Additional Instructions & Tips for Sewing with the Stippling & Darning & Freehand Embroidery Foot
To attach the Darning & Embroidery Foot, first remove the regular presser foot and presser foot holder. Refer to your sewing machine manual and depending on your particular sewing machine model, either cover or lower the feed dogs to disengage them.
Free Motion Quilting:
Set your sewing machine for straight stitch. No additional setting is needed for length because you determine the length of stitch my how quickly you move the quilt under the needle. With your prepared quilt top, batting and backing, hold the quilt with both hands under the needle. Put the presser foot down and sew a few stitches in place to secure threads. Move the quilt around in a meandering fashion, stitching a continuous line pattern to quilt the quilt.
Thread Painting:
Use a straight stitch and free motion fill shapes with thread. This is a fun and unique way to sew machine made embroidery with beautiful texture. Use a removable fabric marking tool to draw your design on the fabric surface. Fill in each design element with the thread colors desired. Experiment with various types of threads. For example, variegated threads can add interesting dimension. Rayon threads add a beautiful sheen. Metallic threads can be a nice touch for holiday projects or for added drama. When thread painting with rayon or metallic thread, use a SINGER chromium embroidery needle for best results.
Darning and Repair:
You can repair tears and holes in fabric with the Darning & Embroidery Foot. Apply a small scrap of fabric to the back of the area in need of repair. Back the area with a layer of stabilizer. Select straight stitch and sew over the torn area in two steps moving the fabric back and forth to free-motion stitch. In step one, sew back and forth in a vertical motion to cover the affected area. In step two, sew back and forth in a horizontal motion. Once the area has been covered in stitches sew in place a few stitches to secure and trim away excess backing fabric and stabilizer.
Free Motion Monogramming & Embroidery:
You can monogram using free motion with the Darning & Embroidery Foot! Select a ZigZag stitch and set the stitch length to zero on your sewing machine. Mark the desired monogram letters onto your fabric with a removable fabric marking tool. Back your fabric with stabilizer and optionally hoop your fabric. (Hand held hoops are sold as an optional accessory.) Stitch slowly guiding the fabric so that your sewing machine stitches evenly along the lines of the letters. The stitch length is determined by the speed at which you move the fabric. With a little practice this technique can be used to personalize many projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you embroider with this machine |
Answer: | Even though this machine is not an embroidery machine, you can learn to do beautiful embroidery work on it by learning free motion embroidery. In fact, one of the cool presser feet that comes with this machine is the open toe darning foot, which is a bonus!... People who wish to embroider, use this foot to do so. You Tube has many fine videos that will show you how to do free motion embroidery, on a regular machine, with just an everyday wooden hoop. Just type in free motion embroidery tutorials in the you tube search area, and you will be busy for hours, learning to this method. Enjoy! |
Question: | Is this easy to use |
Answer: | Depends what you want it for. Simple sewing like clothing or piecing quilt tops should be okay - putting quilts together NO! The throat is not big enough for free motion quilting and it doesn’t do well with bulky material. Your needle will snap, bobbin will have a nervous breakdown and you’ll get error codes that will make you want to pull your hair out when you try to clear them. But if you set on buying this model or the CS6000i here is the skinny - it is easy to use if you stick to the book or YouTube for help and FOLLOW the step by step instructions. It’s a cute machine for newbies but an albatross around experienced quilters necks |
Question: | how could 2,000 people give this a good review and another 150 absolutely hate the same machine |
Answer: | Because it's a review, some reviews aren't anything more than "it sucks". But for only 150 people out of 2,000 people don't like or understand the machine, that's pretty damn good. |
Question: | is this one suggested for a beginner |
