14 best soap making supplies
Soap making supplies encompass a wide range of materials, tools, and ingredients used in the craft of creating homemade soap. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced soap maker, having the right supplies is crucial for successful soap production. Here are some common soap making supplies:
Soap Base or Oils: Soap making typically starts with a soap base, which can be a pre-made melt-and-pour soap base or a combination of oils and lye (cold process soap). The choice of base or oils depends on the soap-making method you prefer.
Fragrance Oils or Essential Oils: These are used to add scents to your soap. Essential oils are natural plant extracts, while fragrance oils are synthetic scents. Choose scents that are skin-safe and compatible with soap making.
Colorants: Colorants, such as micas, pigments, or natural additives like herbs and clays, are used to give your soap vibrant colors. Ensure the colorants are safe for use on the skin.
Lye (Sodium Hydroxide): Lye is an essential ingredient in cold process soap making. It is used to saponify oils and create soap.Safety precautions must be taken when working with lye.
Safety Gear: When handling lye, you should wear safety gear including goggles, gloves, and a long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin and eyes.
Mixing Tools: You'll need various tools for mixing your soap ingredients, including stainless steel or heat-resistant plastic containers, mixing spoons, and stick blenders for thorough blending.
Soap Molds: Soap molds come in various shapes and sizes and are used to shape your soap bars. They can be made of silicone, plastic, wood, or other materials.
Thermometer: A thermometer is essential for monitoring the temperature of your soap mixture, ensuring it reaches the correct temperature for successful soap making.
Scale: Accurate measurements of ingredients are crucial in soap making, so a digital kitchen scale is recommended.
Soap Cutters: After your soap has hardened, soap cutters help you slice it into individual bars with clean, straight edges.
Stirring and Mixing Tools: Spatulas, whisks, and stirring rods are handy for mixing in additives, fragrances, and colorants.
Lye Calculator: This tool helps you calculate the precise amount of lye needed for your soap recipe, ensuring safety and accuracy.
Soap Packaging: If you plan to give or sell your soap, you'll need packaging materials such as labels, shrink wrap, or soap boxes.
Drying Racks: These are used to allow your soap bars to cure and harden properly after they are made.
Ingredients for Special Effects: Depending on your soap design, you might need ingredients like exfoliants (e.g., oatmeal or poppy seeds), swirl tools, or embeds.
Before you start making soap, it's important to research and understand the specific requirements of the soap-making method you plan to use, whether it's melt-and-pour, cold process, or hot process. Additionally, always follow safety guidelines and handle lye with care, as it can be caustic. Properly equipping yourself with the right soap making supplies and knowledge will lead to enjoyable and successful soap crafting.

User questions & answers
Question: | can I add some almond oil or jojoba oil to the melted soap base? If yes, what's the max amount |
Answer: | I have added almond extract (for fragrance), and it works just fine. I use other essential oils too, and they work for me. I don't measure, but a teaspoon for every 2 cups or so should work if you want to add the oil for the fragrance. If you want to add it for some other reason, I would suggest you don't do it because the soap base is just perfect the way it is. |
Question: | How long can I store this soap base? Want to use around Christmas time |
Answer: | I had mine on hand for at least 2 months before I used it. It is such a high quality soap. I really think it would be fine to wait until Christmas, but check with the manufacture if you are really worried. about it. |
Question: | Are your products free of animal testing |
Answer: | The label lists the ingredients on the block of Goat’s Milk soap but it does not indicate anywhere on the label whether it is or is not tested on animals. |
Question: | Why does someone say there is lye in this goats milk soap, when it does not state it under their ingredients |
Answer: | No Lye, No Soap! Sodium Hydroxide (lye) is necessary to make soap. Oils + Water + Lye -> SoapAfter the saponification process, no free lye is left in the soap, it's all gone through the chemical reaction to make become soap. :) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this mold also be used for making candles |
Answer: | Good question. I guess it could be used for candles, the hot wax won’t hurt it, but you would have to rig something for the wick. To be honest, if I were you, I would just buy a candle mold or jars for my candles. Best of luck my friend. |
