12 best radiator stop leaks
Radiator stop leaks are products designed to temporarily seal small leaks or cracks in a vehicle's radiator or cooling system. They fall under the category of sealants and are used in the automotive industry to address minor leaks in radiators, hoses, and other components of a vehicle's cooling system.
These stop leaks typically come in liquid or powder form and are added to the radiator or cooling system. Once inside the system, the stop leak product circulates with the coolant and settles at the point of leakage. When the product comes into contact with air, it reacts and forms a temporary seal at the leak site, preventing coolant from escaping.
It's important to note that radiator stop leaks are considered a temporary solution and should not be seen as a permanent fix. They are intended to provide a quick fix or a temporary measure to get a vehicle to a repair shop for proper maintenance or repair. If a leak is severe or if it persists despite using a stop leak product, it's essential to consult a professional mechanic for a thorough inspection and appropriate repairs.
When using a radiator stop leak, it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and use the correct amount for the specific application. Using too much stop leak can potentially cause further issues or clog the cooling system.
Overall, radiator stop leaks are a handy tool for addressing minor leaks in a vehicle's cooling system, providing a short-term solution to keep the vehicle operational until a more comprehensive repair can be undertaken.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to flush the cooling system before using this product if I had used bar’s tablet? I am choosing between these two since the leak is small |
Answer: | You do not have to flush the system, in fact you may flush it after to put in the Bars Leak and run for a couple hundred miles to make sure your leak is sealed. |
Question: | will this work on the head also |
Answer: | Try it...it's inexpensive. Whether it works depends on the specifics of your problem. I tried it on a 4 cylinder BMW with a new head and profile gasket and a slow leak. It worked great. |
Question: | can it be used in a Tahoe plastic tank |
Answer: | i used it in my volvo which has a plastic expansion tank and no problems. it won't fix big leaks but if you're losing just a little coolant over time and can't find the leak this is the stuff to use! |
Question: | My radiator leaking from the seam. Slightly overheating. Will this seal at the seam |
Answer: | It should, depending on how big the leak/crack is,the one on my semi truck was dripping big, half a gallon a day,I was worried bc that s a $2,000.00 repair,I bought it not expecting any results, since I had previously used Bars leak (the small silver bottle) and didn t work,so this was a prayer and a last hope, 5,000 mls later and not a leak, not extra coolant added,it is liquid aluminum,so it bonds to wherever the leak is and forms a sealing coat...I think of it as welding from the inside...I hope it works for you as it did for me,it really was an answer to prayer...I know I m a bit dramatic but it was.PS,try to follow recommended amount or as close as recommended, not much less and not much more,I used 2 bottles on a 11 gal radiator.God bless. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Liquid Aluminum is specifically designed to be directly added to the cooling system without having to flush out the antifreeze. It also can be used in water alone. But if using in water, it is recommended that another bottle of Liquid Aluminum be added to the system once antifreeze is installed.
Will it work in the new extended life antifreeze?
Yes, Liquid Aluminum works with all types of coolant including yellow, orange, pink, red, blue and green silicate based and non-silicate based OAT/HOAT antifreeze and/or water.
How long does it take to see results?
We recommend you drive/idle the vehicle for 10 to 20 minutes. In most cases the leak will be sealed instantly, but others will require up to 20 minutes. If the leak is not sealed in 20 minutes, a second application may be required or mechanical repair may be needed.

