12 best clear coats for cars
Clear coats for cars are an essential component of automotive paint systems used to protect and enhance the appearance of a vehicle's paint job. They serve as a transparent layer applied over the basecoat (colored paint) to provide several important benefits. Here's what you should know about clear coats for cars:
Key Functions and Characteristics:
Protection: The primary function of a clear coat is to protect the underlying basecoat from various environmental factors. This includes UV radiation, oxidation, road debris, bird droppings, tree sap, and more. Clear coats act as a shield against these elements, preventing damage to the paint.
Enhanced Gloss and Shine: Clear coats enhance the gloss and shine of the vehicle's paint, giving it a deep and lustrous appearance. This glossy finish is desirable for aesthetic reasons and is often associated with a well-maintained and attractive vehicle.
UV Resistance: Clear coats contain UV inhibitors that help prevent UV radiation from fading or deteriorating the basecoat's color. This protection is vital for preserving the car's original paint color.
Improved Durability: Clear coats increase the overall durability of the paint job, making it more resistant to scratches, chips, and minor abrasions. This durability extends the life of the paint and maintains the car's appearance.
Ease of Cleaning: A smooth and glossy clear coat surface is easier to clean and maintain. Dirt and contaminants are less likely to adhere to the paint, making regular washing and detailing more manageable.
Color Depth: Clear coats enhance the depth and vibrancy of the basecoat color, making it appear richer and more vibrant.
Types of Clear Coats:
Single-Stage Clear Coat: In some older cars and budget-friendly paint jobs, a single-stage paint system is used where the color and clear coat are combined in a single application. While this simplifies the painting process, it may not provide the same level of protection and durability as a modern two-stage system.
Two-Stage Clear Coat: Most modern automotive finishes use a two-stage clear coat system. In this system, the basecoat (color) is applied first, followed by a separate clear coat layer. This two-stage approach allows for better control over the color and clarity of the finish.
Application and Maintenance:
Clear coats for cars are typically applied by professional auto painters using spray guns in a controlled environment, such as a paint booth. The application process involves multiple coats of clear coat to achieve the desired thickness and finish.
To maintain the appearance and longevity of the clear coat and paint, car owners should:
- Wash and detail their vehicles regularly to remove dirt and contaminants.
- Use high-quality automotive waxes and sealants to further protect the clear coat.
- Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive materials when cleaning.
- Park in shaded areas or use car covers to reduce UV exposure.
- Address any scratches or chips promptly to prevent further damage.
Overall, clear coats for cars play a crucial role in preserving the appearance and value of vehicles by providing protection, gloss, and longevity to the paint job.Proper maintenance and care can help ensure that the clear coat continues to perform effectively over time.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this paint match a 1999 civic hatchback oem silver |
Answer: | The only way to be 100% sure is look up the paint code on the driver's side door jamb, as in: http://www.automotivetouchup.com/paint-codes/honda.htm |
Question: | How do you select the paint color to match your vehicle |
Answer: | Get the paint code from the car VIN tag (usually under the hood or inside driver door, and go to the Duplicolor website and look up by application. |
Question: | clover |
Answer: | I ordered 3 cans of paint, two of them were so old that no matter how long you shook them, the paint came out in globs & they were useless. I tried to RMA the paint, but Amazon told me that I couldn't ship them back because they're flamable, but I couldn't have a refund unless I returned the product. I've had good success with dupli-color before when buying it from the Auto Parts store, but I would recommend getting it locally rather than on Amazon. |
Question: | I have a scratch on my bumper will i be able to just do the area with all the products or will i have to do the entire bumper to get it to blend |
Answer: | You should not have to paint the entire bumper. First, prep the area where the scratch is. Clean the entire bumper, then depending on the depth of the scratch, you may want to lightly sand and area surrounding the scratch until all is smooth. Then wipe lightly with laquer thinner. Mask off the bumper to isolate it from the car. Get Dupli-color primer and apply a few light coats. Let them dry well before applying more. This will build up the area around the scratch that you had sanded. Let the primer dry overnight. Next, get some 400 and 600 grit sandpaper (wet type) and with a wet piece of 400, sand lightly the entire primed area. Keep dipping the paper in water and don't use fingertips! Clean area with wet cloth and repeat process with 600grit wet paper and you can then sand some of the areas surrounding the primer (scuff the painted surfaces around the repair) Clean it up with damp clothes and let dry. Apply the paint in light coats in a side to side motion. Don't try to cover the primer too fast. Light coats work best and allow dry time in between coats. Eventually the primer will be covered and some of the new paint will then overlap the original paint on bumper (this is part of the blending process) Once all is covered and you cannot see the primer under the paint, let it dry overnight.Next day, get some 1000 grit wet paper and sand the entire repair area lightly. This will help smooth out the new