14 best brother serger
A Brother serger, in the context of sewing and embroidery, is a type of sewing machine that specializes in finishing fabric edges and creating professional-looking seams. Sergers are also known as overlock machines. Brother is a well-known brand that manufactures sewing machines, including sergers, which are popular among both hobbyists and professional sewers.
Here are some key points about Brother sergers:
Function: Brother sergers are designed to trim, sew, and overcast raw fabric edges all in one pass. This creates neat and secure seams while preventing fraying. They are particularly useful for sewing knits, stretch fabrics, and creating finished edges on garments.
Thread Options: Brother sergers can use multiple threads simultaneously. Common configurations include 3-thread and 4-thread stitching, each providing a different type of seam finish. Some advanced models can even use 5 threads for more intricate seam designs.
Differential Feed: Many Brother sergers come equipped with a differential feed feature. This allows for better control when working with stretchy or slippery fabrics, preventing puckering or stretching of the material.
Built-In Rolled Hem: Some Brother serger models include a rolled hem function, which is great for creating decorative edges on garments or finishing delicate fabrics.
Adjustability: These sergers often offer various stitch width and length adjustments, allowing users to customize their stitches for different projects.
Accessories: Brother sergers usually come with a range of accessories, such as different presser feet and tools, to enhance versatility and ease of use.
Threading: Threading a serger can be more complex compared to a standard sewing machine due to the multiple threads involved. Brother typically provides clear threading guides and color-coded paths to simplify the process.
Price Range: Brother sergers come in a range of models and price points, making them accessible to both beginners and experienced sewers.
In the context of embroidery, while sergers are primarily designed for finishing edges and creating strong seams, they are not typically used for embroidery itself. For embroidery work, you would typically use an embroidery machine, which is a different type of sewing machine specifically designed for adding decorative designs and patterns to fabric.
Overall, a Brother serger is a valuable addition to any sewing enthusiast's toolkit, especially for those who want to achieve professional-looking seams and finishes on their sewing projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | use as a sewing machine |
Answer: | I know this is an old question and some of my answers are repeats, but if you are still using this machine and haven't come up with an answer maybe one of the following solutions from my own experience will help you. I love this machine and therefore completed an extensive search for answers to my questions which included: Brother Support (not that helpful), studying the manual carefully & repeatedly, asking sew 'n' vac store employees and lots of Google searches. Here, in no particular order, are advice/solutions that solved my gathering/bunching issue and many other issues. 1. PROPER UPPER THREADING: Regarding threading, let me advise that the thread will jump out of the correct lineup at times so if your stitch changes in a bad way, check that first. Also, I had to use a clip over a piece of foam on the last guide before the needle guide because it popped out constantly, regardless of checking, rechecking and having others check my threading. 2. PROPER BOBBIN THREADING: I am forgetful so actually check the manual each time I thread a bobbin. Improper bobbin threading will really mess you up. 3. CORRECT NEEDLE SIZE & TYPE for specific fabric--VERY IMPORTANT!! Some of this is trial and error. Not all needle/thread guidelines I found applied to my situation. I tried Schmetz--130/705, HaX1 of 15x1--the Brother manual states this as an alternative, but Organ HLX5 (not sold locally) is best. DO NOT use the Schmetz "UNIVERSAL" needles if you are working with a fabric that specifically requires sharp or ball point. The Universal has a slight ball point--not sharp not full ball point. Learned that the hard way. 4. CORRECT THREAD FOR SIZE OF NEEDLE, TYPE OF FABRIC AND EXPECTED END RESULT. (superiorthreads.com is an awesome resource for this and many other sewing, quilting, embroidery questions. They have tons of educational articles and you can email them and receive friendly, personalized assistance for your particular situation. This is not a conflict of interest because Superior does not sell sewing machines and the articles and email support are available even if you don't purchase Amazon does sell a very few Superior products but not many.) Before Superior, I had no idea how many variables were involved in sewing and learned more about thread than I ever wanted to know, but need to know. 5. TENSION--BOTH UPPER TENSION AND BOBBIN TENSION. This is the first machine I have owned that both could be adjusted. Check manual for what correct tension should look like and how to adjust (admittedly the manual is not extremely clear). Bobbin tension is tightened or loosened by a screw at the bottom of bobbin case, and upper thread tension is adjusted by the small knob on the left side midway down. This knob has numbers, but they are essentially useless (even Brother agrees). They are there just to show the concept of righty tighty, lefty loosey--again, trial and error. 