User questions & answers
Question: | can you mix this with barstop if you all ready put that in the radiator |
Answer: | I did mix this with Irontite All Weather Seal. Did the K-seal first. Irontite a week later. Just to be sure. Since they both said it can remain in the system. Two weeks, still good. |
Question: | Can you use this in a 2013 escape |
Answer: | Unless specifically told to use no heating system sealants I have no reason I can think of you can't use it. I used some but sparingly until it got the job done. Its a little bottle but still have half left. It's been okay for about 6 months now. |
Question: | Does it discolor the antifreeze? Thanks |
Answer: | Unfortunately I can't say. I have a GM vehicle that uses the orangish color engine coolant and it and this product are so close in color it's hard to say if it would discolor the usual green-colored coolant found in non-GM vehicles. The other challenge is that I can only look at the coolant through an overflow reservoir and it's so dark when I look inside (I have to use an LED flashlight to see it adequately) that it would be hard to tell if there was any discoloration. |
Question: | will this work for leakey gaskets |
Answer: | This is "liquid glass" that dries rock hard and will seal your head gasket leak (its been used in farm equipment for over 75 years and is WELL proven to work, and it was discovered over a hundred years ago), but you MUST perform a simple test. Start your vehicle, let it idle for 45 minutes straight. If the temperature gauge does not indicate that your engine is overheating, then this product will most likely work. No overheating at an idle for 45 minutes MEANS that the head gasket leak is still small enough to be filled by this liquid glass. Shake the container for 30 seconds, put the liquid in your COOLANT system, drive for an hour (or other words, operate at normal temperature, especially if its an aluminum block with cast iron heads), and then let it sit for 24-48 hours (the longest time is better). This sitting time allows the liquid glass to harden completely through. If it overheats then, it most likely its a thermostat or water pump or lower radiator hose sucking shut under load (sometimes the upper one also) or radiator or radiator fan or leaking core plug or leaking coolant storage unit OR your ENGINE OIL is very low from leaking (completely different problem that has nothing to do with the coolant system, but much to do with the cooling of the engine also) or heat indicator gauge or it still could be a blown head gasket, because the hole is just too big for the sealant to seal it up OR the head gasket BLOWS in another area after you have sealed up the first hole with the coolant sealant you added (that's why you should add it three times three different bottles of liquid glass over three months as I will mention below, that way, if it does blow in another area you will most likely SEAL that area also). But buy this and try it even if your vehicle fails the 45 minute test after 10 minutes. Sometimes, it will still seal the leak, or at least slow it down. Also, you can add this once a month for three months, and maybe that will work also (this gives you a month to see how the car performs under various conditions, and for the reason I just mentioned above). If you need the car to last for just a short while (month to six months) this can be a quick fix to hold you over until you can sell the car (under buyer be where conditions) or get it to the shop when you have the money. $15 and a few minutes of your time OR the mechanic, you have to decide. Good luck. I'm a retired mechanic with two degrees in Diesel mechanics and I ran a shop for a year.... :) |

Permanent Coolant Leak Repair with K-Seal
Coolant leaks don’t have to result in costly repair bills – simply add K-Seal to your coolant system for a quick and permanent fix. K-Seal is trusted by millions of customers worldwide, and the only coolant leak repair fluid carried by the AA, the UK’s largest roadside repair company.
K-Seal couldn’t be simpler to use. K-Seal’s unique formula will seek out holes and cracks, and permanently seal them, with no adverse impact on the efficiency of your engine cooling.
Coolant System Sealer
Once the crack or hole has been located, the microfibers instantly begin to mesh together within the gap, building a seal literally fiber by fiber to stop the coolant leaking through the gap.
The particles in our K-Seal products are very precisely designed to be large enough to repair holes up to 0.635mm in size but deliberately small enough to never block any passageways or tubes within the cooling system, including those inside the heater core and radiator.
Once the microfibers have sealed and fixed the leak, a combination of exposure to either the external atmosphere or the gases within the combustion chamber and the heat within the cooling system and engine causes the K-Seal formula to cure. This results in an extremely strong and permanent seal able to withstand even the high pressures from the combustion chamber. This is how K-Seal Ultimate is able to repair head gasket failures, even where the cooling system is being over-pressurized exhaust gases entering the system
Common Coolant Leaks
K-Seal can deal with all of these leaks and more, as long as they are identified as early as possible. It is easy to use – simply shake it and pour it into the coolant mixture and it will work automatically.