Answer: | This would be a GREAT machine for a beginner. I've sewn for at least 60 yrs and have had machines that cost as much as $2,000, and to me this is the best. I'm an avid believer that one should read the manual first and recommend for you to do this. You will be able to nicely grow into this machine and should have no regrets with the purchase. I love idea that you can sew without using a presser foot, but can control your stitches on the front of the machine. Love to be able to see when the bobbin is getting low, various speeds, even some decorative stitches for you. It's quiet, fun, light weight for taking to classes, or for my motorhome. Can't say enough, I JUST LOVE THIS MACHINE, it's all I could ever want. Please read the manual. Hope this helps. JMD |

User questions & answers
Question: | The picture shows 7 differnt design/project ideas booklets but the package I recieved only contained the "Getting started guide" Where are the others |
Answer: | No you cannot trade them in to my knowledge. I put mine cartridges in my recycle bin since my community recycles. |
Question: | What is NOT in this bundle that would be good to buy along side with it as a gift |
Answer: | They have different cartridges for different machines. Some will laminate. I just use mine for making stickers so it's just sticky on one side. It's also a great way to make cheap glitter paper. Just sprinkle on the sticky side and then run it back through again on the other side. |
Question: | How do you obtain the digital content? There was nothing in the packet giving access to this |
Answer: | Watch the videos for both the 500 and the 510, which are located with the various picture angles of these products, on the left. The 500 is simply a sticker maker, with permanent and re-postionalbe adhesive refill options. The 510 does the same, except has the ability to do more, with a variety of refills. Simply choose the machine that is best for your own needs! Good Luck!! |
Question: | For anyone that has bought this, is this bundle that same one that comes with the Cricut Explore Air 2 for |
Answer: | It does come with an Adhesive roll but it’s the permanent one. To have an adjustable adhesive you would need to purchase that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use a MacBook with this |
Answer: | I also was curious, and went to the website. It definitely states that it works with Windows 10. Great program. I have Embrilliance Essentials, Enthusiast, AlphaTricks and Thumbnailer. Love them all. If you don't already have any of them, I suggest you look into them. It's amazing what you can do with your existing designs. Because Embrilliance programs are very user-friendly (and affordable!), I now have my sights on StitchArtist 2..... |
Question: | Does the PE800 have the ability to reverse and redo or go back over stitches in case the thread breaks |
Answer: | You will be using the File Explorer that is actually on your computer. This does not use an internet browser because you are looking only at files that actually reside on your computer's hard drives. Look for the Folder icon or press the Windows key + E and File explorer will open. That is what the Thumbnailer uses. Hope that helps. |
Question: | What software do you use to convert hus formatted designs to be used on this machine? thanks |
Answer: | Since designs are not stored on the software, so there is no limitations that I can see. This software allows me to see my thousands of embroidery designs in small to large icons. It works very, very well for me at a very reasonable price. |
Question: | Can this machine embrodier on leather |
Answer: | No. It's a software to view your designs as a thumbnail when opening a folder on your PC. So instead of just seeing the name of the file you see the actual design as an icon in your folder. It's bern a lifesaver for me because you don't have to open the design to see what it is. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this engraver supposed to have a rotating tip? I just got it for Christmas and it only vibrates. I wanted to be sure it isn't just broken |
Answer: | I truly don't understand BC it states right in the title that it rotates yet everyone acts like we are supposed to ignore the information?!?! |
Question: | I was wondering how this product holds up while etching on granite |
Answer: | Granite has a hardness of 6-7 and the carbide steel point has a hardness of of 8.5 so thepoint should win out. It depends on how detailed a design you are trying to do since thetip will round some in use. There is the heavy duty #9929 point as an alternative. |
Question: | Hello. this is going to sound like a really silly question. But how do i inset the tip of the engraver? what size screwdriver would i need |
Answer: | Good luck. It is a tiny screw. It took me over an hour of trying to get the tip inserted and held in place by the screw before I discovered there was no possible way. A set screw would have worked well, but this engraver needs a redesign. Consider how much force is going to be applied to the tip, between the pressure needed to engrave your item, as well as the vibration produced by the machine and it makes no sense why such a tiny screw was used. Please read all the reviews before buying. |