Question: | Is this made with food grade silicone |
Answer: | NO, this is food soaping only! |
Question: | Has anyone use this mold for commercial use? I have received my order and now I’m worried that it might be too small |
Answer: | I have been using to make soap to sell and I think it's fine. I get about 8 to 9 bars that are 1 inch thick and two and a half pounds of soap give me about an average of 4.2 Oz per bar and I might be pretty sure that the mold can probably hold a little closer to 3 lb but I haven't quite tried that yet so I stick to the more two and a half pounds of soap plus any extra ingredients like fragrance or colorants. |
Question: | How can a rookie beginner learn how to make soap? I have no idea what im doing but I want to learn as soon as possible |
Answer: | Well, first off you might consider watching soapmaking videos on you tube. There are also a few great books on the subject for 10 or 15 bucks each. Then, you will feel more comfortable ordering supplies. Most soaps are easily made by keeping your ingredients list to a minimum. Dont get too crazy at first. Make a few small batches, when you find a recipe that works for you, you can double or triple it later. Also, maybe consider starting with MP (melt and pour). Its a great way to enter the soapmaking world. Before you know it youll be ordering FOs, EO, new molds etc! But be sure its something you really want to get into because you can spend 500 to 1k buying supplies, oils, butters, scale, molds, essential oils, micas, piping bags and tips, pots, pitchers, cutters, bags, books, labels, powders, clays, salts, fragrance oils, stick blender, mixer, containers etc.. The list can get as big as your budget if you let it. Ive seen all kinds of soapers, some use the best, others brag about getting 12 bucks worth of supplies from the dollar store to make a few pounds of soap. Ive been soaping for 6 months now and Ive spent over a grand on the "hobby". I dont sell, I just enjoy making soap as an art form currently. Thank god I have a good day job! I say jump in, you will love having some pretty awesome homemade soaps! Oh yah, if you do try cold processed soap from scratch you will need to build and enter your recipe into soapcalc.net or the likes. Its important to measure your ingredients precisely as they were entered into soapcalc. It determines how much lye and water you will need for said recipe. You may want to do a water reduction for a faster firmer bar that requires less curing time. Anyways, I can continue this forever. Good luck on your soaping journey! |

Answer: | Just pour and it’s all done! However, I do recommend if you’re going to be taking it somewhere else to dry (ie. Traveling from outside to inside), place the mold on a hard portable surface like a book or a plate so it will be more storage while you’re moving it. |
Question: | What are the dimensions of the inner mold |

User questions & answers
Question: | can these be mixed with acrylic pouring medium for creating acrylic pour paint? If so, any idea of ratio |
Answer: | Hi Collette, What size boxes are your looking to fill and will u be placing something in them? |
Question: | Do these come with a micro spoon/scoop for dispensing the product |
Answer: | They are thicker and do not tear easily, but being paper I wouldn't use "sturdy" to define them. I used them as filler for bridesmaid proposal boxes and they looked great, filled the space nicely, and the bag has a ton in it (I used maybe 1/5 of the bag for 7 pencil boxes full). |
Question: | What should i mix it with |
Answer: | Hi Charleen, This 1/2 pound will be more than enough. |
Question: | is this organic |
Answer: | Hello, The crinkle paper goes a long way depending on how tight you pack it into the boxes. To be safe, we would recommend 2 pounds. Below is a link for our 1 LB bag as it is more cost effective: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D3MR3FX?ref=myi_title_dp Please let us know if you have any additional questions as we are happy to help. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are pesticides used in the growing process |
Answer: | Absolutely you can mix our mica powders into any paint medium, including acrylics. Just experiment till your happy with the results :) |
Question: | Are they smokeable |
Answer: | It did not come with any spoon/scoop. We just used small teaspoons to measure. |
Question: | Do these have chemicals sprayed on them like other dried flowers |
Answer: | Mica powder pigments will mix well into virtually any medium, including all kinds of paint, resin, wax, soap, rubber, glues, cosmetics, latex - they are stable, non-toxic, non-melting and color fast. |
Question: | Can you safely use them to make teas |
