14 best paint for plastic bumpers
Painting plastic bumpers on a car can be a necessary task to restore their appearance or protect them from damage. Here's what you should know about paint for plastic bumpers:
Preparation: Before you begin painting a plastic bumper, thorough preparation is crucial. Clean the bumper surface to remove dirt, grime, and any previous coatings. Use a plastic cleaner or mild detergent and water, followed by a rinse and drying.
Primer: Apply a plastic bumper primer. Primers designed for plastic surfaces improve adhesion and promote a smoother finish. Make sure to choose a primer that is compatible with your chosen paint type.
Paint Type: There are various types of paint suitable for plastic bumpers, including:
Spray Paint: Automotive spray paints designed for plastic bumpers are readily available. They offer a convenient and even application.Look for paints specifically labeled for plastic surfaces.
Aerosol vs. Gun Spray: You can use aerosol spray cans or automotive paint guns. Paint guns are often preferred for professional results, while aerosol cans are suitable for DIY projects.
Color Matching: Ensure that the paint color matches your vehicle's bumper color. You can usually find the right color code in your vehicle's owner's manual or on a label inside the driver's side door.
Painting Process: Apply several thin coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Follow the manufacturer's recommended drying times and techniques. This process helps achieve a smooth, even finish.
Clear Coat: After the paint has dried, consider applying a clear coat to protect the finish and enhance the shine. Clear coats are available in both aerosol cans and as part of professional paint systems.
Drying and Curing: Allow the painted bumper to dry and cure properly. This may take several hours or even days, depending on the paint and environmental conditions. Avoid exposing the freshly painted bumper to moisture or extreme temperatures during this period.
Buff and Polish: Once the paint has fully cured, you can buff and polish the bumper to achieve a glossy finish. Use automotive polishing compounds and a polishing machine or buffer for best results.
Maintenance: Regularly wash and wax your car, including the repainted bumper, to maintain its appearance and protect the finish over time.
Professional Assistance: If you are not confident in your painting skills or if the bumper has significant damage, consider seeking professional assistance from an auto body shop. They have the expertise and equipment to ensure a high-quality finish.
When painting plastic bumpers, attention to detail and patience are essential to achieve a professional-looking result. Following the right preparation and painting steps can help ensure the longevity and durability of the paint job.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between this and the tb101 trim and bumper paint (other than the price?) are they both black |
Answer: | This one is charcoal grey and tb101 is flat black |
Question: | Will this fade after sitting in the sun for more than 1 year |
Answer: | Follow these steps and it will last longer. Lets say you got polish on the plastic or rubber or lets say it is several years old and faded. First wash area with automotive wash product, then dry in sun. Next purchase a grease and wax remover (Dupli-color brand CM543 is a good brand) clean area good and allow to dry. Take a clean cloth that does not leave lent and wipe off area. Tape off (automotive paint grade) and cover up large area not to be painted (spray paint will float with or without breeze) . Apply several lite coats instead of one heavy coat allowing each to dry each time. Once color is uniformed then remove tape and other materials covering the rest of vehicle. Once paint has dried let set in sun for several hours and do not wash vehicle for a few days. It will work |
Question: | Is it a flat black or gloss. Thanks |
Answer: | This is a flat black paint. Specifically used for side steps, door handles, and bumpers. Anything that was flat black before, will look really good afterward. Hope this helps. |
Question: | how many cans for 2 bumpers? is this paint or a restorer product |
Answer: | I used one can for a bumper and 2 side steps on my truck, with paint to spare. This is definitely a paint, as you want to tape off any area that you do not want to be black. It has restorative qualities to it and definitely makes a noticeable difference |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use sem bumper coater on inside door vinyl [74 dodge dart] & interior hard plastic parts with some deterioration |
Answer: | Yes. Clean with any all purpose cleaner and let dry. Then wipe panels down with isopropyl alcohol or wax & grease remover and let dry. Then spray several light coats of SEM letting it dry between coats until you get the coverage you want. SEM bumper coater usually sticks very well to vinyl and hard plastic without the need of any primer. It dries faster and preforms better than any rattle can paint I have ever used. |
Question: | How resistant is this stuff to scratches, especially on interior trim parts |
Answer: | This stuff is Great. Real professional grade. I painted the faded bumpers and trim on my Explorer, and almost a year later, no scratches or fading. |
Question: | Does this appear to be high yield? As in will it build up? And still be somewhat flexible |
Answer: | Not sure what you mean by high yield, but it does not build up quickly, and it is flexible. |
Question: | Is this high gloss |
Answer: | It is not a high gloss, but takes glossy products |

