13 best truck bed coatings
Truck bed coatings are specialized coatings applied to the bed of a truck to protect it from wear and tear, corrosion, and other forms of damage. These coatings serve multiple purposes and are particularly important for trucks used for heavy-duty work, like hauling heavy equipment, tools, or construction materials.
Here are some key points about truck bed coatings:
Types of Coatings:
- Spray-On Bedliners: These are typically made of polyurethane or polyurea. They are applied using a high-pressure spray gun, creating a durable, textured surface.
- Drop-In Bedliners: These are rigid, pre-formed liners made from materials like plastic or rubber. They're relatively easy to install and remove.
- Bed Mats: These are thick rubber mats that cover the bed floor and tailgate. They're less permanent but provide decent protection.
Protection:
- Impact Resistance: A good bed coating can protect the truck bed from dents, scratches, and impacts from heavy loads.
- Corrosion Resistance: It forms a barrier that protects against rust and corrosion caused by exposure to water, chemicals, and other elements.
Traction:
- The textured surface of spray-on bedliners can provide extra traction, reducing the likelihood of cargo shifting during transportation.
Customization:
- Spray-on bedliners can be customized to match the color of the truck, giving it a seamless appearance.
Durability:
- A properly applied bed coating can last for many years without showing significant signs of wear.
Maintenance:
- Truck bed coatings are relatively low maintenance. They can be easily cleaned with water and mild soap.
Installation:
- Professional installation is recommended, especially for spray-on bedliners. The surface needs to be properly prepared, and the coating needs to be applied evenly.
Cost:
- The cost of a truck bed coating can vary depending on the type and brand. Spray-on bedliners are typically more expensive than drop-in liners or bed mats.
DIY Options:
- While some bed coatings can be applied by individuals, it's often advised to have them done by professionals to ensure proper adhesion and coverage.
Warranty:
- Many bed liner manufacturers offer warranties that cover defects or damages.
In summary, truck bed coatings are essential for protecting the bed of a truck, especially for heavy-duty use. They come in various types, with spray-on bedliners being the most popular for their durability and customization options. Proper installation and maintenance are crucial for ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the coating.

Question: | This product it's water safe after it dries |
Answer: | Metallic silver? Doubt it...just the color.Hi-Heat CoatingTo finish off a clean and well-protected Exhaust Insulating Wrap application it is recommended to use the Hi-Heat Coating. The coating will protect the wrap from abrasion and harmful liquid spills. Extra resins and binders toughen the surface, extend the life of wrap by protecting it from friction, and seals the pores to minimize the penetration of harmful liquids. Hi-Heat Coating can handle direct and continuous heat of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit when used with ThermoTec Exhaust Insulating Products. The coating also works excellent as a paint directly on metal surfaces and can handle continuous temperatures up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. |
Question: | I ordered the application kit, and two quarts of the product...do I just mix and use or is there an additive or catalist that must be mixed in it |
Answer: | No, it will look like shiny silver paint. |
Question: | Can this be applied on top of the original paint |
Answer: | After you wrap. |
Question: | Can this be used on wood |
Answer: | Yes. According to DEI it's safe to use on all exhaust system alloys except for actual Titanium exhaust systems, which is heller expensive and not common. All but 1 header I've put on my 4 cars( 2 V-6's, an I-4 & turboed I-4) and the 5 Jeeps(1 w/old 4.2L I-6, 3 with 4.0L HO I-6, & a 4.7L V8) were made of either 14 or 16 gauge T-304 Stainless Steel, only had 1 that wasn't & was a mild steel(never use 1 made of anything but SS or Titanium!!!). Ever since that header, I vowed I'd only use a Stainless Steel header from then on, lol. It cracked just like the plagued/known to crack factory I-6's exhaust manifolds, it just took about 7K-10K miles more(so not worth the $). Most headers I've seen(like 95%) are stainless steel anyway, and so are many aftermarket cat & axle back exhaust systems. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this be painted or coloured readily |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | How much prep work has to be done before application |
Answer: | You just have to stir it up and use. No additives to mix in. |
Question: | Does this product require a hardener? Can it be reused after opening |
Answer: | Ye. but You still have to sand it a little so you can apply it correctly. |
Question: | How well will this hold up for the interior of a jeep? Thanks |
Answer: | Someone else answered “this paint is designed for metal”, but as an industrial painter, I would argue that this paint would bond amazingly well to wood. The porous nature of wood along with the thick and textured nature of this paint would create a very good mechanical bond when applied. Obviously some woods are more porous than others, so it may adhere to a soft wood like pine much better than a very dense wood like teak. Porosity aside, if you sand the wood very well with coarse sandpaper like 80 grit, you would still achieve an excellent bond. I would not use any sort of primer on the wood prior to application, however, don’t be surprised if the wood soaks up some the initial first coat. Cheers |

