12 best fifth wheel hitches
Fifth wheel hitches are essential towing components designed for connecting trailers, such as recreational vehicles (RVs) and large cargo trailers, to trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles. They are commonly used for towing heavy loads, providing stability and maneuverability while on the road. Here's what you should know about fifth wheel hitches:
Design and Function: Fifth wheel hitches consist of a hitch head, a kingpin, and a set of rails that are typically mounted in the bed of a pickup truck. The kingpin on the trailer attaches to the hitch head on the truck, creating a secure connection.
Types of Fifth Wheel Hitches:
- Fixed Hitch: Fixed fifth wheel hitches are permanently attached to the bed of the truck. They provide stability but limit the use of the truck bed when not towing.
- Sliding Hitch: Sliding fifth wheel hitches have a sliding mechanism that allows the hitch to move backward and forward in the truck bed. This is useful for short-bed trucks, as it prevents the trailer from making contact with the cab during tight turns.
Compatibility: Fifth wheel hitches are designed to be compatible with specific weight ratings and trailer types. It's crucial to match the hitch's capacity to the weight of the trailer you intend to tow.
Installation: Installing a fifth wheel hitch typically involves bolting the hitch head and rails to the truck bed. The process may vary depending on the hitch's design and the specific truck model.
Safety Features: Many fifth wheel hitches come with safety features such as locking mechanisms and indicator lights to ensure that the hitch is securely attached.
Towing Capacity: The towing capacity of a fifth wheel hitch depends on its design and construction. It's important to select a hitch that can handle the weight of your trailer and cargo.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, including lubrication of moving parts and inspection of bolts and fasteners, is essential to ensure the hitch's continued safe operation.
Accessories: Various accessories can enhance the functionality of fifth wheel hitches, such as kingpin locks for added security, hitch covers to protect against the elements, and hitch-mounted bike racks.
Legal Requirements: Depending on your location, there may be specific legal requirements regarding the use of fifth wheel hitches, such as weight limits and safety regulations.Always ensure compliance with local laws and regulations.
In summary, fifth wheel hitches are crucial towing components that provide a secure and stable connection between a truck and a trailer, making them ideal for towing heavy loads like RVs and cargo trailers. Choosing the right hitch and maintaining it properly are essential for safe and efficient towing.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this b&w 5th wheel hitch better than the reese goosebox gen2? i own a duramax with a 6.5ft standard bed |
Answer: | No. Get the under bed gooseneck hitch / turn over ball specific to your truck. Not really hard to install it by yourself, does take a few hours or it did me. The companion / 5th wheel hitch slides into the hole in bed where the gooseneck ball would go. Release pin thru it and tighten the locking bolt to 60 ft lbs. Takes longer to lift it outta the bed of the trk than to get it ready to remove. Top plate comes off stand, then lift stand out. The stand is much heavier than the top plate but nothing one man can’t handle. Wouldn’t want to carry it very far but from the trk bed to the shop where I store it when not in use is no big deal. I have a plastic bed liner and had to cut strips in it for the frame feet strips to set in the bed corrugations. U don’t have to do that with spray in liner or no liner. I’m very happy with the easy and fast swap from a flat truck bed to gooseneck hitch or 5th wheel hitch & vice versa. |
Question: | is this rated for 20,000 lbs towing capacity |
Answer: | Your latch will drop back into place and you tighten the bolt, after you tighten the bolt double check you pull for the goose neck, it won't release because of the pressure put on it from tightening the bolt. After I pulled my fifth wheel couple times I double checked the bolt. good to go. |
Question: | Does the under bed mounting system come with the hitch |
Answer: | No. you will need to buy a rail kit. This is an above the rail hitch. The above kit is here: https://www.etrailer.com/Fifth-Wheel/Dodge/Ram+Pickup/2011/C16420-204.html?vehicleid=2011642656Good below hitch with rail kit is here:https://www.etrailer.com/5w-2011_Dodge_Ram+Pickup.htm?style=2500+Series,+8+Foot+Bed&furl= |
Question: | So I pull the pin and remove the ball and this hitch just drops in and just tighten bolts and good to go |
Answer: | Not sure where you got 52 pounds. That might be for just the head. Hitch is two pieces Base is heavy and I guess about eighty pounds for base. Two pieces together is well over 100 pounds. I always take my hitch out of truck when returning from trip and I use a rope hoist (7 to 1 ) ratio. Being 77 years old weight is too much to easily lift. |