Question: | What are the beads inside for? Can they be poured into the radiator |
Answer: | The beads break down in the system and contain most of whats in the product to seal . ..... So yes, please pour the entire container into the vehicle. Great question... Thank you Eric |
Question: | mi radiador no tiene tapa, puedo echar el sellador en el tanque de reserva |
Answer: | Si! |
Question: | My car does not have a cap on the top of the radiator as the coolant gets added through the overflow. How would I add this to my car |
Answer: | Thank you for your question, and for considering Bar's Leaks to help with a cooling system leak. The product you are asking about - Bar's Leaks Heavy Duty Radiator Stop Leak (part number PLT11) - is designed to be installed directly into the radiator. If you don't have access to the radiator through a radiator cap, you can remove the top hose where it attaches to the radiator and install the product in through the hose. Be sure to shake the product well before installing. If installing this way is not an option for you, we would suggest you consider our Radiator Stop Leak Tablets (part number HDC) instead. These pellets can be crumbled up and installed in the overflow reservoir, as long as it is pressurized. Please note: Cooling systems that are dirty or partially clogged should be flushed before using any cooling system stop leak products. If you have any other questions or would like additional information, please feel free to call our Tech Support team at 1-800-345-6572. We are here to assist you Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, Eastern time. |
Question: | does 2001 ford crown vic come from factory with stop leak in coolent |
Answer: | I don't know. But I used this on my 2006 Ford Explorer 4.6L V-8 and it was useless. I had a very small leak in the radiator and after using this stop leak, the hole blew open a week later and all the radiator fluid came pouring out. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can you use this on indoor plumbing I have a pin hole in leak in copper pipe under the slab of my house |
Answer: | I personally don't think it would work. Stop leak in a radiator has endless chances to stop the leak because the coolant-water continually recirculates. I don't think one flow by would be enough. I have had your problem. Trying to solder the pin hole is difficult if there is water in the pipe. I would clean around the hole with steel wool. I would force a small copper wire in the hole just about even with the hole to stop any flow of water. Then, I would solder over the wire. |
Question: | how many one should I use ? I've tried 4 packs of a similar products and engine is still smoking |
Answer: | Only 1 .... if you have used 4 others your leak is too large and with all that product in there you will need a professional coolant system flush and repair of leak |
Question: | Does it work with plastic radiators small leak |
Answer: | Not sure. Mine is metal. |
Question: | Does it work for heater core leak |
Answer: | I would have to say it depends on the size of the opening of the leak. If it is a very small leak, the perm-o-seal will work the same in the heater coil as the radiator. If you can't see the opening, then you will have to estimate by the amount of the leak. If it is rather slow, then for the price of perm-o-seal, it's worth a try. |

It’s part of life: older cars, trucks, vans, SUVs and even RVs can develop larger leaks in their radiators and intake manifolds. If you’ve tried regular stop leak products, you know they are not powerful enough to stop these larger leaks. If you visit the service center down the street, you know just how expensive it can be to repair an intake gasket leak through a mechanic. Isn’t there a better way? There should be, which is why Bar’s Leaks designed the Liquid Copper Block Seal Intake & Radiator Stop Leak. This one-step sealer was designed to quickly and safely stop these overwhelming leaks. When you’re experiencing a mild to moderate intake gasket seal leak, discover the fast, effective, inexpensive power of liquid copper. What does it do? Our formula permanently repairs larger leaks in radiators, intake manifolds and gaskets, heater cores, blocks, heads and freeze plugs. It contains an antifreeze-compatible sodium silicate liquid glass formula, so no draining of the cooling system is required. Not to mention, it will not harm the cooling system when used properly. Question: | Can i use this product to stop leak on my honda element 2003 engine block? the engine block has a small leak |
Answer: | Thank you for your question and for considering Bar's Leaks Liquid Copper Block Seal Intake & Radiator Stop Leak (part number 1109). This one step formula was developed to repair larger leaks in radiators, intake manifolds & gaskets, heater cores, blocks, heads and freeze plugs, so it should help you with a small leak in your Honda Element. Please note, though, that cooling systems that are dirty or partially clogged should be flushed before using. If you haven't had a chemical cooling system flush performed on your vehicle in the last four years, you might consider doing so now. Flushing with water will remove any loose sediment in the cooling system, but if there is any scale built up, it would take a chemical flush to dissolve and remove it, giving our product the best possible chance to stop the leak. If you have any questions, or we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact our Tech Support team at 1-800-345-6572. Question: | Can this help with a 5.3l gm engine with the bad cylinder head castings? i'm saving for a replacement engine, just need this one to last a while |
Answer: | Thanks for your question, and for considering Bar's Leaks to help with your vehicle's needs. The product you are asking about - Bar's Leaks Block Seal Intake & Radiator Stop Leak is a great product for repairing larger leaks in radiators, intake manifolds & gaskets, heater cores, blocks, heads and freeze plugs. However, if your vehicle is showing signs of head gasket failure due to the bad castings you refer to, we would suggest one of our head gasket products, such as Head Gasket Fix (part number 1111), which is very successful in sealing leaks as long as your vehicle can run 20 minutes or longer without overheating or needing to add coolant. If your vehicle is unable to run for 20 minutes without overheating, but can run for at least 15 minutes, we recommend our strongest head gasket stop leak - Head Seal Blown Head Gasket Repair (part number HG-1). For best results, these products should be installed into a clean cooling system, following the installation instructions and proper dosage. If you are unsure how clean your cooling system is, or you haven't had it chemically flushed in the last three to four years, we recommend doing so before installing any stop leak products. If you have any other questions, or we can be of further assistance, please feel free to call our Tech Support team at 1-800-345-6572. We are here to assist you Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, Eastern time. |
Question: | heater core leak fixed |
Answer: | The label on the lower right does show Heater Core. So this could work since coolant is being pumped through the heater core to heat the cabin of a vehicle. |
Question: | Will this help to stop a block leak where the water pump connects to the cooling system |
Answer: | No. This will only help with small leaks. As temp fix. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, unlike other copper stop leak products, Liquid Copper One Step sealer contains an antifreeze compatible sodium silicate formula, so draining of the cooling system is not required as long as manufactures recommendations are followed. It also can be used in water alone however, a second bottle of Liquid Copper is recommended to be added to the system once antifreeze is installed.