User questions & answers
Question: | would this be ok for use on game consoles? im looking for something that can protect decals |
Answer: | It would work on the console.....BUT...test it out on the decals first. Two issues. One it might cause decals to peel because it will dissolve glues. Two depending on decals it might make the colors run. I would test on area your don't care about first. If it works I would spray super light coats to get a perfect look. |
Question: | will this paint work on the interior console of a car |
Answer: | I am sure it will. I used it on a Ford Escape on the whole lower half of the car, which is plastic trim and the bumpers a year ago and it looks like I painted it yesterday.Being inside it should last even better. |
Question: | will this work to paint the underside of soccer cleats? other spray paints i have tried dry sticky so grass sticks to them |
Answer: | Use a spray plastic adhesive first, then spray a coat of paint. This paint includes a mix of adhesive and paint. That's probably why you are getting a sticky finish. |
Question: | will this work on headlights that the clear coat is peeling off of |
Answer: | I don't know that I would wanna try that they have glues and liquid stuff for glass repair I'm sure could did something specifically made for that project |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this paint be used on metal trim with out primer |
Answer: | It is for plastic trim. If you want to use it on metal I would use primer so it sticks well. It will be a little thick after a few coats. |
Question: | Is primer recommend when using SEM trim black |
Answer: | I used the SEM Plastic and Vinyl prep with no primer and it adhered with no problem on exterior lower plastic panels on a Jeep Cherokee |
Question: | The spray comes out somewhat spotty/blotchy, is there a correct way to clean it or is it supposed to come out like this |
Answer: | Well it souldn't be splotchy; if the can is going to sit unused for over 20 minutes, invert the can and spray onto scrap until cleared of spray. If the nozzle is somewhat clogged, clean it up with acetone and a very find pin. Fine abrasive, paper or steel wool should clean up the already sprayed. I don't know if acetone or some other solvent can be used after the paint has set up. Very clean surface is needed: no oil, grease, or hand prints. Oh yes, shake the can for at minimum 1 1/2 minutes before using. That marble in the bottom of can really need to sound sharp when it hits the bottom of the can. Also, best use it at room temperature. If cold, test it first on a piece of scrap. Read the directions about how far the can should be from the surface. And read about the time between sprays. I've used SEM 39143 for my old toy cars for years. Guess they can put out a bad can, so test spray scrap. Good luck. |
Question: | Has anyone used a clear cost over this? If so, what kind is recommended? Reason I ask is due to marks left from bird droppings |
Answer: | USC makes a aerosol clear 3680061, However we cannot guarantee results, surface would also need to be properly prepped, scuffed to ensure adhesion |

User questions & answers
Question: | can you also use this on metal as well |
Answer: | Don’t know. You can use bondo for that. |
Question: | Does this require or comes with a hardener |
Answer: | Comes with a tube of hardener in the can |
Question: | What application is this filler for? Can I use this to fill in any imperfections on a bumper that might be deeply into the plastic |
Answer: | Yes you can but sand it well so none of the bumper around the gouge sticks out more than the bumper surface itself. |
Question: | This will work to fill deep scratches in a new Nissan plastic bumper |
Answer: | Yes, it will. You will have to sand the area heavily though to the point of being rough. This will help with adhesion. |

Question: | What do I need to do to get the best results for painting the rubber step boards on my Expedition |
Answer: | Cleaning it, scuff it then paint |
Question: | The item description provides heat tolerances for some of vht's other paints, but what is the max temperature for this particular paint (hood/bumper |
Answer: | I dont see any heat tolerance range on this can. VHT is just the brand name on this one. The can says its made for metal, plastic, and fiberglass, so I would guess the max temp would be whatever a black plastic bumper would be sitting in the sun. I didn't like this paint. I first used it on a small plastic part of my motorcycle and it didn't spray well. it sprayed in a cone shape instead of a fan. And it wasnt a fine mist. It sprayed globs of paint that clumped up on the part. I stopped using this and bought duplicolor. It sprays in a nice fine mist fan pattern. |
Question: | is this a glossy color |
Answer: | More of a satin semi gloss |
Question: | How many cans to spray the hood of a 97 eagle talon |
Answer: | 2 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this require several prep work like Sem 39767 Problem Plastic R.M.? Any prep work? Will this work on vertical so call bars on plastic grille |
Answer: | The only prep I did was sand the gap and surrounding area but probably should have used a primer. I don't think its designed for rigid plastics like grills. |
Question: | Image shows three separate kits. Is it three or just one 1oz kit |
Answer: | Just one kit. 68422. Fortunately, this picture shows the part numbers. There are clearly two other kits 32 and 42. Amazon uses whichever stock photo is easiest to plunk on the site. There is no guarantee that the product you purchase is the product shown. Retailers advise that they do not like Amazon's policy, and would like to use accurate pics. At some point, Amazon will get there. Until then, do not rely on the pictures. |
Question: | What color is this when it cures? Thank you in advance |
Answer: | The product dries a dark grey eggshell color. You can add color too, but it most likely will affect its bonding strength. |
Question: | is it sandable |
Answer: | It’s sandable but not easily |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does this compare to others? specifically chemical guys vrp |
Answer: | If u are looking to restore black trim there is nothing better than solution finish... as a dressing or semi permanent restoration, this is fine.... For just enhancement, vrp is fine |
Question: | This is more expensive than TriNova. Is it worth it |
Answer: | Worth is in the eyes of the beholder. I am kinda picky when it comes to appearance and this stuff satisfied my expectations. The interior panels look as good as new. |
Question: | Will this work on our 2010 original dodge charger pillars. It will save a lil money if it will restore the black in them |
Answer: | I used it on the plastic edging and grill on my 2002 Audi TT (was white and powdery from age/sun exposure) and it went basically back to looking new. If you are using it on a big surface (ie not just edges), I'd recommend being very generous in your application and maybe get 2 bottles. Also, wash and dry the surface before you apply the stuff. If the pillars are plastic/vinyl and not polished and have that white powdery look from age, it will probably work. It doesn't work like paint though, so if you have peeling paint or something, this won't bring back that color. It's more for aged plastic/vinyl parts. |
Question: | How long does it last |
Answer: | Should last months!! -- We are so confident in everything we sell that every product is backed by our Zero Risk Policy. Use the product once, or use the entire bottle. If you become unsatisfied for any reason at all, simply let us know and we will take care of you! Thanks for the question! |

