8 best quilting machine needles
Quilting machine needles are specialized sewing machine needles designed for quilting projects. Quilting involves sewing together multiple layers of fabric to create a quilt, and these needles are specifically tailored to provide the best results for this craft. Here's what you should know about quilting machine needles:
Needle Type: Quilting machine needles are available in various types, including universal, quilting, and specialty needles. Quilting needles are specifically designed for quilting tasks and are often preferred for their performance.
Needle Size: Quilting needles come in different sizes or gauges, typically indicated by a number such as 70/10, 80/12, or 90/14. The choice of needle size depends on the thickness of the fabrics being used in your quilting project. Thinner fabrics may require smaller needles, while thicker fabrics need larger ones.
Needle Point: The needle point refers to the tip of the needle. Quilting machine needles commonly have a sharp or slightly rounded point. Sharp points are suitable for densely woven fabrics, while slightly rounded points are better for knits and softer materials.
Needle Eye: The eye of the needle should be large enough to accommodate the thread you plan to use for quilting. It's essential to match the thread size to the needle eye size for smooth stitching.
Needle Material: Needles are typically made from various materials, including steel, chrome-plated steel, or titanium-coated steel. The choice of material can impact the needle's durability and smoothness when sewing.
Needle Shank: Check the needle shank type to ensure compatibility with your sewing machine. Most quilting needles have a flat shank, but some machines may require a different shank design.
Thread Compatibility: Quilting machine needles are compatible with a wide range of quilting threads, including cotton, polyester, and specialty quilting threads. Make sure your needle is suitable for the thread you plan to use.
Specialty Needles: Some quilting machine needles are designed for specific quilting techniques, such as free-motion quilting or ruler work. These specialty needles may have unique features to enhance their performance in these applications.
Replacing Needles: It's important to regularly replace quilting machine needles, as they can become dull or damaged over time. A fresh needle ensures smoother stitching and prevents fabric snags.
Needle Brand: Various needle brands manufacture quilting machine needles. Popular brands like Schmetz, Organ, and Klasse offer high-quality options.
Machine Compatibility: Ensure that the quilting machine needles you choose are compatible with your sewing machine's make and model.Different machines may require specific needle types or shank designs.
In summary, quilting machine needles are specialized needles designed for quilting projects. They come in different sizes, points, and materials to accommodate various fabric types and thread sizes. Choosing the right needle for your quilting project is essential to achieve smooth and precise stitching while minimizing fabric damage or distortion.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would these fit a morse fotomatic iii (model |
Answer: | You can try that, but I have found using a Schmitz Microtex 90/14 works much better. They are sharper and with multiple layers work much better-no skipped stitches and better penetration. Otherwise, for most sewing I use an 80/12 universal. Just a thought |
Question: | will these fit a sailrite sewing machine |
Answer: | Unfortunately, there is no cut and dry answer. It depends upon the sewing machine, the thread, and the material. You might have to experiment. Our guess is that you'll have to use a larger needle (i.e., size 90/14, 100/16) to get through the thick material. Depending upon the actual material, you might have to choose a different point as well. |
Question: | I have a baby lock rachel, i'm sewing 4 layers of quilting cotton. should i use universal 90!14 needle |
Answer: | If your Singer uses standard needles, then yes you can use these. Both of my Singers can use them, as well as my Kenmore and BabyLock machines. This is my favorite brand no matter what type of sewing machine work I am doing. All of their needles are top of the line. |
Question: | Will the 80/12 needle work well with 3 layers of thick material |
Answer: | These needles fit most home sewing machines. I am not certain that they will fit an industrial machine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these be used on a White sewing machine |
Answer: | I think the 75/11 works better for metallic thread |
Question: | The description says these particular needles have a rounded tip. A good choice for cotton fabric quilt piecing |
Answer: | Yes, i use these most of the time. It was a little difficult sewing cotton and satin together with them but paying a little extra attention was all i needed to do. I generally sew with cottons since i am a quilter. |
Question: | Are these needles especially good for metallic threads |
Answer: | Yes, you can use SCHMETZ Universal Needles in your Morse Fotomatic III (Model 4300). Your machine uses regular, flat shank, household sewing machine needles (needle system 130/705 H, also known as 15x1). |
Question: | Is this a good needle for general projects and most fabrics |
Answer: | You don't mention a model number so I can't tell. As Abby mentioned, if you have one of the industrial machines, then no, these will not fit. These are household sewing machine needles with a flat shank (needle system 130/705 H, also known as 15x1 H). |
Product description
Designed for:
The Schmetz microtex 80/12 and quilting needles are designed to be used for quilting and piecing. They are made using quality high carbon steel wire mixed with nickel. This makes them remarkably strong, and hard to break. They will also not corrode or rust for a very long time.
Compatible with:
These sewing machine needles use the 130/705 H system, which is compatible with most home sewing machines, including Brother, Baby Lock, Bernette, Bernina, Elna, EuroPro, Husqvarna/Viking, Janome, Juki, Kenmore, Necchi, New Home, Pfaff, Simplicity, Singer, and White.
Shank:
The Schmetz sewing machine needles come with flat shanks, which make them fit more easily into your machine, ensuring the perfect stitch every time. This reduces the risk of breakage while also giving you an easier time as you replace or try to fit them into your machine for the first time.
Tip:
Quilting machine needles: They have slightly rounded points that are designed for quilting. The point is also tapered, which makes it ideal for penetrating through layers of fabric
Microtex 80/12: The sharp point is great for creating beautiful topstitching, edge stitching, and perfectly formed straight stitches for quilt piecing on medium-sized fabric.
Threads:
Quilting: The most common thread type for this needle is cotton and polyester. However, silk and metallic threads can also be used to add life and color to your quilting.
Fabrics:
Most fabrics used in quilting are heirloom quality fabrics, usually made of cotton, wool, polyester, and wadding.
Microtex 80/12: bamboo, brocade, coated material, cork, crepe, foils, microfiber, nylon, oil cloth, polyester, poplin, silk, vinyl, and waxed cloth.