Question: | is the tip on this tool supposed to rotate or just vibrate? I just got it this and it isn't rotating. I wanted to be sure it isn't broken |
Answer: | That’s why it’s described as a vibrating engraver not a rotary tool. |

User questions & answers
Question: | use as a sewing machine |
Answer: | I know this is an old question and some of my answers are repeats, but if you are still using this machine and haven't come up with an answer maybe one of the following solutions from my own experience will help you. I love this machine and therefore completed an extensive search for answers to my questions which included: Brother Support (not that helpful), studying the manual carefully & repeatedly, asking sew 'n' vac store employees and lots of Google searches. Here, in no particular order, are advice/solutions that solved my gathering/bunching issue and many other issues. 1. PROPER UPPER THREADING: Regarding threading, let me advise that the thread will jump out of the correct lineup at times so if your stitch changes in a bad way, check that first. Also, I had to use a clip over a piece of foam on the last guide before the needle guide because it popped out constantly, regardless of checking, rechecking and having others check my threading. 2. PROPER BOBBIN THREADING: I am forgetful so actually check the manual each time I thread a bobbin. Improper bobbin threading will really mess you up. 3. CORRECT NEEDLE SIZE & TYPE for specific fabric--VERY IMPORTANT!! Some of this is trial and error. Not all needle/thread guidelines I found applied to my situation. I tried Schmetz--130/705, HaX1 of 15x1--the Brother manual states this as an alternative, but Organ HLX5 (not sold locally) is best. DO NOT use the Schmetz "UNIVERSAL" needles if you are working with a fabric that specifically requires sharp or ball point. The Universal has a slight ball point--not sharp not full ball point. Learned that the hard way. 4. CORRECT THREAD FOR SIZE OF NEEDLE, TYPE OF FABRIC AND EXPECTED END RESULT. (superiorthreads.com is an awesome resource for this and many other sewing, quilting, embroidery questions. They have tons of educational articles and you can email them and receive friendly, personalized assistance for your particular situation. This is not a conflict of interest because Superior does not sell sewing machines and the articles and email support are available even if you don't purchase Amazon does sell a very few Superior products but not many.) Before Superior, I had no idea how many variables were involved in sewing and learned more about thread than I ever wanted to know, but need to know. 5. TENSION--BOTH UPPER TENSION AND BOBBIN TENSION. This is the first machine I have owned that both could be adjusted. Check manual for what correct tension should look like and how to adjust (admittedly the manual is not extremely clear). Bobbin tension is tightened or loosened by a screw at the bottom of bobbin case, and upper thread tension is adjusted by the small knob on the left side midway down. This knob has numbers, but they are essentially useless (even Brother agrees). They are there just to show the concept of righty tighty, lefty loosey--again, trial and error. 6. The LARGE DIAL TO THE RIGHT adjusts the stitch length, NOT the Tension. 7. Always keep the top thread guide pulled to maximum height, and make sure thread is coming out from the correct direction. Thread stands can also help although I have not tried one. Amazon sells these, several kinds. 8. If you use cone spools or slippery thread, you can purchase netting that will keep it from sliding and bunching at the bottom. 9. I have not yet figured out the best setting for the FEED DOG in various situations, but I do adjust it often if feeding seems difficult so far staying mostly within the light green area. Bottom line, your problem could be caused by any, all or some of the above factors. Good luck if anyone finds this answer useful. I can add photos, I think, if needed. Pretty sure this is the longest question answer I have ever written so I am not going to re-read, sorry for any typos or excess rambling. |
Question: | I have never serged before, I need a very simple to thread machine. any suggestions for me |
Answer: | Throat space is the area to the right of the needle when seated at the machine. It is the open area between the needle and the vertical side of the machine that determines how much fabric might fit comfortably within that space when sewing on your project. |