paint. Dont sand too hard so as to make the primer exposed. Sand beyond the new paint so as to scuff up the old untouched paint on the bumper. You are getting the surrounding area ready for the clear cloat blend.Wipe with clean wet cloth and when thoroughly dry you can apply the dupli color clear coat using the same light coat, overlap method. Now you will want to go beyond the repair area bringing the clear coat into the original painted surfaces by a few inches all around. Let the clear coat dry in between coats. Once clear is applyed, let it dry overnight. Next day you can wet sand the entire repair area with 1000 wet paper. Remember, no finger tips. Use your palm or get a sanding block but go lightly. Once you have finished sanding, wipe clean with wet cloth and then polish with Light polishing compound. You can do this by hand if you dont have a buffer. It may sound complicated, but that's a process that will give you the best results outside of going to a body shop. Another consideration, if the scratch is small, get a bottle of duplicolor touch up. It has the brush built in and you can possibly just carefully use the brush and paint to fill in the scratch. I hope this helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used with duplicolor |
Answer: | Yes but don't use duplicolor. Call around local auto paint stores and get real auto paint put into aerosol cans. Transtar is a decent one who will do this and it's better quality. My personal opinion. |
Question: | can i use this with high gloss plastidip on a chrome grille |
Answer: | Not sure about chrome. I would coat the chrome grill with adhesion spray first then plastidip. Apply this Spray Max in the end but make sure the adhesion and the plastidip to stick firmly first. |
Question: | How long after applying this can I colorsand and polish |
Answer: | Same as any other clear. Obviously depends on air temp/humidity etc. Also, the longer it dries, the harder it is, so hard to cut |
Question: | So, i’m an artist and i resin my paintings. is this technically a resin/epoxy in a spray can? could i possibly use this on my paintings |
Answer: | Yes it works well. I also do paintings (abstract) and used 2 part resin. The spray Max is just as good and durable. The draw back is, is once you puncture the internal can inside the main can, you only have about 48 hours to use. So you have to make sure you have a few paintings ready to go and coat them all at the same time. Also, purchase a respirator. Harbor freight has them for Les than $20. You get quite a few uses from them, then just throw away and purchase a new one. The vapors in the 2 part spray Max are not good to be inhaling. Outside is fine, but in a enclosed area is not good unless you wear a respirator. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fill in chips or does it just cover it |
Answer: | You have to use paint first to cover the chips and use this clear coat to seal it |
Question: | So this clear coat dries up like a plastic sheet. when i tried to sand down to even out with my car finish, it peeled off. how am i going to level it |
Answer: | One of my bottles dried out a little and that effect happened to me. If you've waited long enough to sand and it still does that, I'd try another bottle just in case. If you've had yours awhile, it may have reduced some like mine did. |
Question: | Can i get the msds (material safety data sheet) for this item? if yes, whom could i contact |
Answer: | Just don't eat or inhale the product, or it's fumes in high concentrations, and you'll be fine. It doesn't bite |
Question: | Is this for any color car? It doesn’t have any color to it |
Answer: | Toyota / Lexus colors have numbers not names, for instance their white is 040 and the color you have is 00C . 00C is "Clear Coat" which is the one they use for clear (no color) on top of another any color. All touch ups have clear coat as the top coat so the color coat doesn't pick up dirt. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Painted alloy wheels with duplicolor wheel coating (hwp101 silver), is this clear coat compatible, any special application instructions |
Answer: | I would recommend using duplicolor # hwp103 for wheel clear because of high heat temperature |
Question: | Can this product be applied over existing clear coat with out sanding. If so what do I clean surface clear coat with before applying |
Answer: | If using over existing clear, you MUST wet SSN the existing clear with 800-1000 grit. These very fine scratches will be filled with the new clear coat - failure to sand will result in failure and eventual peeling of the clear coat - the new clear needs a surface to bite into. |
Question: | can i use it my my plastic headlights, and if so, do i need an adhesion promotor |
Answer: | I sanded with 1000 grit and the clear coat filled the lines in very well. I had previously used Meguires headlight clearcoat and sanded with 2500, but the lines were still visible after 2 coats - it also turned yellow and started to peel after 4 months. I sanded all the Meguires off prior to using the 2k to avoid any lifting problems. They looked great after 2 coats. Beware the overspray! I should have covered my whole car with a drop cloth. |
Question: | What type of clearcoat is this? Acrylic/Enamel/Laquer |
Answer: | Acrylic. Word of caution. Make sure that you apply a very light coat at first, followed by a second coat a little heavier, followed by an EVEN third wet coat. If you end up with a run DO NOT TRY TO FIX IT UNTIL THE CLEAR COAT IS COMPLETELY DRY!! Then use a new single edge razor blade to scrape any runs. If you have a speck of dust or a bug, gently remove then using a clean cotton swab, dab a drop of clear coat over the "hole" and let it merge into the void. Also, once you puncture the internal can, you only have about 2 hours before the product solidifies in the can. |