Question: | Is this a dual pivot hitch |
Answer: | It will fit in anything but you need mounting rails. A 5th wheel would crush a tacoma. Check weight capacity |

Answer: | It has 3 adjustments on it. It goes from 15 to 17 to 19 inches above the bed of the vehicle. |
Question: | Will this fit 2014 Toyota Tacoma |
Answer: | Not sure off thickness..but have been using it for a year and we full time so it is in use daily...I would recommend |
Question: | How low and how high does this hitch go too |
Answer: | Not without researching this but I fill and think that the center diameter should be the same in the 10" or 12" disk. Rv King pin size seems to be a standard 2" but there are probably some oditys out there that I'm not aware of. |

How to select a 5th wheel hitch: What size is the truck bed?
Your truck bed length will determine the type of mounting platform you’ll need for your 5th wheel hitch: legs or a roller. 5th wheel legs are the standard option for mounting a 5th wheel hitch, but they will only fit in a long-bed truck. For short-bed trucks, extra clearance may be needed when making tight turns. A 5th wheel roller will allow the hitch to roll backward, providing enough clearance between the trailer overhang and the truck cab.
Does the truck have an OEM puck system?
If you own a truck from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Nissan or Ram, your truck bed may be equipped with a puck system (pictured). If your truck has a long bed with the puck system, select a CURT 5th wheel hitch with the appropriate OEM puck system legs. If your truck has a short bed with the puck system, select a CURT 5th wheel hitch with the appropriate OEM puck system roller or roller adapter.
Do you prefer permanent base rails?
If your truck does not have the OEM puck system, you will need to install 5th wheel rails. The traditional method for installing base rails is to use vehicle-specific under-bed brackets. First, select the custom under-bed brackets that fit your specific make and model, as well as a set of industry-standard base rails. Next, if you have a long-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with legs. If you have a short-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with a roller. Remember to always abide by the weight capacity of the lowest-rated towing component.
Would you like the option to easily remove the base rails?
Another 5th wheel mounting option is a gooseneck hitch. Using the CURT Double Lock EZr or Double Lock gooseneck and X5 adapter plate allows you to have a removable set of industry-standard 5th wheel base rails. First, select the Double Lock EZr gooseneck hitch kit that fits your specific make and model. Next, select the corresponding X5 adapter plate. Finally, if you have a long-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with legs. If you have a short-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with a roller.

IMPORTANT: If you are using an Andersen Ultimate Connection with a Rota-Flex Pinbox, we REQUIRE you to use a Rota-Flex Lockout Kit to prevent damage to the hitch and/or tow vehicle. It also keeps the rubber pad in your Rota-Flex pin box from shifting over time. If your Andersen Ultimate Connection (3220, or 3220-TBX) will be installed on a 2015-2019 model of GMC or Chevy Trucks with no OEM, we suggest pairing it with the Full Bed Support System. This helps prevent warping that may result from torque forces, and fastens to the frame beneath the rearward bed saver rail. If you need to change the height of your gooseneck ball, you may need a coupler tube to extend the connection of the Ultimate Connection so it can attach to the gooseneck ball.

We’ve taken the hitch plate, rocker arm and crossmember and combined all three functions into our SuperLite King Pin Adapter. The adapter clamps to the trailer’s king pin and mounts an upside-down ball in place of all three. Then we took a gooseneck coupler, and turned it upside-down and mounted it to a base that fits industry standard rails or PullRite’s totally removable SuperRails featuring Clean Bed Technology (CBT). We’ve added a funnel to the gooseneck coupler so that all you have to do is aim the ball over any part of the funnel to guide the ball into the coupler tube. Because the ball and the coupler funnel are completely visible from the driver’s seat, SuperLite is absolutely the easiest fifth wheel hitch to couple in the industry, and the lightest at only 52 lbs.
- Easiest fifth wheel hitch to couple in the industry
- Fits onto industry standard rails or PullRite's SuperRails featuring Clean Bed Technology
- Ball and the coupler funnel are completely visible from the driver’s seat
- Weights only 52 lbs.
- 20,000 GTW capacity
User questions & answers
Question: | Is the king pin centered between the bed rails or offset to allow for cab clearance |
Answer: | Yes I have it installed on 2006 2500hd with a 6.6 ft bed and have not had any problems but always careful if making a tight turn. Actually amazed with the amount of clearance I have turning. Had the superglide(great hitch) but loving the weight of the superlight! Quality product!!! |
Question: | Anyone use this hitch on a 6'9" bed with the ball adapter forward of the king pin and have any clearance issues at the bed side rails |
Answer: | Not that I'm aware of. Your gooseneck hitch is designed to work on a surface mounted hitch ball. This hitch sets about 10-12 inches above the bed floor and is set for the ball to be on the trailer, not on the hitch. Also the front end of your trailer would be about 12 inches or so high. Not a safe towing aspect. |
Question: | Manufacturer says hitch is only design for long bed trucks. Has anyone install this in a short bed truck |
Answer: | 300 pounds is no problem |
Question: | Is there a simple adapter for a gooseneck trailer |
Answer: | Yes it should fit all fifth wheel hitches. |

