I was concerned about sewing through so many layers and might need to get a special presser foot. I did not need anything extra. not. It is a great machine!

Answer:	Yes, it is a good machine especially for a total beginner. Why? Because 1. It's not one of those toys going for $25.00 that breaks as soon as you plug it in, causes frustration and you end up quitting; and 2. Janome is one of the top 3 BEST sewing machine makers in the world. They stand behind their products and they do not disappoint. Very few Janomes end up in the repair shop. You want to start out with something simple so you can avoid confusion and learn the basics like I did. This machine is simple. If you have a good teacher (yeah, Youtube can be very helpful), follow the instruction manual, take your time and start with small simple projects you will do fine on this machine. This is why so many schools buy this very model for their sewing students in home ec class. This machine is white just like in the photo. It comes with a 5 pack of spare universal needles size 12 and maybe 6 spare bobbins. You should buy needles since you should change needles every project or every 4 hours of sewing time which ever comes first. Janome Brand, Organ or Schmetz flat shank are good. If you need more bobbins I would find a certified Janome dealer to buy from. Not all bobbins fit all machines. Do not use anything SINGER with this machine. Answer:	I can't tell you anything about Pfaff because I have never owned a Pfaff. When I bought the Janome HD3000 I was looking for a heavy duty sewing machine that would sew through layered heavy fabrics, such as denim, etc. I had a Singer at the time, and had always owned Singers, and had noticed that with each new Singer I bought, the quality was less than the previous Singer. I don't know what happened to Singer, but in my opinion they have put out a less and less quality product over the past 10 to 15 years. The question I asked in my search engine was something like "what is a good heavy duty sewing machine". That led me to a demonstration video where I watched someone using the Janome to sew through the depth of fabric layers that I needed. And when I bought the machine, it worked just like in the video. It sails through layers of fabric that used to invariably tangle up and stop the Singer.

Answer:	This particular sewing machine has metal gears! MOST have nylon gears now. I am buying this machine! I just got off the phone with a shop that sells this particular Janome. They also repair Janome's but he said the gears wouldn't be an issue with this one. It's a very sturdy machine. The type of gears a machine has is the main thing that determines how rugged the machine is. If it has nylon gears they can shatter with age and stress. The latter is the reason I'm looking for a new machine. I have an old metal Singer Stylist and the nylon gears just shattered after 48 years of age. I sewed everything from horse halters to my wedding dress on it but I was told it will cost over $200 to replace the gears alone. Adjustments following that would be extra.

I bought this to take to quilting classes because it is lightweight. You can buy an embroidery only machine for approx. the same price and usually the combination machines are higher in cost. Answer:	We bought the machine for our daughter, who sews dog collars- 2 layers of cotton webb, hemp or polyester webbing plus 2 layers of decorative ribbon. It sews through all the layers without a problem. She has also sewn 2 layers of jacket lining & it was fine. Something you might want to do is check out a Janome dealer, who might have machines to try out.

Answer:	I haven't tested all thread. T-40 will be safe. Topstitching threads are also fine with an appropriate topstitching needle. Also when using heavier threads decrease the top tension and if using it in the bobbin, it may also need adjusting. Usually I keep two bobbin cases on hand, one specifically for T-50 and the other for specialty threads or heavier threads. I only use this machine for travel or just straight sewing. Answer:	This stand does not sit on the ground. As the package says... its a "table" and "lap" stand.
Question:	How fast is this machine
Answer:	Yes, and I love it. No leaning forward. it brings your work to you. The material stays in place. I couldn't cross stitch without it.
Question:	Will this sewing machine sew heavy leathers like belts
Answer:	The stand is 14 inches from the bottom. However, it is adjustable and the actual scroll can be adjusted down an inch, 3 inches and 5 inches. Hope that helps.
Question:	Is this machine worth taking a chance on? There are enough very negative reviews to make me reconsider
Answer:	Try using twill tape. Staple one side of twill to the wooden frame. Then, sew the fabric along the "V" of the tape to hold the fabric in place.

Answer:	The 3160 is a computerized machine vs the HD3000 which is fully mechanical. This means there is a needle up/needle down button, thread cutting button, and start/stop button. The 3160 comes with a 1/4" foot and a walking foot, as well as an extension table and the HD3000 does not. Hope this helps.

Answer:	This is a standard needle with a flat back on it.
Question:	How many needle positions
Answer:	Purple Tip Needles are designed to prevent skipped stitches with heavy fabrics, including knits, while doing sewing and embroidering. They feature a ball point tip to prevent fabric thread breakage and a special cobra shaped head to form a proper needle thread loop so that it prevents skipped stitches caused by the fluctuation of the fabric. Purple Tip Needles are recommended for embroidery with a high-density design and/or thick fabric, fluffier thread like cotton, quilting multiple layers which normally resist needle penetration, sewing knit, tricot, and synthetic fabrics like thick polyester. Red tip needs are a size 14 and have a larger eye of the needle to accommodate heavier threads, pampers delicate metallics that tend to shred and split, and makes needle threading easier.. Answer:	It is not difficult to determine if the needles you have been sold are genuine Janome needles. All Janome’s needles are actually made in Taiwan by Organ. The needles will have “Organ” and the size of needle stamped into the rounded side of the shaft. Regardless of how they are packaged, they are the genuine article if the shaft is stamped with the manufacturers name, “Organ.” You will never find a needle stamped with Janome. Janome doesn’t make their own needles. Instead they have them private labeled by Organ.
