14 best circular lace knitting needles
Circular lace knitting needles are specialized knitting tools designed for creating intricate lace patterns and delicate projects. These needles are tailored to the unique needs of lace knitting, offering features that enhance the knitter's ability to work with fine yarns and produce delicate, openwork designs. Here's what you should know about circular lace knitting needles:
Needle Type: Circular lace knitting needles are typically designed as fixed circular needles. They have a short, flexible cord connecting two needle tips. The cord is shorter than that of traditional circular needles, usually around 24 inches or shorter, making them ideal for smaller lace projects.
Needle Tips: The needle tips of circular lace knitting needles are often sharp and pointed to allow for precision when working with intricate lace patterns. This sharpness helps to easily pass the needle through small yarnovers and decreases.
Material: Circular lace knitting needles can be made from various materials, including stainless steel, brass, or wood. The choice of material affects the feel and weight of the needles, and some knitters have personal preferences based on their knitting style.
Cord Material: The cord connecting the needle tips is usually made of a flexible and non-kinking material like nylon or plastic. It's important that the cord is flexible enough to accommodate the delicate lacework without distorting the stitches.
Smooth Joins: A smooth join between the needle tips and the cord is essential for lace knitting. A rough or snaggy join can interfere with the delicate yarnovers and decreases common in lace patterns.
Needle Sizes: Circular lace knitting needles come in various needle sizes to accommodate different lace projects. You can find them in sizes ranging from very fine for laceweight yarns to larger sizes for thicker lace patterns.
Tension Control: Circular lace knitting needles provide good tension control due to the flexible cord and sharp needle tips. This allows you to create even and well-defined lace stitches.
Usage: These needles are primarily used for knitting lace patterns, which often feature intricate stitch combinations, yarnovers, and decreases. The circular design allows you to easily handle the growing fabric as you work, which is especially helpful for large lace shawls and wraps.
Stitch Markers: Lace knitting often requires the use of stitch markers to keep track of pattern repeats. Circular lace knitting needles can accommodate the use of stitch markers placed on the cord or needle tips.
Storage: Many circular lace knitting needle sets come with a storage case or pouch to keep the needles organized and prevent them from getting tangled or damaged.
In summary, circular lace knitting needles are specialized tools designed for knitters who enjoy creating delicate lace projects. They offer features like sharp needle tips, smooth joins, and flexible cords to facilitate the creation of intricate lace patterns. These needles are a valuable addition to the knitting toolkit of those who have a passion for lace knitting and want to achieve beautiful, openwork designs.

User questions & answers
Question: | I am new to knitting and would like my first project to be a shawl in a ball. I think the 24 inch length would work but wonder what would be the best |
Answer: | The label on the yarn will most likely suggest a needle size. If it's a triangular shawl pattern, by the time you get to the bottom of the shawl, it will be bunching up quite a bit so a longer needle (30-40") would work better. If it's a rectangular shawl, 24" might be okay. |
Question: | I am new to knitting and would like my first project to be a shawl in a ball. I think the 24 inch length would work but wonder size needle is best |
Answer: | I’m not sure what you mean exactly by a shawl in a ball other than knitting a shawl from one ball of yarn. The length of a circular needle really depends on the yarn weight and the largest number of stitches you’ll have on the needle. For instance, 200 stitches with a lace weight yarn takes up much less space than 200 stitches with a worsted weight. If you have a needle at home that is the same size as the needle you want to use, and it can be a straight or a circular, cast on 20 stitches in the yarn you want to use and see how much space 20 stitches takes up. 24 inch needles are very serviceable for most projects, but struggling with too many stitches when you’re just beginning might be frustrating. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How long is just the stainless needle part of the 24 inch circulars |
Answer: | The 24"circulars have 5" steel tips. I have these in the 16" length as well the tips are 3.75" and they are comfortable to work with. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many inches long is the needle |
Answer: | Sorry. Had purchased for someone else, so no idea about length. |
Question: | Are the needles supposed to be round? Mine are channeled |
Answer: | This Chaigoo needle is a circular needle. It is not channeled. If you need to have it be straighter drop the needle into boiling water (turn off the heat) for about two minutes. The cable will relax and knitting will be easier. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the cords be used with the regular lace tips |
Answer: | Hello, The cables in this set are the Mini Twist cables. They can only be used with 4 and 5 inch Twist tip sizes US-000 through US-1.5. Thank you for checking. Tracy, Handsome Fibers. |
Question: | Does anyone know the difference between the red & blue sets |
Answer: | Hi, The red set contains tip sizes US-000 through US-3. These tips have the Mini (M) join connection. The blue set contains tip sizes US-4 through US-8. These tips have the Small (S) join connection. I hope this helps and thank you for asking. Handsome Fibers. |
Question: | I don't suppose they be interchangeable with knitters pride cords |
Answer: | None of the Chiaogoo needle tips will work directly with Knitter's Pride cords, regardless of size. They're fundamentally completely incompatible. Knitter's Pride cords have a protruding screw at each end of the cable, and that fits into a socket set into the needle tips. Chiaogoo puts the screw on the end of the needle tips and the socket on the ends of the cables. If you try to pair a Chiaogoo needle tip with a KP cord (whether Knitter's Pride or Knit Picks) you'll end up with two screws and nowhere to put either of them. Although both brands have adapters available to join one cable to another and those could, in theory, join one cable to something-else-with-the-same-end-as-a-cable, it looks like the sizes are also very wrong. I no longer have the KP adapter, but I have ones for the Chiaogoo small and large cables. The L adapter is too big, and the S adapter is too small. This kit uses an even smaller-than-Small "Mini" socket. Since the KP screw end is already larger than the Chiaogoo S, it would be far too big for the Chiaogoo Mini. (The Mini cords that come with this kit are thinner and much more flexible than other Chiaogoo cords, though! They're more pliable than even KP cords, to the point of being a bit floppy. If it's only distaste for stiff Chiaogoo Twist cords that worries you, rather than a perfectly rational fear of taking up collecting a second (third, fourth, whatever, don't look at me like that!) brand of ICNs, you might be very pleased with this set anyway.) |
Question: | what length are the cables in this set |
Answer: | The cables are 5”, 6” and 8” - one of each length - creating 9” thru 14” circulars. The cables are very thin. |