Answer: | Our mica pigments are made from all natural mineral mica as base raw material. User questions & answers
Question: | How long does it last, untouched, before using it to make soap |
Answer: | After the soap is fully cured and properly wrapped and stored the product can last up to a year before using. |
Question: | Are the ingredients really organic? I just received my shipment and the sticker does not indicate that the ingredients are |
Answer: | Organic Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Safflower Oil, Glycerin, Purified Water, Sodium Hydroxide, Sorbitol. This soap base is made from glycerin that has been extracted from pure oil. The glycerin is distilled and deodorized twice, for a clear bar of soap that can be scented to suit your personal tastes. This clear soap base is also free of surfactants and is alcohol free. Country of Origin: This product is sourced and manufactured in the USA Glycerine Soap Base - Clear, does not contain any of the eight major allergens, which are soy, eggs, peanut, milk, wheat, tree nuts, fish, etc. |
Question: | Is this base good for face and shampoo bars |
Answer: | My husband uses it for everything - it's really great quality. Being female I tend to use more specialized products on face and hair. |
Question: | How long would the produced soap last in optimal conditions under the following circumstances: packaged, unpackaged with no use, after the first use |
Answer: | The melt and pour ready to used soap is great. All I do is test its PH before using it other than that it's ready to use as soon as it sets up and solidifies. My wife love to give it way as gifts so it doesn't last on the shelf very long. I have several different batches already made and I keep them on a baking cooling rack lined with wax paper and I keep them individually wrapped in wax paper. I store them in a cabinet drawer for long storage after they have fully cured. |

SLS/SLES free - Transparent and ultra Clear Glycerin soap base
Melt and Pour Soap Base refers to a soap base that has already undergone the soap-making process so that the user can simply melt it, pour it, customize it and allow it to cool before using the resulting bars. Discover the properties, benefits and all artistic possibilities of various Velona’s Glycerin bases!
Country of origin:
This product is sourced and manufactured in the USA.
Make the unique gift:
Melt and pour layer soaps are perfect for your child’s teacher. This homemade craft is a fun idea as a Christmas, teacher appreciation or anytime gift. Made with your favorite essential oils. All you need to do is melt & pour into different soap layers using premade soap base. Super Simple!!! This layering process gives you a beautiful handmade soap that makes for lovely gifts.
Easy to work with:
Melt and pour soap is a great option for beginners. All you need to do is melt the premade base, customize it with your favorite colors and scents, and pour into a mold. Once you get the hang of the process, you can experiment with advanced techniques like layers and swirls.
Great family time spending:
Melt and pour soap base is a perfect way to spend some interesting time with your kids and family members. The great benefit is that these soap bases are perfectly safe to work with. Discover lots of ideas and make unique soap bars for yourself or as a gift for ones you love!
Beneficial to your skin:
Although Melt and Pour soap incorporates synthetic substances, which may range from foaming agents and alcohol-based emulsifiers to solvents, these chemical elements enable Melt and Pour soap to liquefy in order that it may be formed into the preferred design. Cold process soaps usually contain less Glycerin than Melt and Pour soaps, thus they are more likely to be drying on the skin.
Safe to work with:
The foremost benefit of using Melt and Pour soap bases is that the user does not have to deal with the caustic substance known as Lye, as it has already been incorporated into the soap base in advance. The user-friendly nature of Melt and Pour soap is another benefit of these bases, as this method makes it uncomplicated to quickly achieve professional-quality soap bars with luxurious appearances, scents, and textures, all of which can be customized with a wide variety of artistic possibilities.
Ready to use instantly:
Another key benefit of Melt and Pour soap bases is that, unlike cold-processed soaps, the final product does not require a curing period, that is to say there is no days- or weeks-long stretch of time during which the soap must be left untouched in order for the lye to be neutralized and for the saponification process to be completed; once Melt and Pour soaps have been removed from their molds, they are ready to use immediately. The longer the soap sits, the harder and milder it will become.