Adhesion promoter improves adhesion for all paints and acts like a clear primer. Ideal for interior or exterior surfaces, like plastic, chrome, fiberglass bumpers and aluminum trim molding. Comes in an easy to use 11 ounce aerosol can.
- Flash point: -17 degrees_celsius
User questions & answers
Question: | Is it possible to use this on plastic outdoor furniture to help the paint adhere, or does it just work on "automotive" plastics |
Answer: | If the outdoor furniture is ABS Plastic, it should work. Just read the label for its' application. |
Question: | Can you use with Auto Air Colors |
Answer: | As long as you use it over plastic and foll the instructions, yes. I let it just det dry to the point that it doesn't look wet and start painting. I have used it for years an had zero adhesion failures on plastics. |
Question: | Just curious. Does the product's label indicate how much area 1 can covers? Thanks in advance |
Answer: | The back label states that it covers 12-14 square feet. Hope this helps. |
Question: | After applying this to bare plastic, do I need a primer before the base coat? Or can I just apply the base color coat to this |
Answer: | What this stuff does is essentially chemically break down the surface of the plastic so that when you paint, which you must do immediately, the color binds with the dissolved plastic and as the adhesion promoter dries/evaporates you are left with a surface where the plastic material and the foreign material (paint) is dissolved together. This allows the next coat to bind with the first coat and the third coat to bind with the second and so on. Don't wait for this stuff to dry. Follow the directions on the can carefully. If you let it dry then the plastic has already re-formed and your first coat is not going to bind. |

Adhesion Promoter
Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter improves adhesion of enamel and lacquer top coats to all surfaces, including plastic and chrome. Adhesion Promoter is an all-purpose clear primer ideal for both interior and exterior applications.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a new car, can i use this to protect it? or is there something better |
Answer: | Yes this is a very good product to use to protect your new car. |
Question: | Would this be OK for internal trm |
Answer: | I use it on my dash and trim in my truck. I like it, but it can be slick on the steering wheel. Works and looks better than other interior trim in my opinion. The shine last longer |
Question: | will this restore the worn, oxidized black plastic spoiler on a Prius? Is it cover-up or real restoration |
Answer: | When it rains, the black plastic on my 2005 element gets white streaks and lightens to almost grey. This stuff brings it black again. In full sun, it does require monthly application. For $10 a bottle, it's an easy fix to make the car look new again. |
Question: | Is it a permanent restoration or does it wash off |
Answer: | No. It's applied every other car-wash when I use it, some people can get one month between applications. Permanent restoration for plastic most times involves either clear coating it or new parts. Honestly the cheapest way to detail the plastic external parts of a vehicle without breaking the bank. |

Restoring Your Exterior Trim and Plastic
In the case of opaque plastic and urethanes left exposed and dirty, where the surface is eroded and oxidized, dried out and faded, you can revitalize it with a plastic restorative agent. Mothers Back-to-Black Trim & Plastic Restorer is a good example of a formula designed for this purpose.
Repeated applications over several days can help to bridge the gap between tired or sunburned molecular bonds. When washing your car, you may notice that exterior components (such as trim, molding, bumpers, door handles, vents, seals and others) have faded from black to gray, their surface crispy and cracked. This is where restoratives like Back-to-Black shine.
Remember this: once plastic has deteriorated so much that it needs Back-to-Black, then lighter chemicals like Protectant can’t save it anymore. At this point Back-to-Black is the only option.