Answer: | I use good old fashioned thimbles for the fingers/thumbs most likely to get stuck (which is usually my opposite thumb). User questions & answers
Question: | What is the length of the tip (tapered end |
Answer: | Not sure if you're asking about the length of the stainless steel needle or just the tapered part of the stainless steel needle...but from the very tip of the stainless needle to where the stainless needle meets the red cable, it is 12.5 cm (or just shy of 5"). If you're talking about only the TAPERED tip of the stainless needle (which enters into the stitches), it is 1.5 cm ( about 5/8"). The other end of the stainless needle tapers into the red cable, too, with a very smooth transition. These dimensions are for the 4 mm (Size 6), Circular 32" ChiaoGoo Red Lace, which is featured in this question. I hope this answers your question! |
Question: | is this a good length for knitting a scarf |
Answer: | Hi, you can use a shorter length for your scarf.. It also depends on how many stitches you are going to cast on. If you have a 24 inch should be good unless you are casting on to work your knit pattern in horizontal then use the 32 inch, if your going to knit shorter rows in length then use a smaller 24 inch circular needles. If you haven't used ChiaGoo needles before you will love working with these circular brand. They are easy to work with. I have several different size which I use all the time. Good luck on your scarf and happy knitting. Cecile |
Question: | Does this needle come in a size 5 36 inch cambe |
Answer: | No, it comes in a 32" or a 40" but no 36" thank you Tara Alpaca Direct |
Question: | Do these needles have the size printed directly on the needle |
Answer: | Hi Lauren, Yes they do. All of the Red Lace circulars have the size laser imprinted on the needles. Thank you for asking. Tracy, Handsome Fibers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these needles fixed? Or can they be detached from this cable and put onto another |
Answer: | Only three needles are needed because they bend in the middle. You keep your stitches on 2 needles instead of 4 and use the third needle to knit onto. These are particularly helpful for knitters who have not learned to use traditional double points because the three needles are a lot easier for beginners to manage than five. |
Question: | How long are the needle tips |
Answer: | These needles come in a package. |
Question: | Is the 40" cable long enough to knit a 60" wide blanket |
Answer: | Length from tip to cable is 3”, cable itself between tips is 2 1/4”, and tip to tip is 8 1/4” |
Question: | How long is the actual needle |
Answer: | Yes, but personally I do not like these, they are hard to grasp.l, very uncomfortable. I use just regular double pointed needles to do socks. |

Question: | How long are stainless tips |
Answer: | The stainless steel needle measures 5” long. The tips are about 5/8” long. The 32” is from needle point to needle point so the cord is 22”. These are excellent needles. The join is very good. I am an avid knitter and have purchased many pairs of ChiaoGoo needles. |
