14 best mold makers
Mold makers, in the context of molding and casting, play a crucial role in various creative and industrial processes. They are skilled artisans or professionals who specialize in creating molds used for replicating objects, sculptures, and other items. Here's what you should know about mold makers and their role in molding and casting:
Mold Types: Mold makers work with different types of molds, such as silicone molds, rubber molds, plaster molds, and more. The choice of mold material depends on the specific requirements of the project.
Materials: Mold makers use a variety of materials to create molds, including silicone rubber, latex rubber, alginate, plaster, and even metal for more industrial applications. The choice of material is determined by factors like the object being molded, the desired level of detail, and the number of castings needed.
Sculpture and Art: Mold makers often collaborate with sculptors and artists to reproduce their original sculptures or artworks. They create molds of the original piece, allowing artists to make multiple copies or editions.
Casting Process: Once a mold is created, it is used in the casting process. This involves pouring liquid or molten material (such as resin, concrete, wax, or metal) into the mold to create a replica of the original object.
Customization: Mold makers can customize molds to meet specific project requirements. They may need to add vents, registration keys, or other features to ensure accurate and successful castings.
Replication: Molds are particularly useful for replicating intricate or detailed objects. This is common in industries like toy manufacturing, where molds are used to produce multiple copies of a toy design.
Restoration: Mold makers also play a role in restoring damaged or historical artifacts. They create molds of the original pieces and use these molds to recreate missing or damaged parts.
Industrial Applications: Beyond art and sculpture, mold making is crucial in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing. Precision molds are used to produce complex and accurate parts and components.
Prototyping: In product development, mold makers create prototypes of new products or components. These prototypes can be used for testing and validation before mass production.
Safety and Skill: Mold making requires a high level of skill and precision. Safety measures, such as proper ventilation and the use of protective equipment, are important because some molding materials can be hazardous if mishandled.
Artisanal and Commercial: Mold makers may work as independent artisans serving artists and craftsmen, or they may be employed by commercial manufacturing companies, where they contribute to mass production processes.
In summary, mold makers are skilled professionals who create molds that are integral to various creative and industrial processes. Their work enables the replication of objects, sculptures, and parts with precision and consistency, making mold making a valuable and versatile craft.

Question: | Can this be used to create molds for baking |
Answer: | YES IF YOU USE THE RIGHT KIND OF ITEM TO MAKE THE ITEM IN THE MOLD. |
Question: | Hello do use mold release spray on your items to be molded? Or is this nonstick |
Answer: | Sealed and nonporous surfaces can be molded without any sealant or mold release spray. However, if an item is porous, for example wood, un-glazed ceramic, a seashell or any other natural material, the silicone will get into the pores of the object and create a mechanical bond that will prevent you from un-molding your object. You would want to seal these types of items for successful molding. |

User questions & answers
Question: | how does it work |
Answer: | It's as easy as the instructions on the bottles...mix equal parts of the putty together, just like Play-Doh, and until you see that the two have no more streaks but it is one color. Then simply apply it and press the mixed putty on to your mold. In a matter of a few minutes you have your reusable mold hardened! What I like about this one is that it is food safe, excellent for lolly pops, ice cream, etc. Hope that helps you. |
Question: | If you can use this for food, what is the highest temperature |
Answer: | I have never used it for food but I have made charms with a high heat glue gun and they have survived. The highest I have baked anything in it has been 275 degrees. I don't know if boiled sugar or syrup will be too hot. |
Question: | Does this make a flexible mold like rubber/silicone |
Answer: | Yes it is, I believe it is a silicone. I've made lollipop molds and had no trouble bending them to retrieve the lollipop. |
Question: | is this product reusable |
