User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work with adaptive cruise control |
Answer: | The unit will fit, but you need to check to see what cable is correct for your Toyota. The cable will attach to the controller, and connect it to a trailer brake port usually found under the dash of your rig. The Tekonsha site has a tool that will help you determine what connector you need for your vehicle. Then you can order the connector cable on Amazon. |
Question: | I have a 4 way plug spliced into a 7 way plug that does my lights etc for what will be my brake pin csn i run a live 12 volt feed to plug |
Answer: | When your order it you put in what kind of vehicle you have |
Question: | Is it possible to use in a rental environment, where each user downloads the app for a rental, uses the receiver and then the next user does the same |
Answer: | John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway. |
Question: | For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees |
Answer: | You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller. |

CURT Electrical Trailer Brake Controllers
CURT offers several different trailer brake controller models to provide you with a solution that fits your unique towing setup and budget. We carry time-based and inertia-based or proportional brake controllers.
All CURT trailer brake controllers are designed for easy installation. Most use our quick plug harnesses, and each comes with its own set of features and benefits.
For a helpful guide in selecting a brake controller, see below.
Two types of brake controllers:
CURT electric brake controllers fall into one of two categories: inertia-based or time-based. These refer to the method of activation used by the brake controller. Both types are safe and effective for stopping a trailer. However, depending on your needs, one may be preferred over the other.
Inertia-based
Inertia-based or proportional trailer brake controllers use an electronic mechanism, called an accelerometer, to detect the momentum of the vehicle-trailer combination while braking. The controller accentuates the trailer brakes in proportion to the momentum, allowing for a smooth, highly efficient stop.
Time-based
Time-based activation is less complex than inertia-based. When stopping, a time-based brake controller accentuates the trailer brakes based on whatever gain setting is input by the driver. Although simple in operation, time-based trailer brake controllers are effective and provide a more budget-friendly option.
Heavy-duty towing
If you are towing a heavy trailer or cargo, an inertia-based brake controller will provide superior control to make smoother stops and to put less strain on your vehicle.
Light-duty towing
If you’re towing a simple boat trailer or popup camper, a time-based trailer brake controller may be sufficient. CURT time-based controllers are easily adjustable for varying loads.
Frequent towing
If you’re planning to tow often, an inertia-based brake controller is recommended. The sophisticated operation will help prolong the life of your vehicle and trailer.
Occasional towing
If you only plan to tow a few times a year, such as for family camping trips during the summer, a time-based brake controller is an effective and budget-conscious option.

User questions & answers
Question: | What adapter cable is required for a 2002 Suburban 3.5l 4x |
Answer: | it's not so much an issue of fitting as much as making sure you get the right wiring harness for your truck which is normally sold separate from this unit. So just do a search for your trucks harness. You can even go to the manufacturers website and look up the right harness model number then search for it on Amazon. Great unit you'll love it. |
Question: | I have a 2013 silverado 1500 lt. has factory towing package. do i need an additional harness? how do i found out which one if so |
Answer: | Manufacture states power draw is so low (3.6 milliamps when not in use) that it would take 3-4 months to drain battery if allowed to sit without starting. Then would be the time they would recommend disconnecting unit from vehicle wiring. |
Question: | Does it have a digital read out to tell you what degree it's currently adjusted to |
Answer: | Most electric brakes will not "engage" when driving in reverse. The magnets will still grab, yes, but the camming action that forces the shoes to the drums is reversed and thus should not cause any issues. |
Question: | is this unit "proportional" or "timed |
Answer: | It comes with a pigtail that plugs into back of unit and stranded wires on the other end to hook up to the car. If you have a newer vehicle that is prewired for electric brakes, you can purchase a pigtail to plug into the prewired side plug. My vehicle came with that pigtail in the glove box when I bought it. |

