10 best cooling system sealer

A cooling system sealer, also known as a radiator sealer or coolant leak sealer, is a product designed to temporarily repair small leaks or seepages in a vehicle's cooling system. It is commonly used in automotive applications and falls under the category of car care products. Here's what you need to know about cooling system sealers:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of a cooling system sealer is to address minor leaks or seepages in the vehicle's cooling system. These leaks can occur in components like the radiator, heater core, hoses, or gaskets. The sealer is formulated to temporarily seal these leaks and prevent coolant loss.

  2. Composition: Cooling system sealers typically contain a mixture of chemicals and particles that are designed to flow through the cooling system along with the coolant. When they encounter a leak, they are drawn to the source and react to create a temporary seal. Common components in these sealers may include fibers, particles, and chemical compounds that can expand and harden upon contact with air.

  3. Temporary Solution: It's important to note that cooling system sealers provide a temporary fix for minor leaks. They are not a long-term or permanent solution. Vehicle owners should use them as a stopgap measure until they can properly repair the cooling system by replacing damaged components.

  4. Application: Applying a cooling system sealer is typically a straightforward process. The sealer is usually poured directly into the radiator or coolant reservoir. It is then circulated throughout the cooling system as the vehicle operates. Following the manufacturer's instructions is crucial to ensure effective sealing.

  5. Compatibility: Cooling system sealers are generally compatible with most types of coolant and cooling system materials. However, it's essential to check the product label and follow the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure compatibility with your specific vehicle.

  6. Effectiveness: The effectiveness of a cooling system sealer depends on the size and location of the leak. It is more likely to be successful with small, slow leaks rather than larger, more severe ones. If a leak is too extensive, it may not be effectively sealed by the sealer, and a professional repair may be necessary.

  7. Preventative Use: Some vehicle owners also use cooling system sealers as a preventative measure to help seal small leaks before they become more significant issues. Regular maintenance and inspection of the cooling system can help identify potential problems early.

In summary, a cooling system sealer is a car care product designed to temporarily seal minor leaks in a vehicle's cooling system. While it can be a useful tool for addressing small leaks, it is not a permanent solution, and proper repairs should be undertaken to address cooling system issues effectively. Vehicle owners should follow the manufacturer's instructions and use cooling system sealers as a temporary measure until proper repairs can be made.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work on a 06 scion tc
Answer: It will work on pretty much anything. But eventually you'll need a new radiator, somewhere between 5000-20000 miles later, it's inevitable. It will just stall the radiator purchase until later.
Question: i will be putting these in a 2003 chevy blazer do I need to fill the radiator then put the crushed tablets in how long do I need to run the car
Answer: You can put them in crushed or put them in whole. Then just drive the car normally. What happens is the tablets will dissolve and over time, will fill in the small cracks or porous areas.I've had good results with these.
Question: Is this product safe to use on dodge charger 2009 3.5l v
Answer: Ya it's safe but these products aren't a fix. Just slows it up so you have time to fix it. And when you change whatever is leaking you have to do a coolant flush to get all the gunk out. This stuff turns muddy and will clog the leak . So once the leak is fixed you will want that muddy gunk out
Question: Will this work on my honda accord
Answer: Yes, I would Not be afraid to use them on anything liquid cooled. I think they are made of organic material and have always worked great on any vehicle that looses coolant very slowly. If you have a major leak, you would need to just do yourself a favor and get the leak fixed