Answer: | I am not sure exactly what you mean by "reusable" so I am answering this two ways. You can use a mold you make over and over again, I have not had one wear out yet. You cannot create another mold from one that you already made since the product hardens to form the shape you are wanting to duplicate. So once you create a mold it is not changing in my experience. It's a wonderful product and I use it quite often. You won't go wrong. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many ounces is each bottle |
Answer: | It is sold and labeled in Lbs.Part A is 1.2lbs and Part B is 1.6lbs and I can't find any label that provides info regarding ounces. The dimensions are almost the same size as a 16 oz bottle so it's close to 16oz per bottle but that it an estimate. Sorry I can't provide more info. |
Question: | Is it enough liquid to make a 12" vinyl record mold |
Answer: | Probably two orders of this would do that. Depends how thick you want your mold. When making molds always get more than you think you need. If you're pouring the mold and you run out then the mold is incomplete and useless. I don't know where you live but ordering directly from smoothon is usually faster. They have facilities in Texas and Pennsylvania. You can't beat their products. |
Question: | is this heat resistant |
Answer: | Not positive but aren't all silicones heat resistant. Great product. |
Question: | How large of a mold will this usually make? One large one? a few small ones? or is there a specified size reccommended |
Answer: | I molded an object with a volume of 37 ounces but it took a set and 1/4 of another set of these bottles. Safe bet that if you have a model with a displacement greater than the one I did, you need two sets. Some find the simplest way is to pour rice around your model then pour the rice into measuring cups to get a better idea of how much. The hollow mold that I made was about 11.5 inches high and 4 inches in diameter with a width of 1 inch on the sides and bottom of the mold. So.. to encapsulate a volume of 37 ounces with enough material so that the mold was free standing it was a set and 1/4 of silicone at the least. My mold did not have a top though, with a top, it would have been a set and a half, no question about it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these molds be used in an oven? I assume the silicone is not food grade but I'm thinking of using those with oven bake clay |
Answer: | I use my torch on them that is the only heat I've used on my molds. |
Question: | Can this product be used to make wedding bands |
Answer: | I would use Alumilite High strength 3. It's sold here on Amazon. |
Question: | Can I use this to create a mold for concrete |
Answer: | I wouldn't. The material is rather soft when cured. Unless you're only making small items, no. |
Question: | How much would i need to cast a mold of a round item 2.5 inches in diameter and about 3/4 of an inch thick |
Answer: | The best thing I can tell you is this. Place the item in a suitable container that you can make a mold with. Add water to give you the volume you need as if you were making the mold. Pour the water into the same type of measuring container you would use to measure the compound with. Jot down the amount, or mark it on your container. That should give you an approximate amount of mold maker you should use. Always make a small amount extra, just in case. |
- 100% reusable mold making material.
- Used, filtered ComposiMold, Works like new, but it is not food contact safe.
- Works great with Resins like ComposiCast, ComposiMold-Plaster, and more.
- Colors and shapes may vary from photos.
User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be too hot for rubber |
Answer: | Hello, Rubbers that work very well with the ComposiMold include latex, silicone, ComposiMold, and many urethane rubbers. Some urethane rubbers do create quite a bit of heat during curing and can be more challenging. You can chill your mold to handle these higher temperatures. Other rubbers that are thermoplastic (melt) may be too hot. For example, hot glue can work in chilled molds, but I would recommend the ImPRESSive Putty instead as it can handle temperatures up to about 200 F. That is also the case for plasticol (PVC) type rubbers like those used in the fishing lures. ImPReSSive Putty can handle those temperatures a little better than the ComposiMold. Hopefully, that helps, but if I didn't answer about the type of rubber you're using, please send me a link to the rubber you're looking at using and I can give a more specific answer. Thanks! Stan at ComposiMold |
Question: | Can I use liquid latex with a mold made from this or would it adhere to the mold |
