14 best 16k 5th wheel hitchs

A 16K 5th wheel hitch, often referred to as a 16,000-pound capacity 5th wheel hitch, is a type of hitch designed for towing heavy loads with a fifth-wheel trailer. Here's some information about it:

  1. Weight Capacity: The "16K" in the name refers to the weight capacity of the hitch, which is 16,000 pounds (or approximately 7,257 kilograms). This means it can safely tow trailers with a gross weight (including cargo) of up to 16,000 pounds.

  2. Mounting System: A 16K 5th wheel hitch typically mounts in the bed of a pickup truck. It requires special rails or brackets that are installed in the truck bed to provide a secure attachment point for the hitch.

  3. Compatibility: These hitches are designed to be compatible with fifth-wheel trailers, which have a unique kingpin connection point that couples to the hitch. They are not designed for use with conventional travel trailers or other types of towed trailers.

  4. Types: There are different types of 16K 5th wheel hitches, including fixed hitches and sliding hitches. Fixed hitches are stationary and are ideal for trucks with long beds. Sliding hitches have a mechanism that allows them to move back and forth, which can be useful for trucks with shorter beds to prevent cab-to-trailer contact during sharp turns.

  5. Materials and Construction: These hitches are typically constructed from heavy-duty steel to ensure strength and durability, as they need to support the weight of the trailer.

  6. Installation: Proper installation is crucial for safety when using a 16K 5th wheel hitch. It's recommended to have it installed by a professional to ensure it's securely mounted and aligned in the truck bed.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as lubricating moving parts and inspecting for wear and tear, is essential to ensure the hitch continues to function safely and reliably.

  8. Safety: Towing heavy loads with a fifth-wheel trailer requires proper knowledge and experience. It's important to follow all safety guidelines, including weight distribution, proper hitching procedures, and adhering to towing speed limits.

Remember that towing heavy loads can be potentially dangerous, so always prioritize safety when using any towing equipment.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this 5th wheel hitch comes with the pins
Answer: I would think with that short of bed you would need a slider hitch.
Question: Does this hitch come with the brackets and hardware
Answer: There is no installation kit that comes with this, it is hitch and legs only. So you will need to get the rails to fit your truck.
Question: will this fit a 2009 Ram 1500 1/2 ton with a 5foot 7inch bed
Answer: It’s about preference to me. If you are going to use the bed of your truck frequently I would buy the Reese goose box, if not I would save the money and buy the b&w. I have the B&W however if I was on the market for one right now I would buy the goose box.
Question: will this fit in a 94 f-150xlt 4x4 long bed truck need one pretty quick
Answer: Yes, rated for 20,000# and would probably handle more for short trips. I used one commercially for a year and could not be happier with it.

CURT E-Series 5th Wheel Hitch

The CURT E-series 5th wheel hitch is designed to provide an economical 5th wheel option for budget-conscious customers. It features a dual-pivoting head with up to 10 degrees of lateral movement to promote comfortable towing. To help provide a quiet ride, the hitch head also has an anti-rattle skid plate and rubber stoppers.

The E-series hitch is available in a 16,000-lb. capacity only. It is compatible with a variety of mounting options, including OEM puck system legs and rollers, industry-standard base rails and the CURT X5 gooseneck adapter.

Pivoting hitch head

To help promote a smooth, stable, quiet ride, the E-series 5th wheel hitch has a dual-axis head that allows for up to 10 degrees of lateral movement, pivoting with the trailer.

Single-handle operation

Operating with just a single handle, the E-series 5th wheel hitch automatically locks, making the coupling process easier and more secure.

Versatile design

The E-series 5th wheel hitch mounts to all industry-standard base rails and has four height adjustment positions, allowing it to adapt to various truck bed wall heights.

How to select a 5th wheel hitch: What size is the truck bed?

Your truck bed length will determine the type of mounting platform you’ll need for your 5th wheel hitch: legs or a roller. 5th wheel legs are the standard option for mounting a 5th wheel hitch, but they will only fit in a long-bed truck. For short-bed trucks, extra clearance may be needed when making tight turns. A 5th wheel roller will allow the hitch to roll backward, providing enough clearance between the trailer overhang and the truck cab.

Does the truck have an OEM puck system?

If you own a truck from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Nissan or Ram, your truck bed may be equipped with a puck system (pictured). If your truck has a long bed with the puck system, select a CURT 5th wheel hitch with the appropriate OEM puck system legs. If your truck has a short bed with the puck system, select a CURT 5th wheel hitch with the appropriate OEM puck system roller or roller adapter.

Do you prefer permanent base rails?

If your truck does not have the OEM puck system, you will need to install 5th wheel rails. The traditional method for installing base rails is to use vehicle-specific under-bed brackets. First, select the custom under-bed brackets that fit your specific make and model, as well as a set of industry-standard base rails. Next, if you have a long-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with legs. If you have a short-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with a roller. Remember to always abide by the weight capacity of the lowest-rated towing component.

Would you like the option to easily remove the base rails?

Another 5th wheel mounting option is a gooseneck hitch. Using the CURT Double Lock EZr or Double Lock gooseneck and X5 adapter plate allows you to have a removable set of industry-standard 5th wheel base rails. First, select the Double Lock EZr gooseneck hitch kit that fits your specific make and model. Next, select the corresponding X5 adapter plate. Finally, if you have a long-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with legs. If you have a short-bed truck, select a 5th wheel hitch with a roller.

