12 best quilting batting

Quilting batting, often referred to simply as "batting," is a crucial component in the process of making quilts. It is the layer of material sandwiched between the quilt top and the backing fabric. Batting serves several essential functions in quilting and comes in various types, each offering different properties to the finished quilt.

Here are some key points about quilting batting:

  1. Insulation and Warmth: The primary purpose of quilting batting is to provide insulation and warmth to the quilt. The type and thickness of the batting determine the level of warmth it offers. For colder climates or heavier quilts, a thicker batting may be used.

  2. Thickness and Loft: Quilting battings vary in thickness, often referred to as "loft." Low loft batting is thinner and provides a flatter appearance, while high loft batting is thicker and creates a more puffy or raised effect in the finished quilt. The choice of loft depends on the desired look and feel of the quilt.

  3. Material: Batting can be made from various materials, including cotton, polyester, wool, silk, and blends of these fibers. Each type of batting has distinct qualities. For example, cotton batting is breathable and has a traditional look, while polyester batting is easy to care for and provides more loft.

  4. Quilting Ease: The type of batting can influence the ease of quilting. Some battings are easier to quilt by hand, while others work better with machine quilting.Polyester battings, for instance, tend to be more stable and are often preferred for machine quilting.

  5. Durability and Washability: Consider the durability and washability of the batting when selecting it for your quilt. Some batting materials are more resilient and can withstand frequent washing, while others may require more delicate care.

  6. Allergies: If the quilt will be used by individuals with allergies, it's important to choose hypoallergenic batting options. Wool and silk battings are naturally hypoallergenic, while some synthetic battings are treated to be hypoallergenic.

  7. Pre-packaged vs. Roll: Batting is available pre-packaged in standard sizes or on rolls that allow you to cut it to your desired dimensions. Rolls are more versatile, as you can customize the batting to fit your specific project.

  8. Quilt Design: The choice of batting can influence the overall design and appearance of the quilt. Some battings are better suited for traditional quilting patterns, while others work well for more modern or artistic designs.

  9. Cost: The cost of quilting batting varies based on the material, size, and quality. High-quality natural fiber battings like silk or wool tend to be more expensive than synthetic options.

In summary, quilting batting is a critical component in the art of quiltmaking. It not only provides warmth and insulation but also contributes to the overall look and feel of the finished quilt. The choice of batting material, loft, and thickness should be made based on your specific quilting project's requirements and desired outcomes.

Product description

Warm and Natural Cotton Batting: Twin Size 90 by 72-inch. This batting will not separate; bunch or beard. User questions & answers

Question: some say very thin, not warm enough and others say perfect, warm...which is it? ohio winter nights
Answer: Ohio is not where I would consider cold (I am from Maine... 30 below zero before wind chill), this is summer weight for us. I would use wool batting for winter.
Question: What is the loft (or thickness) of this batting
Answer: It is not a thick or lofty batting but a solid one... it works well with something you would be laundering as it does not shift..
Question: Did you wash and dry the batt before putting it in the quilt? What happens
Answer: You NEVER wash or dry a batting alone, without a top or backing. It will become a matted mess of fibers. You may wash the fabrics before you make your quilt top, or before sandwiching it with the batting, but NEVER wash the batting by itself. Wait until after it is sandwiched, quilted, and bound in a quilt, first.
Question: Is this microwaveable
Answer: NO! It's only 87.5% cotton and 12.5% polymer (SYNTHETIC) - grrrrr! I wish I knew this before I bought it. Everything about this is misleading on the surface: "Cotton", "Warm and NATURAL", "100% USA grown cotton"... EXCEPT that the cotton is only one part of this batting, the rest of it is SYNTHETIC and easily flammable in the microwave. Crap. I'm really annoyed about this. From the description: "This 100-percent USA grown cotton is punched with hundreds of needles through a thin base material (polymer fibers) to prevent tearing; shifting; migrating or creeping through the cover fabric making it 87-1/2-percent cotton/12-1/2-percent polymer (SYNTHETIC*) fibers." * MY WORD AND EMPHASIS

User questions & answers

Question: Are there separate pieces in the package? i am making a baby quilt and i want one piece about 40x
Answer: The batting is one flat piece. It’s a big waste of money since it’s maybe a quarter inch thick if that and very flimsy. I wish I never bought it. I ended up going to Michael’s and buying batting by the bag to complete my project.
Question: Does this come as a roll? Or is it loose polyester fill ? Ty
Answer: Its a roll. Batting usually means that it is in a roll for quilting. Loose polyester is described as fill.
Question: Would you use this product in placemats or mug rugs
Answer: Batting is light and airy but might be too much for mug rug.
Question: How thick (in inches) is this batting
Answer: approx. 3/8"

User questions & answers

Question: I would describe this as uneven, with little hard bits...matted fibers, I suppose. Some tiny, some larger. Is yours like this? Is it still ok to use
Answer: I haven't used mine yet - still in the bag & I'm not at home for a while, sorry - but since one use of this would be a crib quilt, I would not expect any lumps or hard bits.
Question: Can I use this in a dog bed
Answer: This is very thin for a dog bed. I would suggest a 4inch thick foam for a dog bed.
Question: I'm wanting to make clouds. Will this work
Answer: This will work. It’s a flat batting and easy to cut with scissors.
Question: Have not received this item refund my money
Answer: Please co tact the seller or Amazon.

Make sure you keep your iron moving, pressing approximately 3-4 seconds in each area. Once you have covered the entire surface area of your quilt, allow the quilt to cool. You may then begin quilting by hand or machine. Shrinkage of 3-5% and may be quilted up to 4" apart.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used for reupholstering dining chairs
Answer: I shipped from China, because of the COVID-19, the number of flights is reduced, the freight is particularly expensive. I can’t send you the yard for the time being. I'm very sorry, I can’t meet your needs. Please see which pattern do you like? Contact me again a week later, if the delivery can be faster, I can ship it to you.
Question: Is this one large piece folded up? Or sheets
Answer: I am able to cut two face mask patterns of 9.5 x 6.5 inches apiece per quarter. There will not be enough fabric to cut lengths for 18 inch ties, but I get around that by cutting shorter tie strips and sewing them together to make 18 inch lengths.
Question: Can this be used in the microwave to keep warmth for things like potato bags? Bowl cozies
Answer: If there was any shrinkage after I washed my fabric it was not enough to be noticed...my opinion.
Question: Is this thin enough for under a sheet of fabric on covered bulletin board
Answer: I've never dyed THIS particular fabric but have dyed cottons in the past with no problem. Don't see why this fabric should have any issues.

User questions & answers

Question: I am making a spread, and tacking and not quilting the entire piece. Will this work, or am I better off with poly? I'm afraid this is too thin
Answer: I like the poly batting that is fluffier than this one. I didn't find it very warm when I used my quilt. You can get poly that is better.
Question: I ordered this package on Oct 2 and I still have not received it
Answer: Check with Amazon Customer Service, then your carrier. If the package was delivered and not signed for it may have been stolen or lost.
Question: Is it 100% cotton
Answer: per the back of the bag I t says: Natural Cotton 87.5% Polypropylene 12.5%. Until you asked and I looked, I never knew it was not 100% cotton. Either way, I still like using it.
Question: I do not quilt or own a quilt, but I need to fill a duvet cover..Does this work well for that? Can it be cut to size without any problems
Answer: I do not quilt but bought this for the lady who made my quilt. I do know that it can be cut to size without any problems. It is not very thick because she said the thicker version is harder to quilt. Since you are not quilting it, you might like the thicker version better for your duvet.