The CURT Q24 is the heavyweight champion of 5th wheel hitches. With a gross trailer weight capacity of 24,000 lbs. and a vertical load limit of 6,000 lbs., the Q24 is capable of handling the heaviest of 5th wheel trailers, including deluxe RV and oversize campers. Something that sets the Q24 5th wheel hitch apart from competitive models is its spherical axial bearing. Instead of having a set of rods on which the hitch head can pivot, the Q24 uses a spherical bearing to allow the hitch head to pivot in virtually any direction. This means smoother turns, a quieter ride and less strain on your towing equipment and truck. The CURT Q24 5th wheel trailer hitch also features dual-locking jaws, a self-aligning head, single-handle operation and a three-position coupling indicator. It comes with a durable carbide powder coat finish, a limited lifetime warranty and is tested in accordance with SAE J2638 for safety. This 24K 5th wheel hitch comes with a set of standard 5th wheel legs that are ready to mount into your truck bed with a pair 5th wheel rails and brackets (base rails and brackets sold separately). Certain turret-style pin boxes, such as Sidewinder, are not compatible with CURT Q-series hitches and should not be used as they may create vehicle / trailer handling hazards. Please contact CURT Product Support for compatibility information.
- QUIET RIDE. This Q-series CURT 5th wheel hitch is engineered to promote the quietest 5th wheel towing possible. It features a patented, spherical axial bearing that allows the head to easily tilt in any direction needed
- COUPLING INDICATOR. Built into this 5th wheel hitch is a 3-position indicator that shows the coupling status of the hitch and your trailer. It conveniently shows if the 5th wheel hitch is coupled, uncoupled or ready to tow
- EASY OPERATION. This CURT 5th wheel hitch operates with a single, short-throw handle to promote ergonomic operation and easier coupling of your 5th wheel trailer. The handle is also lockable for maximum security on the road
- SAFETY-TESTED. Tested and rated for 24,000 lbs. gross trailer weight and 6,000 lbs. vertical load, this 5th wheel hitch is capable of towing a wide variety of 5th wheels (limited to lowest-rated towing component). It tested to SAE J2638 specifications
- VERSATILE FIT. This 5th wheel hitch fits any industry-standard 5th wheel base rails, such as CURT rails #16104 and #16204 (rails and brackets sold separately) (Not compatible with turret-style pin boxes, such as Sidewinder)
User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with hitch pins |
Answer: | There are like 3 slots to adjust the hitch height. |
Question: | What is the required distance between mounting rails? I already have rails installed for a HiddenHitch setup |
Answer: | Not if your truck has the pucks in the bed. This one is for the rails which you would have to buy. Most people with short beds get the slider so the trailer wont hit the truck. |
Question: | Is the hitch adjustable if so whats the highest and lowest hights with universal rails |
Answer: | I'm guessing it will but you might want to ask someone who installs these items for a living. |
Question: | Will this fit a2017 short box 3500 ram |
Answer: | After looking at photos of valley hitch's it seems that they would work but I don't have first hand knowledge of this. |
Product features
CURT Q-Series 5th Wheel Hitches
CURT Q-series 5th wheel hitches are designed to tow your RV or other 5th wheel trailer as quietly as possible. Each 5th wheel hitch is built with around a spherical axial bearing that allows the hitch head to tilt in any direction necessary for a smooth ride.
CURT Q-series 5th wheel hitches are available in capacities of 20,000, 24,000 and 25,000 lbs., and they are compatible with a variety of mounting options.
360-degree tilt
The Q-series spherical axial bearing allows the 5th wheel hitch head and coupling point to tilt in any direction necessary to ensure a smooth, quiet ride.
Dependable connection
Each Q-series 5th wheel hitch comes with dual jaws to fully wrap the kingpin, reduce chucking noises from the trailer and enhance towing security.
Easy coupling
The wide, self-aligning Q-series 5th wheel head helps eliminate errors when backing up to the trailer, allowing for less stress and reduced time for the coupling process.
Simple operation
All Q-series 5th wheel hitches are equipped with a lockable, short-throw handle that automatically engages with the kingpin to simplify coupling even further.