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this in a 2013 wrx 2.5 turbo or is only for non-turbos
Answer: I was just at a Subaru dealership and was going to buy this along with Subaru coolant for my 2006 WRX 2.5l Turbo, and the parts counter guy double checked with a tech in the back who said he stopped using this with turbo cars, so I didn't buy it. I also don't have any leaks or anything along those lines. I think they used to use this every coolant change as part of it but not anymore on the Turbo models.
Question: Can I add this to my 2000 GMC Jimmy radiator for the same purpose? I figure if it works for Subaru, it should work for other car
Answer: This is just a Subaru labeled version of Holt's Radweld @ holtsauto.com, so check their website for more info. I did some research, and yes, Subaru specifies it for the 2.5L engine, due to a common gasket failure, perhaps to get thru the warranty period before it fails. It is made in England, and contains borax and linseed meal. I used it in my 1992 Firebird, and added two bottles because it has a larger coolant capacity.Holt's claims to contains rust inhibitor, and the sealant particles are not likely to clog your radiator or heater core, so it can be used as a preventative to seal minor leaks, should they occur. I think it is better than other products on the market. The current price here is high, so I would try to find an equivalent product at your local auto parts store.
Question: I was wondering if i can use 2 containers instead of 1? i have a a 04 forester and it has a small leak. i used 1 already but did not seal
Answer: this will not seal your radiator. it is a conditioner to improve the mixture of the coolant to reduse build up of bad coolant deposits. i would advise to replace whatever is causeing it to leak. do no use stop leak additives you can create huge problems for your forester and possible kill the engine
Question: Do I only put in 1 bottle per fluid change/flush
Answer: Only 1 bottle is required per fluid change...

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need to flush the cooling system before using this product if I had used bar’s tablet? I am choosing between these two since the leak is small
Answer: You do not have to flush the system, in fact you may flush it after to put in the Bars Leak and run for a couple hundred miles to make sure your leak is sealed.
Question: will this work on the head also
Answer: Try it...it's inexpensive. Whether it works depends on the specifics of your problem. I tried it on a 4 cylinder BMW with a new head and profile gasket and a slow leak. It worked great.
Question: can it be used in a Tahoe plastic tank
Answer: i used it in my volvo which has a plastic expansion tank and no problems. it won't fix big leaks but if you're losing just a little coolant over time and can't find the leak this is the stuff to use!
Question: My radiator leaking from the seam. Slightly overheating. Will this seal at the seam
Answer: It should, depending on how big the leak/crack is,the one on my semi truck was dripping big, half a gallon a day,I was worried bc that s a $2,000.00 repair,I bought it not expecting any results, since I had previously used Bars leak (the small silver bottle) and didn t work,so this was a prayer and a last hope, 5,000 mls later and not a leak, not extra coolant added,it is liquid aluminum,so it bonds to wherever the leak is and forms a sealing coat...I think of it as welding from the inside...I hope it works for you as it did for me,it really was an answer to prayer...I know I m a bit dramatic but it was.PS,try to follow recommended amount or as close as recommended, not much less and not much more,I used 2 bottles on a 11 gal radiator.God bless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Liquid Aluminum is specifically designed to be directly added to the cooling system without having to flush out the antifreeze. It also can be used in water alone. But if using in water, it is recommended that another bottle of Liquid Aluminum be added to the system once antifreeze is installed.

Will it work in the new extended life antifreeze?

Yes, Liquid Aluminum works with all types of coolant including yellow, orange, pink, red, blue and green silicate based and non-silicate based OAT/HOAT antifreeze and/or water.

How long does it take to see results?

We recommend you drive/idle the vehicle for 10 to 20 minutes. In most cases the leak will be sealed instantly, but others will require up to 20 minutes. If the leak is not sealed in 20 minutes, a second application may be required or mechanical repair may be needed.