6. The LARGE DIAL TO THE RIGHT adjusts the stitch length, NOT the Tension. 7. Always keep the top thread guide pulled to maximum height, and make sure thread is coming out from the correct direction. Thread stands can also help although I have not tried one. Amazon sells these, several kinds. 8. If you use cone spools or slippery thread, you can purchase netting that will keep it from sliding and bunching at the bottom. 9. I have not yet figured out the best setting for the FEED DOG in various situations, but I do adjust it often if feeding seems difficult so far staying mostly within the light green area. Bottom line, your problem could be caused by any, all or some of the above factors. Good luck if anyone finds this answer useful. I can add photos, I think, if needed. Pretty sure this is the longest question answer I have ever written so I am not going to re-read, sorry for any typos or excess rambling. |
Question: | I have never serged before, I need a very simple to thread machine. any suggestions for me |
Answer: | Throat space is the area to the right of the needle when seated at the machine. It is the open area between the needle and the vertical side of the machine that determines how much fabric might fit comfortably within that space when sewing on your project. |
Question: | My 8 thread Baby Lock recently broke and i am desperate to get a replacement. Will I be satisfied with the Brother 1034D? I have a Brother Inovis an |
Answer: | Yes, there are many feet, including a walking foot. If you want a 1/4 foot with an "edge" on it, you would have to purchase one from the sewing outlet.com ($15.99). I like to sew with the edged 1/4 inch foot. Otherwise, there are many presser feet, including the free motion foot. You can drop the feed dogs to free motion. This is a great quilting machine and has excellent "pin feed," which moves the fabric through like butter. First time threading took longer for me, but after that it was free sailing. If you want to make quilts faster like I do, this is a great machine. I used to quilt with my Bernina, but I like the Brother better. It is more affordable and well made. You should also know that if you use thicker threads (I always use 100% cotton from ConnectingThreads.com), that you will need an 80/12 needle instead of the smaller ones due to the way the machine's tension is set up. Hope this helps,Vivian from Wisconsin |
Question: | I am looking at a tee shirt hem. It has 2 top stiched straight lines and the underside has the loops. Will this machine do this |
Answer: | It measures 8 3/4 inches from needle to right side of machine. It is 6 1/2 inches high from base to top of opening. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Im a beginner at sergering, which one: 1034d or st4031hd and why |
Answer: | A regular sewing machine would be so much better and easier! I also own a Brother SE 400 and LOVE It! I would choose it over the Brother 1034D Serger. |
Question: | Can you serge denim and vinyl |
Answer: | This serger is much easier to thread than others I have owned and used but it's not as simple as threading a regular sewing machine. You must thread in the correct order to be successful. Watch some of the YouTube videos that demonstrate threading this machine. Then what I did was place a sticker underneath each tension dial and with a Sharpie marker, I wrote 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the appropriate sticker. That way I can tell at a glance what order I need to thread in. |
Question: | Can this machine do rolled hems like on tulle and silky fabrics |
Answer: | Ouch. Hopefully, they have good customer support to help you. The 1034D will do what a 4-thread serger does and you won't be disappointed. But that's about it. |
Question: | What is the deferent between st4031hd and 2340cv |
Answer: | If you want that double line of stitching that covers the raw edge of your hem on the back of the work, you can use a regular sewing machine and a double needle. It is a stretchable stitch so you can use it on knits or wovens. Double needles come in a couple different widths and aren't very expensive--a lot cheaper than a cover stitch machine! The wrong side of the fabric will look somewhat like it's been zigzagged. You just use 2 spools of thread on top or a spool and a wound bobbin of the same color. That's why there are usually 2 thread pegs on your machine. Hold the 2 threads together & thread the machine as usual until you get to the last 2 thread guides, then separate them so they don't twist together near the needles. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind or brand of needles I need with this Brother Designio series DZI |
