campers and many other 5th wheel trailers. Also like the Q24, the Q20 5th wheel has a superior hitch head, pivoting on a spherical axial bearing. This ensures smooth, quiet towing and allows unimpeded head movement and a wide turning radius for your trailer. The Q20 comes with a durable carbide powder coat finish to give this hitch the best possible defense against corrosion, scratching, UV damage and whatever else you throw its way. It is tested in accordance with SAE J2638 for safety and is also backed by a limited lifetime warranty to give you peace of mind. This 20K 5th wheel hitch comes with a set of standard 5th wheel legs that are ready to mount into your truck bed with a pair 5th wheel rails and brackets (base rails and brackets sold separately). Certain turret-style pin boxes, such as Sidewinder, are not compatible with CURT Q-series hitches and should not be used as they may create vehicle / trailer handling hazards. Please contact CURT Product Support for compatibility information.

User questions & answers

Question: will this fit a Kwik Slide slider
Answer: Don’t know as I stayed with all Curt MFG. products.
Question: I have a Curt Q20 hitch. Is it normal to have a clunking sound while starting and stopping
Answer: My hitch does not clunck when starting or stoping. I would go through your jitch and make aure everythi g is tight and torqued to spec. Also, inspect king pin and hitch jaws for wear. Lastly mak sure you are fully engaed before pulling. Hope this helps.
Question: will this hitch fit a 2020 2500HD with factory hitch package. I believe its called a Puck hitch
Answer: No. This hitch is for rails, not the puck system.
Question: Can the head be easily removed from the base to make it lighter to remove in two sections
Answer: I have tried both ways on mine. I have found the easiest and quickest way is to just remove the 4 pins from the base rails and take it out that way. It takes about 3 minutes compared to about 15 minutes removing the head and is not much heavier either after trying it.