User questions & answers

Question: can you mix this with barstop if you all ready put that in the radiator
Answer: I did mix this with Irontite All Weather Seal. Did the K-seal first. Irontite a week later. Just to be sure. Since they both said it can remain in the system. Two weeks, still good.
Question: Can you use this in a 2013 escape
Answer: Unless specifically told to use no heating system sealants I have no reason I can think of you can't use it. I used some but sparingly until it got the job done. Its a little bottle but still have half left. It's been okay for about 6 months now.
Question: Does it discolor the antifreeze? Thanks
Answer: Unfortunately I can't say. I have a GM vehicle that uses the orangish color engine coolant and it and this product are so close in color it's hard to say if it would discolor the usual green-colored coolant found in non-GM vehicles. The other challenge is that I can only look at the coolant through an overflow reservoir and it's so dark when I look inside (I have to use an LED flashlight to see it adequately) that it would be hard to tell if there was any discoloration.
Question: will this work for leakey gaskets
Answer: This is "liquid glass" that dries rock hard and will seal your head gasket leak (its been used in farm equipment for over 75 years and is WELL proven to work, and it was discovered over a hundred years ago), but you MUST perform a simple test. Start your vehicle, let it idle for 45 minutes straight. If the temperature gauge does not indicate that your engine is overheating, then this product will most likely work. No overheating at an idle for 45 minutes MEANS that the head gasket leak is still small enough to be filled by this liquid glass. Shake the container for 30 seconds, put the liquid in your COOLANT system, drive for an hour (or other words, operate at normal temperature, especially if its an aluminum block with cast iron heads), and then let it sit for 24-48 hours (the longest time is better). This sitting time allows the liquid glass to harden completely through. If it overheats then, it most likely its a thermostat or water pump or lower radiator hose sucking shut under load (sometimes the upper one also) or radiator or radiator fan or leaking core plug or leaking coolant storage unit OR your ENGINE OIL is very low from leaking (completely different problem that has nothing to do with the coolant system, but much to do with the cooling of the engine also) or heat indicator gauge or it still could be a blown head gasket, because the hole is just too big for the sealant to seal it up OR the head gasket BLOWS in another area after you have sealed up the first hole with the coolant sealant you added (that's why you should add it three times three different bottles of liquid glass over three months as I will mention below, that way, if it does blow in another area you will most likely SEAL that area also). But buy this and try it even if your vehicle fails the 45 minute test after 10 minutes. Sometimes, it will still seal the leak, or at least slow it down. Also, you can add this once a month for three months, and maybe that will work also (this gives you a month to see how the car performs under various conditions, and for the reason I just mentioned above). If you need the car to last for just a short while (month to six months) this can be a quick fix to hold you over until you can sell the car (under buyer be where conditions) or get it to the shop when you have the money. $15 and a few minutes of your time OR the mechanic, you have to decide. Good luck. I'm a retired mechanic with two degrees in Diesel mechanics and I ran a shop for a year.... :)

Permanent Coolant Leak Repair with K-Seal

Coolant leaks don’t have to result in costly repair bills – simply add K-Seal to your coolant system for a quick and permanent fix. K-Seal is trusted by millions of customers worldwide, and the only coolant leak repair fluid carried by the AA, the UK’s largest roadside repair company.

K-Seal couldn’t be simpler to use. K-Seal’s unique formula will seek out holes and cracks, and permanently seal them, with no adverse impact on the efficiency of your engine cooling.

Coolant System Sealer

Once the crack or hole has been located, the microfibers instantly begin to mesh together within the gap, building a seal literally fiber by fiber to stop the coolant leaking through the gap.

The particles in our K-Seal products are very precisely designed to be large enough to repair holes up to 0.635mm in size but deliberately small enough to never block any passageways or tubes within the cooling system, including those inside the heater core and radiator.

Once the microfibers have sealed and fixed the leak, a combination of exposure to either the external atmosphere or the gases within the combustion chamber and the heat within the cooling system and engine causes the K-Seal formula to cure. This results in an extremely strong and permanent seal able to withstand even the high pressures from the combustion chamber. This is how K-Seal Ultimate is able to repair head gasket failures, even where the cooling system is being over-pressurized exhaust gases entering the system