Answer: | Yes, liquid latex will work well with ComposiMold. The latex doesn't stick to the ComposiMold, but you can also use a thin coat of vegetable oil or baby oil as a mold release. Wipe the ComposiMold mold with the oil, and then wipe it off to leave a very thin layer of release oil. ComposiMold will also work if you make a latex foam. Thank you! Stan |
Question: | what is the melting point of this ComposiMold? can I cast candle wax(melts@200*400*)carving wax with it? I do lost wax casting for silver casting |
Answer: | ComposiMold melts at about 135 F. You can use it with Beeswax by chilling the mold first, but the lost wax is too hot. We do have the ImPRESSive Putty that can handle up to about 200 F and hotter if you chill the mold first. We have used the ImPRESSive Putty for the carving wax. We also have some videos of using beeswax for the lost wax process. Give us a shout and we can help. thank you! |
Question: | What is the approximate volume (in cubic inches) that 3lbs of Composimold will fill when melted |
Answer: | 3 lbs of ComposiMold is approximately 70 cubic inches which is 39 fluid oz. or 1150ml. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What mold release should i use with this rubber? (the smooth-on universal mold release says to not use it with silicone rubber |
Answer: | Any universal mold release. Usually do not need a mold release with oomoo 25. Longer setting mold rubbers you usually do. Also depends on the item that you are molding |
Question: | It left my resin pieces sticky how do you get them from not being sticky |
Answer: | Could be 1 of 2 things 1. What you casted didn't let your silicone cure correct most 3d printed items do this you'll have to switch to the tin cured silicone not the platinum cured which oomoo 25 is. 2. You didn't mix your resin enough or the correct amounts. |
Question: | can this be used for casting tin, which melts at 450 degrees |
Answer: | NO! You need to use Mold Max 60 |
Question: | Can this be used to mold body parts? Hands, face, feet, etc |
Answer: | I do not believe this is the intended use. It gets pretty warm. There are other products for molding body parts available. Luna Bean -XL- Family Size Keepsake Hands Casting KIT | Clasped Group Hand Holding & Molding Kit (Cast up to 6 Hands) or Alja-Safe Lifecasting Alginate 3-lb Box - Plaster Casting Kit by Smooth-On |

Alumilite Amazing Mold Rubber Kit, 0.77 oz.
- .77 oz kit
- High strength liquid silicone rubber
- Good for complex and multiple piece molds
- Flexible and Demolds in 2-4 hours
User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this to make molds of human body parts like fingers |
Answer: | Because the cure time for silicone is long for body moldings, alginate is a much more common option. Although due to the high water content resisns will not cure in alginate. So unless you don't mind sitting with your finger in it for at least 2 hours without moving, would not recommend. |
Question: | Can this be used to make a flat, thin mold of a textured design using polymer clay as the thing you are molding |
Answer: | Yes but not too thin. Make sure the sides are high enough so when you pour your resin into the mold it doesn't run over the sides. Also, some resins might bend if they are too thin, so be careful unmolding. |
Question: | How many good resin castings will I be able to make from one rubber mold |
Answer: | I manage to make about 25-35 good castings from one rubber mold. After that, you can still cast, but there will be slight imperfections. |
Question: | can you use this to make a mold of polymer clay statue |
Answer: | I wouldn't recommend making a polymer clay statue, unless its something small. This product works best with resin casting. |

Mold Star rubbers are easy to use platinum silicones which are mixed 1A:1B by volume (no weighing scale necessary). Mold Star silicones feature relatively low viscosities and vacuum degassing is not required for most applications. Mold Star silicones cure to soft, strong rubbers which are tear resistant and exhibit very low long term shrinkage. Molds made with Mold Star will last a long time in your mold library and are good for casting wax, gypsum, resins, concrete and other materials. Cured Mold Star rubber is heat resistant up to 450°F (232°C) and is suitable for casting low-temperature melt metal alloys. Note: THI-VEX is NOT compatible with Mold Star rubbers.MIX RATIO: 1:1 by volume; POT LIFE: 50 mins; DEMOLD TIME: 4 hrs; SHORE A: 15; COLOR: Green
- TEAR RESISTANT - Mold Star silicones cure to soft, strong rubbers which are tear resistant and exhibit very low long term shrinkage *Packaging may vary*
- HEAT RESISTANT - Cured Mold Star rubber is heat resistant up to 450°F (232°C) and is suitable for casting low-temperature melt metal alloys
- CURING- Allow Mold Star 15 SLOW silicone rubber to cure for 4 hours at room temperature (73°F/23°C) before demolding.