User questions & answers
Question: | the 3300 in new ford setts too high adjusted all the way down and hitch pin up do they make shorter adjustment arms |
Answer: | I have mine at the lowest setting,so I can use my sliding cover and I have about 5 inches above my bed, slider wouldn't help I think, just make sure with ur box, ur fifthwheel is high enough to clear the box.. |
Question: | what hitch and means of attachments do I need for my 2000 F350 ford long bed truck |
Answer: | This is for Ford equipped with the factory puck system, and they did not make that in 2004, or you would have to buy the under bed mounting system. So no this will not work on your truck |
Question: | I have a long bed f350 with a Weathergaurd Saddlebox 117 30" toolbox, will i need a slider to back the trailer or will it clear with the rigid hitch |
Answer: | My answer is the same as the other folks. It comes with pins to hook it to the bed mounted rails which are purchased separately to fit your bed and style of attachment to that bed. Some bolt to the bed and others use factory mounted puck systems. It depends upon your individual truck and preference. |
Question: | Will this work in a 2004 Ford F250 Super duty |
Answer: | My truck had a Reese fifth wheel rated at 15,000. I unpinned and placed my 24,000 Curt right in the existing rails. No modifications. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it fit my 2002 chevy silverado 1500 Hd |
Answer: | This is a standard rail kit and can fit hitches to 25K (Possibly Higher). I have a similar set on my Freightliner FL60 that I tow a 36' 5th wheel and a boat behind that. These should work fine for a 20K hitch with the pin tabs that drop through the plate. |
Question: | Will this fit a 2020 k1500 Silverado with a 5.8 bed |
Answer: | Not sure on that new of truck. Lots of holes in the brackets. How many do you want to drill in to your trucks frame? I would order truck specific. |
Question: | What is the max capacity on the product? I'm looking for 20k lbs capacity |
Answer: | Per the manufacturer website, the models that fit your vehicle are 16031 and 16033. You may want to contact them directly for further assistance. |
Question: | Will these fit a 2021 3500 chev |
Answer: | Rails & hardware not included. Just pins to fasten 5th wheel to rails. Rails were already installed on my truck when purchased. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a curt q20 hitch |
Answer: | I haven't seen a weight limit printed, but I have the B&W Companion Slider and it weighs around 300 pounds. I didn't hesitate using it on my hitch. B&W wouldn't put a lightweight lifter on the market. |
Question: | How big is the hole in the top |
Answer: | The head units, that contain the locking jaws, are the same across all of the B&W hitches so it should work. |
Question: | Is there a hitch weight limit |
Answer: | That is just the hitch. It will fit into the bedrails of any standard fifth wheel install kit that has standard bed rails. Like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0008G1NB6/ref=sspa_dk_detail_5?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B0008G1NB6&pd_rd_w=0oVmi&pf_rd_p=48d372c1-f7e1-4b8b-9d02-4bd86f5158c5&pd_rd_wg=m4P9r&pf_rd_r=53441AEF1A1A9QT6QBYS&pd_rd_r=b4dcf9da-9d2b-4345-b7be-527b3e71fcbd&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzVkc5OUdHTEtPU0RKJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTU0NzE3MUhEMkVLNUhJWERYRyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMzExNDY3MTZNR09aODFNVjBRVCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2RldGFpbCZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= |
Question: | Will it work on a Patriot 18k slider |
Answer: | It will fit on any pickup that has the matching install kit with in-bed rails. So worry about the install kit with bed rails, not the hitch itself. |