Do I need to drain my cooling system after using Liquid Copper?
No, this product is designed to be left in the cooling system to protect from future leaks.
What are the dosage recommendations?
Use 1 (one) bottle for regular size cooling systems, this covers most 4, 6, 8 and 10 cylinder engines. For small cooling systems, such as 4 cylinders with no air conditioning, use 1⁄2 (half) of bottle. For other small systems use approximately 3 ounces per gallon of cooling capacity. In larger systems, use 1 (one) bottle for every 6 gallons of cooling system capacity.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I have to keep using it or is it a one and done type of deal |
Answer: | It worked for me. 2005 impala v6. One bottle saved it from the crusher. Mechanics want 2000$usd for the replacement of head gaskets. The car ran badly for a while and still used some water but after a few drives it works fine. The check engine light even finally turned off. It was worth the price even just to avoid towing this again, but it keeps running! |
Question: | will it plug the heater core |
Answer: | I have a 1995 Honda Odyssey, 4 cylinders. Blown head gasket, puffs of steam out the tailpipe, small geyser from the radiator. Used Blue Devil, following all instructions, and about 80% better but still some steam out the tailpipe and smaller bubbles in the coolant. As per tech advice from Blue Devil I took out the spark plug from the offending chamber and ran for 50 minutes. I did this aggravation twice. Still leak. So I got this product, flushed the system using Prestone chemical flush, keep the thermostat out and then put in the Ba's Leak HG-1. I only used bout 40% of the bottle and diluted it about 3:1 with distilled water and antifreeze. Did this because it was so thick. Followed instructions, initial run was difficult because it was not circulating well and was running hot. But the second session went fine after top off. After the fourth cycle I looked into the running radiator and there were no more bubbles and no more steam out the back. Success! However, my heater core is clogged. No big deal as this is California. Question: can I eventually restore the heater core by back flushing the cooling system? I wouldn't do this till the Fall. In the past K Seal had pugged up my heater core and I recoverd most of the function by back flushing (Firestone, $120). |
Question: | Ok for ford 6.9 idi diesel ?Eng overheated-very slight combustion leak in cooling sys,no white smoke, oil clean. Is1 bottle enough for eng 8gal cap |
Answer: | yes also try engine restore to stop your combustion leak it works well with 6.9 idi my blow by was so bad it blew off the oil cap once but after engine restore 8 cylinder it actually brought the compression backup to factory only drawback is you must use it every oil change |

User questions & answers
Question: | Tried using alumaseal, which isn't working. will i need to flush the system before using the k-seal |
Answer: | I used the HD Truck bottle on my 1998 GEO Tracker ( used 1/3 of the bottle ) of K-Seal and it worked. I have used so many to no avail. To answer your question, I must have @ least 3 to 4 other sealers in my colling system when I added K-Seal. It's been almost a year & no adverse effects having not flushed my radiator. Should I have flushed the radiator & the system? Yes, I should have. |
Question: | Will this work with aluminum heads |
Answer: | It works equally well with cast iron or aluminum. Great Stuff. Not a long-term solution, but it will buy you a lot of time. |
Question: | how much do i need to pour in a diesel 1 ton cummins |
Answer: | You need this one bottle for a Dodge 3500 hd. I have this one bottle in my HD Freightliner 330hp MBZ engine hauling freight (54,000 lbs cap) 6 days a week and it stopped my coolant leak in the engine bay and heater core with no blockage and no. My opinion, Many reviews say products dont work BECAUSE most people dont take care of their equipment and their vehicles are old, high mileage and no maintenance done. None of the add to a tank products are as good as replacing with new parts but thats expensive, we get it. This may or may not fix your problem but its a low cost gamble with a high probability of success. Dont listen to the negative reviews. If the problem comes back, your damage was too far gone and in need of replacement anyway. |
Question: | Does it work on potentially warped heads |
Answer: | Probably not, but read on, and learn about all coolant leak problems if you want and how effective this product is....This bottle is enough for up to 12 cylinder engines. This will work for any type of coolant leak, if the leak is small. This will work on head gasket leaks also, read this 3 minute read on what to do if its a head gasket leak. Also, for for your information - This is "liquid glass" that dries rock hard and will seal your head gasket leak (its been used in farm equipment for over 75 years and is WELL proven to work, and it was discovered over a hundred years ago), but you MUST perform a simple test. Okay, start your vehicle, let it idle for 45 minutes straight. If it overheats then, it most likely its a thermostat or water pump or heater core or lower radiator hose sucking shut under load (sometimes the upper one also) or radiator or radiator fan or leaking core plug or leaking coolant storage unit OR your ENGINE OIL is very low from leaking (completely different problem that has nothing to do with the coolant system, but much to do with the cooling of the engine also) or heat indicator gauge or it still could be a blown head gasket, because the hole is just too big for the sealant to seal it up OR the head gasket BLOWS in another area after you have sealed up the first hole with the coolant sealant you added (that's why you should add it three times three different bottles of liquid glass over three months as I will mention below, that way, if it does blow in another area you will most likely SEAL that area also).