Answer: | Try tightening the tension knob |
Question: | Does it sew heavy material well like it shows in video |
Answer: | I have not used mine yet, but the pin that holds thread is small enough to hold regular spools of thread so I see no reason why it shouldn't work with spool or cone thread. |
Question: | Does this do a flatlock and also do rolled hems |
Answer: | it's fits for all bobbins including Type M, Type L, Type 15 (Universal) or any bobbin with 1/4 inch (0.64 cm) center hole. |
Question: | In the description for this one, under threading, it shows the Brother 1034D- does it thread the exact same way? Can you really use all thread types |
Answer: | I've been using it with out issue, I did find that going around the tensioner an extra time helped. You also may need to adjust the stopping point based on the bobbin style. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I get a book for my serger a handbook |
Answer: | I have not yet tried this method, but, I saw a post from someone who has shared your issue. Here is the post:How to remove crystals with Goo Gone:Use a tissue. I tried cotton rounds, but cotton left fibers behind.Saturate the tissue. You'll use lots of Goo Gone for this.Dab the front and back. Dab at the crystal area from both the front of the fabric and the back of the fabric to loosen the crystal.Don't tug. The crystal will loosen eventually. Don't tug on it the rest of the way or you'll remove some of the silver paint on the back of the crystal. Be patient and keep dabbing at the bugger until it releases on its own. Then you can re-use the crystal (with E6000 as a glue; you can't hotfix it again).Hotfix comes off easily. Hotfix crystals came off the pillowcase the easiest, but the E600 wasn't too bad. The crystals came off, but left a little lump of glue on the lycra. I just peeled off the little lumps.Do a practice run. Glue some crystals to a scrap of lycra before using the Goo Gone on a dress. You can take my word that it doesn't stain, but I'd rather you didn't. Give it a shot for yourself and see if it works for you.Update: lighter fluid, the kind you put in a lighter and is sold alongside tobacco, not charcoal, is terrific at removing crystals, both hotfix and E6000. As always, test first!Hope this answers your question and Good Luck ! |
Question: | Does this have a chain stitch? Thanks |
Answer: | It wouldn't hurt to try, but the package does not specify use for rubber. |
Question: | does this come with a waste basket |
Answer: | If you are gluing costume jewelry, E6000 is a great option. For fine jewelry, I really can't answer that. Thanks! |
Question: | Con este modelo puedo coser lenceria intima, bañadores, boxer, bralette y a las vez tambien jeans |
Answer: | Yes. |

Question: | Will this foot work on Baby Lock imagine serger |
Answer: | Yes, you can. Open the front storage area where you'll find the feed dog lever. |
Question: | what type foot would i need for my machine to be a serger |
Answer: | I've only had this machine a little over a week, so had not tried to hem jeans until just now. The machine sewed through 6 layers of heavy denim and did a good job - I've never had a machine that would do that before! So far, I REALLY love this machine, as it's pretty straightforward to learn how to use. The only thing I've had trouble with is making buttonholes, but I haven't spent much time at it yet! |
Question: | Does this foot work on the 1034D (Brother Babylock?) machine |
Answer: | I used it to make my granddaughter two skirts and a kimono out of fine tulle and it sewed beautifully with no problems, also dance costumes of fine tulle and silky appliques on same. It’s a dream to sew with. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought that incredible product. Can I use your thread image to sell my embroidery? Thank you |
Answer: | Yes, be my guest. |
Question: | anyone have a solution for the labels falling off |
Answer: | goto walmart and buy some clear lite weight plastic you can cut an wrap it around each spool take number off each spool clear tape it to clear plastic on side. |
Question: | Are these threads good quality for the brother pe 770? and pe 780d |
Answer: | They are working well on my brother 770. I didn't get a thread chart so they emailed one to me. I looked up the numbers and wrote down the 4 digit code that's usually on designs I download. Also, I found that if I use a box cutter to slightly cut the little thread holder on the bottom of the spool, if locks the thread in place. Very happy with assortment of colors. |
Question: | Can these be used for sewing or is it just for Embroidery |
Answer: | This is embroidery thread. That being said, there are sewing uses for it. It’s not meant to construct a garment. It won’t hold up to the wear and tear of seams. It can be used for top stitching when you want that shiny look or something decorative. Some buttonholes look good with it. If you are new to sewing or sew very little, don’t buy these. Use regular sewing thread like Coat’s and Clark or Gutterman. |