User questions & answers

Question: They say this hitch will not fit my 2011 F-250 superduty shortbed. Why not

Question: can I pull a 8760lb trailer with this hitch
Answer: Yes. I pull a 11,000 LB trailer with my hitch. The hitch is rated for 16,000 LBS Most important is can your vehicle handle the weight? and also be sure the hitch height is set properly for your trailer's hitch height!
Question: I have existing rails in my Silverado for a reese slider. Will I also need to purchase the pull pin kit along with the hitch
Answer: No. Reese has always included the pull pin kit (58053) with the purchase of any fifth wheel hitch they offer.
Question: What all do i need to buy wiyh this? What all comes with it
Answer: You will need the bed rails

User questions & answers

Question: the 3300 in new ford setts too high adjusted all the way down and hitch pin up do they make shorter adjustment arms
Answer: I have mine at the lowest setting,so I can use my sliding cover and I have about 5 inches above my bed, slider wouldn't help I think, just make sure with ur box, ur fifthwheel is high enough to clear the box..
Question: what hitch and means of attachments do I need for my 2000 F350 ford long bed truck
Answer: This is for Ford equipped with the factory puck system, and they did not make that in 2004, or you would have to buy the under bed mounting system. So no this will not work on your truck
Question: I have a long bed f350 with a Weathergaurd Saddlebox 117 30" toolbox, will i need a slider to back the trailer or will it clear with the rigid hitch
Answer: My answer is the same as the other folks. It comes with pins to hook it to the bed mounted rails which are purchased separately to fit your bed and style of attachment to that bed. Some bolt to the bed and others use factory mounted puck systems. It depends upon your individual truck and preference.
Question: Will this work in a 2004 Ford F250 Super duty
Answer: My truck had a Reese fifth wheel rated at 15,000. I unpinned and placed my 24,000 Curt right in the existing rails. No modifications.

Question: Will this hitch fit a 2016 ram 3500 long bed dually
Answer: If you have the tow prep or RamBox Cargo Management System or Models w/Air Suspension no it will not. And it will require bracket upgrade 58520
Question: will this hitch fit my 2011 dodge ram 1500 with crewcab and 5and half foot box
Answer: I don't believe so. I think you need a sliding hitch for the 5 1/2 foot box. That way the trailer will not hit the cab.
Question: Will this hitch fit a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 6 ft bed
Answer: You should use a slider with your short bed, and some rams require extra, depends on cab style.
Question: Will this 5th wheel hitch fit 2006 dodge 2500 short wheel base truck
Answer: You need to consider the 5th wheel you'll be turning and cutting to back the unit, and turn corners. You have to consider that a short bed truck has a "special slide rail kit". The 15K pretains to the weight of the trailer/fully loaded. if you don't get the slide rail you run the chance of hitting the top of your truck cab. I've got a long box but this is what i've been told about the short boxes. The rail kit in this picture allows you to take the hitch out of your box by removing 4 pins, but the rails stay bolted in.There are some helpful videos on the web. They charge approx $400.00 to $500.00 to install these units. I installed my own but i have acess to the special tools for the install. You'll also need a brake controller. So the hitch would probably work, but you need to get a slider rail kit.The hitch itself has some adjustment up& down and so should the tongue on the trailor. There are other factors to consider when installing these hitches, rear shocks, rear springs, tires with proper load rating, and steering stabilizers to name a few.Installing these hitch/rail kits takes the better part of a day.If you have a bedliner you'll have to take it out or cut slots in it. So a slide rail kit or a super glide kit.As far as a short wheel base i don't know if that matters, you can always beef up the suspensionby adding leaf springs and heavy duty shocks & over load springs. Hope this helps, good luck.

Based on 8 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The CURT A16 5th wheel hitch excels in easy operation and stable, quiet 5th wheel towing. It does this with two key features: a single-throw handle and a patented head design. The single-throw handle only needs to be pulled once when coupling and uncoupling. It is designed to self-reset to the ready-to-couple position after uncoupling, allowing for fewer steps while hooking up your trailer. The patented head of the A16 features a cast yoke with poly-torsion inserts as well as interlocking jaws to create stability for your truck and trailer. These components allow the A16 to suppress shock and vibrations and reduce any additional noise coming from your trailer. In addition to its single-throw handle and cast yoke head, this 16K 5th wheel hitch comes with a three-position coupling indicator. The indicator is visible from the cab of your pickup truck and eliminates the need to get in and out of the truck cab to check the connection while coupling or uncoupling. The A16 also has an extra wide head to make coupling even easier, one-pin head removal to make it simple to move the hitch, and a GTW rating of 16,000 lbs. to tow a variety of 5th wheel trailers. Like the other CURT A-series hitches, the A16 is coated with a durable carbide powder coat finish. This particular A16 hitch comes with a set of CURT OEM puck system 5th wheel legs, designed to be mounted on a Ford long-bed pickup with the truck bed puck system. Using a set of quarter-turn anchors, the legs quickly and easily drop into the pucks, instantly mounting the A16 hitch and equipping the truck for 5th wheel towing. The anchors feature an adjustable design to perfectly lock the hitch into place and eliminate any chucking noises, and the legs are finished in a durable carbide black powder coat to be highly resistant to scratches, rust and UV damage. These legs are only intended to fit the Ford puck system and cannot be installed without it.