Answer: | Yes, but use SMR-600 in the Nasson because it has poor adhesion without it. |
Question: | is this compatible with single stage paint |
Answer: | I used this over rustoleum oil based. I gave the rustoleum plenty of time to dry and off gas before applying the clear. I have to add that the paint job I performed was definitely unusual and not a "normal" type of application. I have had it on for 2 or 3 years now and have had no problems. |

Question: | Is it heat resistant? Can i apply it to engine parts |

Question: | I just painted using acrylic enamel with clear in it can I use fc720 for better shine |
Answer: | Yes Adam......Fc720 will boost the shine if you ........since you have clear in the base.....scuff with 1000 grit before applying pure Clear |
Question: | refraze my question I want to use this to clear coat a 55 chevy original paint with out anything else will it work |
Answer: | It will, but try a small spot first, sometimes a catalyzed product will lift an uncat product. I think it will be fine |
Question: | Can this be used on head lights |
Answer: | If you wet sand with 1000 grit and use a flex additive , you can great short term fix but eventually, any urethane clear will peel. Use a good rubbing compound and a lot of elbow grease to solve problems with yellowing plastic lenses. Avoid any kind of coatings. If lenes are really bad replace them. |

Question: | Will this clear work over Dupli color lacquer base |
Answer: | I would assume so but I would try on a test panel first |
Question: | Do i need to add hardner |
Answer: | Yes, this kit comes with the hardener (activator) |
Question: | How do I tint this black. What kind of paint should I use to tint |
Answer: | Usually works most Acrylic paint and non enamel paint, carefully follow the mixing procedure & safety guidelines. |
Question: | Can I use this over oil based enamel |
Answer: | I wouldn't recommend it. Automotive urethane is susceptible to fisheyes from contamination and oil-based paint contains oil. The chances for success are slim. As a 30 year paint and collision tech I come across this question frequently. The tractor paint paint paint jobs sound great until you have to strip it off to put something better on it because you're tired of dealing with the lack of gloss etc. The SMR-130 is a great clear for the money and has an unbelievable gloss. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Perhaps less glaring to use matte on an older car? will it (after preparation) stick to the paint-type of a 2004 nissan sentra? thanks |
Answer: | I don't see why it wouldn't. People put more than one coat of clearcoat often to provide more protection to their paint. But, the suface needs to be clean and free of wax or any oils from your hands. This can cause a number of different flaws in the clearcoat. Some wet sanding may be needed also. But It's most important to make sure it's clean, try denatured alcohol or maybe acetone for cleaning. |
Question: | Would this create a strong, durable seal for press-on lettering which is on anodized aluminum? (trying to label video monitor buttons |
Answer: | I think it would have to have several coats to create a seal |
Question: | I have some matte black sink flanges that I would like to protect. They will be getting wet, but won’t stay wet. Will this work |
Answer: | This product is a clear coat to enhance a spray paint job, won’t add anymore protection |
Question: | Can I use this over rust for a patina finish |
Answer: | This would be great to use over a rusted patina. It will offer great protection to the patina as well. |

Answer: | yes, can be done is not affecting the surrounding area |
Question: | Can the treatment last longer if sealed with sealant wax |
Answer: | Our customers are recommending a second coat of emulsion rather than waxing (easier to do and result is about the same as a wax application) plus you need to bear in mind that if you want apply another coat of emulsion in say, 6 to 12 months time, any wax on the car MUST be removed before the application. OxideOff Team |
Question: | Can I spray a clear coat of paint over the oxide off? Would it help prolong the life and keep its shine |
Answer: | We have not attempted to apply clear coat on top of the emulsion, so we cannot really answer your question. But you need to bear in mind, that if you want apply another coat of emulsion in say, 6 to 12 months time, any clear coat, polish or waxes that have been applied on the car MUST be removed before the application. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does this product hold up in winter weather? ie, snow |
Answer: | Sorry, don't know. I'm using it to wax my 1:12 scale F1 models. They're clear coated with zero paints (also automotive paint) & it works great. Hope this helps. Good luck, Glenn... |
Question: | One bottle how many car wash |
Answer: | about 4 to 6 months. To lengthen its durability after you've applied it to your vehicle spray the car with water. This will allow the product to harden. After that just wash with a non-chemical car wash like the Zymol car wash which is all natural product. This should make it last about 6 months versus 4. |
Question: | how long does shine and water repellent last? one month. two, three |
Answer: | It will depending on how long the water spots have been on the car. Do not use a damp applicator to apply. Use a microfiber or cotton applicator pad. Apply Zymol Cleaner Wax on the applicator making the applicator moist. Apply in a back and forth motion (No circular motion) with moderate pressure rubbing opposite directions. While the Zymol Cleaner Wax is still moist wipe with a cotton or microfiber towel to remove. After the work is complete you can help set the wax by spraying distilled water on the surface and wipe with a microfiber towel. |
Question: | How well does this work with hard water |
Answer: | Chemical Guys are crooks; they sell flimsy, poorly-made products, and use excuses to avoid giving refunds. I'd advise you to buy your car care products elsewhere. Zymol is a Jim Dandy Cleaner Wax that's useful as a Sealer, as well. |