User questions & answers
Question: | How hard of a shell does this form? I'm thinking of using to coat the bottom of my kayak and wondering if it will hold up against hitting rocks |
Answer: | I don't think so. I did a 5'x8' trailer bed, no sides or tailgate, and I used every drop of the 1 gallon can I bought. |
Question: | Will this be enough to paint a metal bumper ? Already have it etched |
Answer: | yes you can. I just redid the bed of my truck. used Lacquer thinner to prep it, then did 2 new coats on the bed walls and did 2 new coats on the bed. I use this stuff for everything and have found that if you paint over (Rattle cans) it as it tacks up, you get a nice glossy finish that lasts. The UV on the Herculiner isn't that good, But if you paint over it as it tacks it gives it the UV protection it is lacking. Did my sons off-road bumper, rock rails, and the entire interior floor 3 years ago still looks great. |
Question: | How many cans would I need to cover a mini van? Body, undercarriage, hubcaps, and floor inside |
Answer: | Two different mediums and two different application processes. Line-X is a professional / dealer applied finish... whereas Herculiner is a DIY product. I'm a firm believer that Herculiner is one of, if not, THE best DIY liner products out on the market. Better than Line-X? Maybe not. Best bang for the buck? Yes. Follow the directions and be critical of the prep process. Herculiner will serve you very well and turns out great. |
Question: | Is 4L enough to do the inside cab of a full size bronco and large off road front bumper |
Answer: | One gallon will easily put two heavy (rolled on) coats on a six foot pickup bed! |

User questions & answers
Question: | is the texture really coarse or can it be made into the texture you want |
Answer: | I'm almost positive that it can be painted once it has dried and has cured. It dries very hard. As far as coloring I don't think that would be possible. |
Question: | Do you need a primer |
Answer: | Not much ... wash - dry - rough sand. This has a rust stopper too so some remaining solid rusty surface is fine - but be sure to remove any loose rust and sand well. |
Question: | how warm does it have to be to put it on |
Answer: | Does not require a hardener. Not sure about the shelf life. It’s not a very big can. I had some scratches and wear so I used the entire can to recover the bed. It was barely enough to do the job. |
Question: | how much surface does 1 can of this duplicolor bedliner spray cover |
Answer: | I used it on the interior and roll cage of my off road truck and it works great. Lay down a couple of coats (I did 4) and good to go. It withstands rock scratches, tree scraps for the most part, and best of all I can just wash it out. It's not rough like rhino liner or herculiner it has a relatively smooth finish. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will 6 cans cover all the painted surface and roof of a golf cart |
Answer: | I would say 'No'. I think you would end up with a big mess all over your engine with a lot of cleanup! This isn't heat rated to my knowledge, but from my experience, I wouldn't do it. Hope this helps you out. |
Question: | How big of an area does it cover |
Answer: | No gasoline doesn't affect it |
Question: | I’m building a rat rod. It’s all patinated so there is surface rust. I want to coat the undercarriage. Do you think it will stick |
Answer: | I'd say so but the quality of product itself is questionable. Get the brand name stuff instead. This stuff is no good. Gets very brittle and chips right off. Waste of money and time. |
Question: | Can i make another paint color after the coating?? its compatible |
Answer: | Used it to spray on our downriggers used for fishing. They are aluminum. I did rough it up a bit. It has worked so far. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you get it in white |
Answer: | I used on the lumber rack for my truck following all the steps and wouldn't recommend you to use it. It doesn't stick to metal very well .I don't think would last under water. |
Question: | If applying on plastic fenders (abs / urathane) does it require a primer / base coat |
Answer: | Yes, this will be enough material for a pick up truck bumper. |
Question: | Is this sprayable with a bed liner gun |
Answer: | Per many hours of YouTube videos that were watched before I did my truck cap you should need approx 8 bottles to put the proper amount of coats for the exterior. As for the interior I would say about the same or maybe a little less depending on what your coating. You put it on in thin coats and once mixed the bottles are only good for about 30 mins so you have to be fast and have your area prepped for paint before mixing. Great product. Love the look and texture. |
Question: | What's the coverage area per gallon |
Answer: | I used 3 full quarts on the inside of my CJ7. I am happy with the product and application plus I have a quart for touch up or adding to high wear areas |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this stick to aluminum |
Answer: | No primer needed. Just use the scuff pad provided in the kit or sand paper or anything to rough up the paint and apply. I used an electric sander on my truck and it stuck much better than the scuff pad allowed it to |
Question: | Can this be top coated with urethane paint |
Answer: | We did not use it for the truck bed but for a wood bridge so my horses would not slip going over it. It was warm when we put it on and has lasted fantastic with them walking on it every day. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what color is the cans blue or black I know that it's a dumb question but it does matter |
Answer: | Depends how thick you spray it, expect anywhere from 4 sq ft. to 10 sq ft. I got a case of 6 and painted a front bumper and two full length side steps. |
Question: | what color is the cans blue or black I know that it's a dumb question but it does matter |
Answer: | IDK. IT IS NOT SMOOTH. BEST TRUCK LINER IS BEDRUGZ. WASHABLE REMOVABLE AND CAN TRANSFER TO A NEW TRUCK. ATTACHES WITH HOOK AND LOOP. I USED THIS TO PAINT BUMPERS AND SIDE CLADDING ON JEEP OFF ROAD VEHICLE IN SPRAY FORM. ALSO I USED THIS TO PAINT FLOOR BOARDS IN 1974 BRONCO HOLDING UP AFTER 10 YEARS. PROBABLY NOT STURDY ENOUGH FOR A BED USED TO HAULING AGGREGATE OR SHOVELING. IF YOU ARE SELLING AN OLD TRUCK THIS WOULD LOOK GOOD AND ADD TO RESALE VALUE. THERE ARE BETTER UNDERCOATING PRODUCTS I RECOMMEND LEAK SEAL AS SEEN ON TV |

Question: | does it peel easy with any knicks |
Answer: | The texture is Medium at best not coarse but it is 3 times as thick as the store bought spray cans, I did my entire bed of the 67 el camino with one can, it sprays on quite well with the optional spray gun and an air compressor. |