Common Coolant Leaks

K-Seal can deal with all of these leaks and more, as long as they are identified as early as possible. It is easy to use – simply shake it and pour it into the coolant mixture and it will work automatically.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I have to keep using it or is it a one and done type of deal
Answer: It worked for me. 2005 impala v6. One bottle saved it from the crusher. Mechanics want 2000$usd for the replacement of head gaskets. The car ran badly for a while and still used some water but after a few drives it works fine. The check engine light even finally turned off. It was worth the price even just to avoid towing this again, but it keeps running!
Question: will it plug the heater core
Answer: I have a 1995 Honda Odyssey, 4 cylinders. Blown head gasket, puffs of steam out the tailpipe, small geyser from the radiator. Used Blue Devil, following all instructions, and about 80% better but still some steam out the tailpipe and smaller bubbles in the coolant. As per tech advice from Blue Devil I took out the spark plug from the offending chamber and ran for 50 minutes. I did this aggravation twice. Still leak. So I got this product, flushed the system using Prestone chemical flush, keep the thermostat out and then put in the Ba's Leak HG-1. I only used bout 40% of the bottle and diluted it about 3:1 with distilled water and antifreeze. Did this because it was so thick. Followed instructions, initial run was difficult because it was not circulating well and was running hot. But the second session went fine after top off. After the fourth cycle I looked into the running radiator and there were no more bubbles and no more steam out the back. Success! However, my heater core is clogged. No big deal as this is California. Question: can I eventually restore the heater core by back flushing the cooling system? I wouldn't do this till the Fall. In the past K Seal had pugged up my heater core and I recoverd most of the function by back flushing (Firestone, $120).
Question: Ok for ford 6.9 idi diesel ?Eng overheated-very slight combustion leak in cooling sys,no white smoke, oil clean. Is1 bottle enough for eng 8gal cap
Answer: yes also try engine restore to stop your combustion leak it works well with 6.9 idi my blow by was so bad it blew off the oil cap once but after engine restore 8 cylinder it actually brought the compression backup to factory only drawback is you must use it every oil change
Question: will this mix with other stop leak
Answer: I am not sure, but I would call Bar's Leak Tech Service at Call tech support:800-345-6572 (M-F, 8a -5p EST) You can also go to their site Bar's Leak.com and lookn at their FAQ section

Question: Que cantidad de Cooling System Repair se pone al motor y cada cuanto tiempo
Answer: Una botella a la vez y aproximadamente una vez cada 5000 millas. Gracias,
Question: Has anyone us this on Diesel engine for combustion leaking into coolant
Answer: I used it on a semi for a pump leak. It’s not a permanent fix. But it can get you a couple of days to get you home.
Question: I have a leak in the bottom left of my radiator ... Not sure if its the radiator or the hose its kinda hard to tell. runs hot in traffic
Answer: Hmmm... Hose leaks are hard to stop....... It's usually better to replace the hose.... If it is the radiator, this will more than likely work..... Are you running hot when the coolant is low? or are you running hot most of the time? This won't do anything to help a radiator that does not cool efficiently, the radiator would need to be replaced.
Question: Will using this product do anything to tear up ur vehicle if ur not sure it has a leak
Answer: Shouldn't, only flows through the closed cooling system. I had a freeze plug leaking, was too large of a leak for this to fix, noticed no adverse effects after replacing freeze plug.

Bar's Leaks 1109 Block Seal Liquid Copper Intake and Radiator Stop Leak - 18 oz.