Product description
It takes a lot of power to stop a moving trailer, especially when that trailer is hauling a heavy load. On RVs, flatbeds, livestock trailers and many other oversize haulers, manufacturers typically install trailer brakes to assist the tow vehicle in bringing such a massive amount of weight to a halt. But it takes more than a good set of brakes to make quick, efficient stops. It takes precision and the right amount of control. Discovery is a time-based brake controller, meaning it applies increasing brake pressure the longer your foot is on the brake pedal. This pressure is based on the gain setting and sensitivity adjustment set by the user. Discovery has a digital display for easy monitoring and the ability to manage up to four axles at a time. It mounts at any angle, anywhere in your vehicle and comes with an automatic power level adjustment feature to ensure you can stay better focused on your driving and spend less time worry about your trailer brakes. All CURT brake controls are designed to work with quick plugs so that they can readily plug into your vehicle's original equipment socket. They also include a mounting bracket and hardware for easy installation. A brake controller should be mounted somewhere on the dash of your vehicle, and we recommend putting it below the steering wheel, either on the right or left side of the steering column. This way the control will not block your view when driving, but it will remain accessible and visible when adjustment is needed.
- RELIABLE SAFETY. The Discovery electric trailer brake controller offers safe, dependable operation, increasing trailer brake pressure as you depress the vehicle brake pedal and bringing the vehicle and trailer to a smooth stop
- EASY TO USE. This trailer brake controller features an easy-to-read, digital display to monitor brake operation. It also has a simple, reliable design with no internal moving parts and no leveling required
- POWERFUL. The simple controls of the Discovery brake controller enable powerful brake operation, featuring a manual brake slider button, an adjustable power toggle and adjustable ramp time
- VERSATILE. You can use this electric trailer brake controller on virtually any trailer with 1 to 4 axles (2 to 8 brakes). Compatible with low-volt, PWM, ABS, cruise control and electric over hydraulic
- SIMPLE SETUP. This electric brake controller quickly plugs into your vehicle using a CURT vehicle-specific quick plug harness (sold separately). It comes with an adjustable mounting bracket and can be mounted at any angle

Product description
There are several different types of connectors used to supply power from a tow vehicle's electrical system to a trailer's wiring system. Some trailers only need the bare essentials -- running lights, brake lights and turn signals -- while others require a connection for reverse lights, electric brakes and auxiliary power. With connectors ranging from simple to complex, it may be the case that the connection between your vehicle and your trailer is not a perfect match. For example, your truck may be equipped with a 6-way round socket, but your trailer may have a 4-way flat plug. For this very common problem, CURT offers a quick and simple solution in the form of an electrical adapter. An adapter is an electrical device that allows a connection to be made between a mismatched trailer plug and vehicle socket. It easily plugs in your vehicle's electrical socket and usually requires no additional wiring. CURT offers an array of adapters to accommodate most types of plugs and sockets, including 4-way flat, 4-way round, 5-way flat, 6-way round, 7-way RV blades and more. This electrical adapter is designed to adapt a 4-way flat vehicle socket to fit a 7-way RV blade trailer plug. It also includes wiring and electrical components to splice in and route a trailer brake controller connection from the cab of the vehicle. All CURT wiring and electrical products come with a one-year limited warranty to give you the assurance you need to tow with confidence.
- BRAKE CONTROLLER CONNECTION. This trailer wiring adapter makes it easy to add wiring for a trailer brake controller. It plugs into a 4-way flat connector and provides a standard 7-way RV blade socket with brake controller wiring components
- WEATHER-RESISTANT. This trailer wiring harness adapter comes with a spring-loaded dust cover for the 7-pin wiring socket to protect the terminals from water, dirt and corrosion. The wiring harness is also well-protected with the included slit loom sleeve
- STANDARD CONNECTION. This trailer hitch wiring adapter plugs into any standard 4-way flat and can be used to connect the taillights, brake lights, reverse lights, turn signals, trailer brakes and auxiliary power (some splicing required)
- EASY TO INSTALL. This 4-pin to 7-pin trailer adapter with brake controller wiring comes ready to plug into your vehicle or trailer wiring with minimal splicing required
- DURABLE CONSTRUCTION. For long-lasting use and a reliable connection, the housing of this trailer harness adapter is made from durable black plastic that will never rust or corrode

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this harness fit 2017 Silverado 1500 pickup |
Answer: | It fit my 2018 |
Question: | Will this plug into a 2015 Chevy Tahoe |
Answer: | It works on our 2015 Suburban. |
Question: | Bought a curt 51110 brake controler ,Still having trouble finding the plug and play harnes to fit 2018 3500 chevy exspress |
Answer: | I used this for my 2008 Suburban. It was not plug and play. I cut off one end and tied it into the harness under the steering wheel. For some reason Chevrolet stopped installing connectors on the provided harness after 2006. I’m guessing they did the same thing on other models. Curt actually makes a connecting harness without a connector for the specific vehicle that is a couple of dollars cheaper. I bought this and cut off the end connector because it was easier to get and I didn’t care about the price difference. Look under the dash for a group of wires that don’t have a terminal connector. My wires were even labeled. |
Question: | Will the 51451 work on a 2016 1500 Silverado |
Answer: | That's what I put it on. Worked just fine |