- VACCUM DEGASSING - Although not necessary, vacuum degassing helps eliminate any entrapped air in pourable silicone rubber
- MOLD PREFORMACE - The physical life of the mold depends on how you use it (materials cast, frequency, etc.). Casting abrasive materials such as concrete can quickly erode mold detail, while casting non-abrasive materials (wax) will not affect mold detail. Before storing, the mold should be cleaned with a soap solution and wiped fully dry. Two part (or more) molds should be assembled. Molds should be stored on a level surface in a cool, dry environment
User questions & answers
Question: | What is the shelf life for parts A and B unmixed |
Answer: | Hey mOWWck, the shelf life is about 1 year (usually slightly longer than that) if you do not use them. This is an approximate number and based on our experiences in keeping the products in our store. You should, however, place the products in a low humidity area to keep them longer. Do note that unused silicone last longer than unused resins before the products start gradually losing their properties (such as hardness etc.) Hope this helps and have a great day ahead!! |
Question: | How well does this retain fine details |
Answer: | It does a great job with details. |
Question: | Is this enough to make a full set of rpg dice molds in small cups |
Answer: | I ran out after 6 of the 7 dice. I used 4 oz cups and was barely able to make the six molds. The molds did turn out great, though! |

Answer: | The waffle measures six and a half inches |
Question: | Was anyone else’s “wiggly” on arrival? The hinge is wiggly |
Answer: | Yes mine is wiggly but it does not affect anything when you make the waffles. Once you put the batter in and put the top down it is fine. I make waffles about 3 times a week for my grandson. I LOVE this waffle iron and it makes the best waffles ever!!!! |
Question: | Is it 110 v or |
Answer: | I was about to respond 110v only, but not wanting to disappoint you, I pulled it out and checked it; 110 V ONLY. |
Question: | Is this truly a traditional waffle maker or the Belgian style |
Answer: | We chose it because it was not Belgian style. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could I push(?) shape it around a delicate item such as a fruit, do you think the moisture from the berry would inhibit the curing process |
Answer: | The silicone “putty” is pretty stiff, so it might deform the berries. But i dont think the moisture inherent in the berries would be a problem. |
Question: | Forget my questions, its says Non-Toxic on the front of the box, but not in the description |
Answer: | Mate, I make ear plugs from this stuff for pistol shooting etc. It is non-toxic. It is very good. I also wrapped some around my stereo ear plugs and they do not fall out anymore. Cheers, Cliff D |
Question: | Will this hold melted lead |
Answer: | No, the max temperature on this, as stated by the manufacturer, is 400°F. Lead melts at 621°F. |
Question: | Can I mold one of those portrait cookie cutters with this |
Answer: | I’m not sure what a portrait cookie cutter is, but this compound does not stick to anything, making it super easy to make molds! I used it over the summer to mold clam shells and it picked up every fine detail without sticking to the shells at all. Highly recommended. |

Note: THI-VEX is NOT compatible with Mold Star rubbers.
User questions & answers
Question: | is this a flexible mold, meaning can I make reusable molds with it |
Answer: | This will be used to make on form mold that can be used to cast several duplicates of the same pieces. Very flexible and durable. The details in your subject will determine how many times you can reuse it. I used a 2 piece mold and was able to cast 40 pieces from the same mold. |
Question: | Can i make a silicone foot glove with this product |
Answer: | This material is not designed for lifecasting. It is best used in a pour on mold application of an inanimate model. Body Double silicone is rated for skin contact. |
Question: | I ran out this, if i add another batch of mix will it stick together and make one solid mold? or will it seperate |
Answer: | It will stick together unless you use a release agent. I accidently forgot the release agent when making my 2 half mold and had to cut my model out and start over. |
Question: | Can I use Epoxy Resin in this mold |
Answer: | Yes. It works perfect, and picks up the slightest detail from the original piece the mold is made from. |