Bar's Leaks

Based on 373 reviews Check latest price

Product description

It’s part of life: older cars, trucks, vans, SUVs and even RVs can develop larger leaks in their radiators and intake manifolds. If you’ve tried regular stop leak products, you know they are not powerful enough to stop these larger leaks. If you visit the service center down the street, you know just how expensive it can be to repair an intake gasket leak through a mechanic. Isn’t there a better way? There should be, which is why Bar’s Leaks designed the Liquid Copper Block Seal Intake & Radiator Stop Leak. This one-step sealer was designed to quickly and safely stop these overwhelming leaks. When you’re experiencing a mild to moderate intake gasket seal leak, discover the fast, effective, inexpensive power of liquid copper. What does it do? Our formula permanently repairs larger leaks in radiators, intake manifolds and gaskets, heater cores, blocks, heads and freeze plugs. It contains an antifreeze-compatible sodium silicate liquid glass formula, so no draining of the cooling system is required. Not to mention, it will not harm the cooling system when used properly. The intake gasket seal you’ve been looking for is far more effective, easy to use, and less expensive than you’ve ever imagined. This is why Bar’s Leaks exists: To offer imminently usable, low-cost intake gasket seal and other products to auto owners who have no special experience or expertise. You’ll find plenty of options when searching for products to fix an intake gasket leak. While our competition may claim to stop the leak quickly, their products don’t always perform as advertised and they sometimes make things worse. Their stop leak products can’t get your car back on the road like Bar’s Leaks — that’s why we’ve been the most trusted stop leak brand since 1947. Throughout our long history of serving car owners like you, we’ve used a team of dedicated chemical engineers to constantly develop and refine products that are safe, fast and effective in stopping intake gasket leaks and other automotive problems — including liquid copper and much more. Make sure to watch Bobby and Caitlin in our handy how-to video so you can become a “three-minute mechanic” and finally take control of that leak.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this product to stop leak on my honda element 2003 engine block? the engine block has a small leak
Answer: Thank you for your question and for considering Bar's Leaks Liquid Copper Block Seal Intake & Radiator Stop Leak (part number 1109). This one step formula was developed to repair larger leaks in radiators, intake manifolds & gaskets, heater cores, blocks, heads and freeze plugs, so it should help you with a small leak in your Honda Element. Please note, though, that cooling systems that are dirty or partially clogged should be flushed before using. If you haven't had a chemical cooling system flush performed on your vehicle in the last four years, you might consider doing so now. Flushing with water will remove any loose sediment in the cooling system, but if there is any scale built up, it would take a chemical flush to dissolve and remove it, giving our product the best possible chance to stop the leak. If you have any questions, or we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact our Tech Support team at 1-800-345-6572. We are here to assist you Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, Eastern time.
Question: Can this help with a 5.3l gm engine with the bad cylinder head castings? i'm saving for a replacement engine, just need this one to last a while
Answer: Thanks for your question, and for considering Bar's Leaks to help with your vehicle's needs. The product you are asking about - Bar's Leaks Block Seal Intake & Radiator Stop Leak is a great product for repairing larger leaks in radiators, intake manifolds & gaskets, heater cores, blocks, heads and freeze plugs. However, if your vehicle is showing signs of head gasket failure due to the bad castings you refer to, we would suggest one of our head gasket products, such as Head Gasket Fix (part number 1111), which is very successful in sealing leaks as long as your vehicle can run 20 minutes or longer without overheating or needing to add coolant. If your vehicle is unable to run for 20 minutes without overheating, but can run for at least 15 minutes, we recommend our strongest head gasket stop leak - Head Seal Blown Head Gasket Repair (part number HG-1). For best results, these products should be installed into a clean cooling system, following the installation instructions and proper dosage. If you are unsure how clean your cooling system is, or you haven't had it chemically flushed in the last three to four years, we recommend doing so before installing any stop leak products. If you have any other questions, or we can be of further assistance, please feel free to call our Tech Support team at 1-800-345-6572. We are here to assist you Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, Eastern time.
Question: heater core leak fixed
Answer: The label on the lower right does show Heater Core. So this could work since coolant is being pumped through the heater core to heat the cabin of a vehicle.
Question: Will this help to stop a block leak where the water pump connects to the cooling system
Answer: No. This will only help with small leaks. As temp fix.

It also can be used in water alone however, a second bottle of Liquid Copper is recommended to be added to the system once antifreeze is installed.

Do I need to drain my cooling system after using Liquid Copper?

No, this product is designed to be left in the cooling system to protect from future leaks.

What are the dosage recommendations?

Use 1 (one) bottle for regular size cooling systems, this covers most 4, 6, 8 and 10 cylinder engines. For small cooling systems, such as 4 cylinders with no air conditioning, use 1⁄2 (half) of bottle. For other small systems use approximately 3 ounces per gallon of cooling capacity. In larger systems, use 1 (one) bottle for every 6 gallons of cooling system capacity.