Question: | My 8 thread Baby Lock recently broke and i am desperate to get a replacement. Will I be satisfied with the Brother 1034D? I have a Brother Inovis an |
Answer: | Yes, there are many feet, including a walking foot. If you want a 1/4 foot with an "edge" on it, you would have to purchase one from the sewing outlet.com ($15.99). I like to sew with the edged 1/4 inch foot. Otherwise, there are many presser feet, including the free motion foot. You can drop the feed dogs to free motion. This is a great quilting machine and has excellent "pin feed," which moves the fabric through like butter. First time threading took longer for me, but after that it was free sailing. If you want to make quilts faster like I do, this is a great machine. I used to quilt with my Bernina, but I like the Brother better. It is more affordable and well made. You should also know that if you use thicker threads (I always use 100% cotton from ConnectingThreads.com), that you will need an 80/12 needle instead of the smaller ones due to the way the machine's tension is set up. Hope this helps,Vivian from Wisconsin |
Question: | I am looking at a tee shirt hem. It has 2 top stiched straight lines and the underside has the loops. Will this machine do this |
Answer: | It measures 8 3/4 inches from needle to right side of machine. It is 6 1/2 inches high from base to top of opening. |

User questions & answers
Question: | An i use it for glass |
Answer: | I really do not know because I have a singer embroidery machines. Works great and love that they are precut |
Question: | What types of inks do you use with this machine |
Answer: | No, it is not an iron-on. I thought I could use it in my 5x7 hoop, but it's too small. It's large for the 4x4 hoop, so there's a lot of waste. I actually pieced it together with a zigzag stitch and used it in the 5x7 hoop and it worked. Overall I was disappointed. |
Question: | Does this come with instructions on how to use it |
Answer: | I've been hand embroidering for almost 60 years, and I've never used a stabilizer as a backing. There is a foam board that sticks to the back of your design. I would advise using that, it also helps when you frame it. Check with a store that sells hand embroidery items and ask them. They could show you products that are up to date, and used for that purpose. This product is for machine embroidery, an entirely different procedure. |
Question: | Does the handle lock down or do you have to hold it down |
Answer: | Because you are using tearaway stabilizer. Is this a denser design? Tear away is great for hand stitching and light stitching. "Redwork", etc. However, on more detailed and denser designs (especially the compact ones), you end up sewing yourself holes in the stabilizer and it no longer does its job. I had a lot of issues with this until I found out what was going on. I never have that problem with cut away stabilizer, which is better for garments and holds up better in the wash, too. I very rarely use tearaway because of this issue. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Year software published? want to know how old it is as no reviews. will it work on the brother aventura (model blmav) embroidery/sewing machine |
Answer: | As for Embrilliance Essentials, yes, it will work with your Brother machine. My Brother machine is .PES format, and there are many formats to choose from with this program. Yes, there is a trial version of Embrilliance Essentials available you can use for a period of time, however, the trial period just doesn't allow you to save anything. I'm slowly but surely taking my time and learning to use Embrilliance Essentials. It is a very good program and I'm very happy I purchased it. |
Question: | If my computer crashes will I be able to redownload this software onto a new compatible pc |
Answer: | Yes, 4x4 (100mm x 100xmm) machines usually have a multiple-position hoop available, and those are built into the Essentials software. Splitting is automatic. There are also hoops built-in for Janome GigaHoop and a couple others. For bigger machines and more advanced hoops, you can get Enthusiast. |
Question: | So is this a disc or usb |
Answer: | Embrilliance makes AlphaTricks for that purpose. You will also find many alphabet collections now come in the .BX format which means you can use the lettering by typing in, similar to a built-in font. And you don't need any purchase for that -- Embrilliance let's you run those fonts with the free version. |
Question: | How long does it take to receive code |
Answer: | You can't convert or save files in .art format, so if your Babylock is older and uses only .art files, Embrilliance won't work for you. It works for any other format, though. |