K-Seal Ultimate is able to repair head gasket failures, even where the cooling system is being over-pressurised by exhaust gases entering the system.
Common Coolant Leaks
K-Seal can deal with all of these leaks and more, as long as they are identified as early as possible. It is easy to use – simply shake it and pour it into the coolant mixture and it will work automatically.

User questions & answers
Question: | can i use it when the copper stuff failed to work |
Answer: | What I did was dump a can of the head gasket fix, _and_ a can of the copper stuff into the radiator. I think they're pretty much the same, except the head gasket stuff has bigger particles. My reasoning was that I have no idea what the leak(s?) look like, and multiple particle sizes were better than not. At any rate - one can of each into my 1999 Ranger 3.0 appears to have stopped a leak that was occurring between the timing cover and the block. On that engine, the timing cover has ports for the water pump, and taking off the timing cover.... pulley, A/C components, P/S components, water pump, and alternator, as well as the radiator. A real pain in winky. I figured before all that work... lets give 'er a try with Bar's. So far so good! |
Question: | Can thsi item ship to malaysia |
Answer: | You may try putting it in your shipping cart. if it shows a warning sign about the shipping problem then it won't be shipped there. |
Question: | Can this seal leak from pistons to coolant system, rather than vice-versa? My car doesn't burn coolant, rather the exhaust goes into coolant system |
Answer: | Yes. A bad head gasket can cause water to get into the oil (very very bad), water into the combustion chamber (white clouds from the exhaust pipes) and other less than desirable things. The leak seal product is a stop-gap measure not a long term fix. The head gasket needs to be changed. |
Question: | If my car continues to emit white smoke from exhaust, should i switch to HG-1 instead |
Answer: | Typically, the seal is formed during the recommended idle time shown in the instructions, but if the leak is more severe or harder to get to, it could take several thermal cycles (heating up and cooling down) before the leak is fully sealed. In addition to watching for the white smoke to go away, our recommendation is to continue to monitor the engine temperature and coolant level over the next couple of days to see if the vehicle is overheating, and also to note how much coolant you are adding, as well as how often you are adding it. If the leak is not sealed, and you wish to use HG-1, you certainly could do so, but we would recommend that you drain and flush the cooling system before you do so in order to prevent the formation of a flow restriction from having too much stop leak product in your vehicle's coolant at one time.If you have any additional questions, or need additional information, please call our Tech Support team at 1-800-345-6572. Product description
Prestone Radiator Stop Leak features a patented formula that quickly stops leaks in radiators, water pumps, and heater cores while also protecting against pitting and corrosion. Prestone Radiator Stop Leak takes sealing performance to a higher level by both stopping the leak as well as the corrosive condition that causes leaks in the first place. Its unique combination of natural and synthetic components provides the ability to seal leaks up to 0.020-inches x 0.5-inches. What makes this possible is the size, strength, and durability afforded by fibrous particles, the same materials in bulletproof vests. Prestone Radiator Stop Leak particles have been chosen to seal even large leaks without interfering with the flow through the radiator and heater core tubes. It also boosts corrosion inhibitors to protect against pitting and corrosion, which cause radiator leaks.
